- Any time period or setting is allowed.
- Can be male or female! :punkgirl:

Been away for a while due to a family trip followed by a bad case of strep throat, wish I could have participated in Aladdin, but oh well :(
These are not the final lines; although I am very tempted to just start painting over this and fix all the mistakes at the painting stage.

This sounds like fun!
This is the first concept I've come up with. I wanted to show the Veteran in a difficult scenario, such as an "uphill battle."
Got some rough scribbles showing some battle going on in the background, but I'm undecided on whether I want her to be holding an enemy soldier there... I'm fearful that he'll share the spotlight, being right there with her. Perhaps she could be holding a banner instead, or pose the soldier a bit differently?

this is Innya a veteran hitwoman(ironicaly enough this means "the innocent" in russian). a russian mob doll who had to learn a whole new set of tricks to survive in the harsh enviroment she grew up with. she can kill you with 30 different ways before you even know she is there but she is not averse to using brute force either. people who underestimate her sadly dont get a chance to learn from their mistakes...ever again!
when she is in a killing mode she wears a spiked colar on her neck (kind of like a reverse danny the dog). the scars on her right arm are not the number of people she has killed but rather the number of times she has eluded death herself. "any second rate thug can kill a person, its the fact that you can stay alive when others try to kill you that makes you dangerous" is her favorite line.

well...
1rst because its pretty,
2nd its distracting to guys so its one more weapon to use against them.
anyway i am a woman, and female nudity doesnt bother me at all in works of art (goes without saying that male nudity doesnt bother me at all either....anywhere :P)

Sorry for maybe looking too far into the requirements..
But, it says 'he has seen many battles' or something along that lines.
Does that mean he has to be some courageous, muscular brute, or can he just be some man who has just witnessed them, without actual involvement. Much like some kings who just sent their troops into battle, then escaped when the fight started :P
I'll try and join in, i may have to just draw something and not actually scan in because i've got a busy week.
Really enjoy these CHOW's though, makes you do draw various things.

It just means he or she has a lot of experience in battle and conflict. This has to show somehow, so if you want to, the character could be more of a leader figure. Only, he propably is not the kind of guy who got that leadership status by studying at the academy, but by fighting countless of battles.
Again, how you interpret the brief is up to you in this one. The only requirement is that he has to show experience. This guy knows battle inside out..

Being away from this forum for too long, this is a warm up sketch
the main idea of this veteran is scars, so I show more flesh of him to show that the scars is his 'badge' / proof that he have going through so many battles, and also I made him lost his left hand and left eye, to show that he survived from the worst and it doesn't stop him to keep on fighting.

The Veteran
They say he's laid waste to every major Planeswalker out there. His pain threshold is legendary. He has a papercut scar for every Pro Tour he's entered. Some say he's never lost a game.. ever. If Chuck Norris played Magic: the Gathering, he wouldn't know what hit him. This guy's Library is loaded. And he has a wolf pack shirt.

pixelfuture-- his head is way too small for his body, and the arms are too long. His shield seems small as well; remember, it's got to protect most of his torso while he's wielding it.
__
Changing it up yet again. Backstory-wise, I think she was a member of a conquered nation whose able-bodied members were brought back to the invading kingdom as slaves. She learned to fight through surreptitious lessons in her people's native defense arts, and by watching her master's sons in their training sessions and practicing on her own. When the city was invaded she proved a competent if inelegant fighter, and her master was so impressed that he used his clout to get her formal military training. She fought for the city long enough to earn a name for herself across the known world, then she deserted mid-campaign to become a mercenary. No longer constrained by her master's rules, she honors her heritage with a mix of native warrior garb and more conventional armor.
Whew! That was long.

Thank you - I think today is my last chance to get an oil dry by sunday if i put it on the Aga (if you don't know what that is - no idea if you have them in the states! its a cooker/oven which is always on and giving out heat).
SO, it means i can have a bash at this CHOW if i can do it tomorrow and friday and possibly saturday between printing flyers etc for the show. Its lots of local artists exhibiting in a big garden which will be fun - so hoping it doesn't rain!! (likely though since it is england!).
dwinbotp - really like your design - I actually liked the original arm attachment idea (I loved being able to see the light inside the attaching arm), and i really love the fact that this guy has a strong gut rather than yet more ripped abs!! You only have to look at REAL strongmen to see that they don't all have cut bodies. There is a famous prisoner here in the UK called Charles Bronson - he's been in solitary confinement for nearly 30 years (actually, it may be more than that), and he holds many strength records. Press up records and the like. One of his feats of strength was throwing a refrigerator UP a flight of stairs!! He's not dissimilarly built to your chap here! All that achieved on a disgusting prison diet and a tiny cell! He has written an amazing book (which i have), which is about solitary fitness and the fact gym's are pointless, as are steroids and those bulking protein shakes too. He's proof that he's right!

Here's my veteran: I went for a steampunk style. The title says
Hilda "Firemane", veteran of the steam wars
I put that in spanish to create an unfamiliar and old school feeling. The character, Hilda, was sort of a markswoman and a sky captain. She left her eye in combat, which helped her aiming better with her weapon.

Wrinkles, it's all about wrinkles and dots and hair and...
It's like always, if you dont know how to, than research is the keyword.
Comics, manga and caricature can also help to find the essence of an old face.

Yore right there. The young ones might look cool but dont mix up talented newcomer with talented through age. They may both be elite but only one is a veteran. ;)
For the Topic, I'm also thinking of stretching the guidelines a bit.
We know love is war, so why not take an old but nice lady with a ton of gentlemen photos in her bakground ?...maneater
Or the other way around with a "seanconnerylike" man and a dozen of women photos.

