View Full Version : Sketching a Song

Hey guys,
I had an idea while listening to Radiohead that I thought I could share here in the sketches board-
Music is a great source of inspiration for drawing, as I know most of you would agree. There have been a number of lists of favourite bands/ songs etc in the past. My idea was to start a thread where anyone can join in and post a sketch inspired by a song.
So you take a single song and based on that song you do a sketch. It doesn't have to be a visual representation of the lyrics or title or whatever but anything inspired by the song...
I don't have time to do one now since I've got to leave for work in 3 minutes but I'll have a go later.
What do y'all reckon?

It's a good idea you should post examples of what you mean though otherwise people won't take the time to read your thread.

Another guy had the same idea but it really didn't work out. Though, I'll try to draw something and post it. If my mom has her digital camera at home, then I'll steal it for a bit and take some pictures. If I can't, I'll do a digital callage (sp?) and post that.

you might find it better if you included other media (films, TV, games etc.) no fanart though.

I'm just about to start my second attempt at doing some sketches based on songs.
young paddy- I don't quite get what you mean by doing stuff based on film or TV. I understand the games one but film and TV shows are already very visually defined by what they are...maybe I'm just not creative enough but it would be difficult to do a piece on, say Fight Club the film without taking straight from scenes in the film wouldn't it?
books on the other hand would obviously be a great source of inspiration.
Anyway I'm going to have another go- my first attempt was rushed and not great- let's see how we go this time.

When i read the title of the thread i thought you meant the visual representation of a song. Ie prehaps like a heart beat monitor kind of "image(??)" running along in time with the music and differnt strokes, patterns, colours connecting to words, beats, vibes etc etc..
But you didnt mean that

nah i didn't mean that but it's an interesting idea as well.

Hey all...finally got a couple of sketches done- I really haven't spent enough time drawing lately, not even on these ones.
I did these while listening to Deftone's White Pony, failing to capture any of the mood of any of the songs.
This was an overall impression of the album:

This was based on the opening track 'feiticeira' but also seems suitable to 'passenger'.

My feelings on them (and the rest of the sketches I did for this) are that they're too literal, too contrived and I didn't allow myself enough time or freedom to be really influenced by the music.
georgem- Id like to see an example of your idea- are you thinking of an abstract result?

I cant comment on your pictures becuase i havnt heard any Deftones.
If i did my idea i was aiming for a completely abstract result, specaily if i use AFX for my music. ill get a picture done and post it with a link to the music aswell.

I know that you are thinking abstract on this but I wasnt gonna post this quicky on a whole post and since the idea came from a song I thought, Why not? So this was inspired by one of the songs on the blink 182 album "Like spiders, catching him and eating their insides" Again this was quick maybe 25 min overall. But c&c always appeciative.

cool spidey!
that's exactly the kind of thing I was thinking when I had the original idea- it doesn't have to be abstract, nor does it have to be literal, just anything inspired by a song.
Anarchy- I was planning to work up to a radiohead song, or a Mars Volta song...but anyone else is free to have a go too
Another idea I had to make a bit more social is for someone to choose a song and then have two or more people do something based on the same song- see what comes up- how does that sound?