Hey psychosako, I really like your image and since you said that crits are welcome, I decided to see if I could improve the posing a bit. I like the torsion you did in the hips but you should also do the same thing with the shoulder and not have them be parallel to the ground.
Making her look up can also make her feel a bit more strong. In general, it's good to look for angles in posing, it's generally more natural, especially for a woman.
Finally, I would frame the image a bit below the knee, it's good to avoid cuting characters on joints.
But that's all, those are just small details, the overall image was already awesome.

maxrlx:: this is a great idea!
the head is a bit big for the body in comparison to the hands.
I would try to move the arms more out in space.
he looks like he is pressed against the wall and passive or almost surprised no one is giving him money
If you want him to look like he is begging, his arms would be out stretched to the passer by's, or in our case, the viewer.
sorry if the crit was a bit rash, but i hope this helps a little. it is still a great idea and i think you can make that much better by incorporating the perspective, and maybe a robo dog for added story. :rocker:

Decided to restart. Here's the first hour's work which is still super-rough. Using shark shapes again, since it's rarely used in armour and gets the feeling of deadliness and swiftness across. Adding some battle scarring which is reminiscent of shark-bite wounds also. Really trying to show his age and experience but that he's kept in shape. Also, he's someone who isn't just muscle - he's lean and values swift, maneuverable agression over brute force (e.g. no plates on his arms, dual wielding 1handed light weapons, no helm blocking his view or limiting his neck movement).
Some nice entries so far - really need some sleep but will get some C&Cs out tomorrow night. Any feedback appreciated - cheers

Changed the design yet again. I didn't like the proportions of the first version, and the silhouette on the second was too dumpy, but I'm pretty happy with the feel of this one.

@Grump:
Try to look for a more dramatic or dynamic angle or pose.
Just standing there, holding the head up is a bit too simple, in my opinion.
@Weirdiswonderful:
You should pay more attention to your proportions.
Check out www.posemaniacs.com, it helped me a lot.

I like the dark atmosphere and the design, but be careful or he will look like Solid Snake.

I've started this over four times now, I think I'm going to have to go with this one or I'm not going to have time to finish.
The green blob that is the background probably isn't permanent, it's just a placeholder at the moment. And those will eventually be feathers on his head rather than the fern leaves they're looking like right now...
Facial scars ahoy! lol :painting:

Looking through and loving a lot of what I see so far.
@Silentkitty: Jaguar warrior? Love it, love the idea. Anyone who uses a square sword is alright with me.
@Lianti: Like the juxtaposition of the delicate-looking robotic arm, but even with the thin-arm concept, I think the fingers are a bit too tiny? The carbine weapon looks a bit too small as well, though that may be by design. Overall the painting already has a great feel to it. Even without being overly weathered, the face already looks grizzled and experienced.
Can't comment on others at the moment, though crits are certainly welcome on mine.

Crits ahoy - feel free to ignore:
pinpointte: Lots of motion and an interesting piece, but there's nothing in there yet which says "veteran". Can definitely see the Frazetta influence though.
prepsage: Does exactly what it says on the tin, plus some storytelling in the background. I like it.
Sentinel: Nice design and style but if you gave it to a client based on the brief they'd probably not pay up :)
Crysse: Good drawing - just a couple of things though. Firstly, the shadow/mark over his eyes is a tad confusing - is this a shadow or a tattoo or..? It doesn't seem to wrap around the head. Also, as a design it's leaving a lot to the imagination. I really like the amount of expression in the face though.
Undefeated: Good so far - looking forward to seeing it a little further on.
silentkitty: Refreshing take on the design, and facial scars are definitely in this season.
Grump: I do like the pose, but it's saying more "gladiator" to me than "veteran". He's not pushing on for the next kill, more savouring the single kill he's made already. I guess this could still work, as a veteran gladiator maybe, but you'd have to be sure to include some other elements to reinforce his veterean status/age/experience.
Weird.Is.Wonderful: Your lighting is looking flat in a lot of areas, as your light source seems to be a bit inconsistant. For example, if you look at the bottom of his cloak - this is in shadow, but other parts of his cloak which are at the same angle are well lit. I'd recommend drawing an arrow on a separate layer to show which direction your main light source is coming from since it's sometimes easy to get lost with it. Some nice design elements in there though - especially the eyepatch and mech arm.
vertebra: Looking good so far, but be careful not to make it too generic. The space marine route is a slippery slope!
Lianti: Beautiful rendering, pose and expression. One thing though is that the artificial arm, to me at least, doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the design. It looks somewhat out of place, like a nazi zombie being painted into a Monet. Apart from that, it's spot on though. Really looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
~baxter: Deathdwarves - is there anything finer? Looking great, but have to moan about his axe being misaligned - it looks like it's coming towards the viewer; being held like a gun.
psychosako: Snipers ftw. Couple of points - firstly that she doesn't have any signs of being a veteran. Maybe you could reintroduce the medals from the previous wip, put more lines into her face, or give her a little more "sag" or body fat elsewhere. Secondly, the pose is looking a little awkward to me, especially that hand on her hip - you could turn that so it's resting with the fingers pointing diagonally down towards her opposing leg (would help the composition flow also). I'd also imagine that she'd be leaning away from her rifle to counter-balance the weight of it.
Sorry to anyone I've missed, it's getting late. Keep up the good work.
I started yet another version and did a quick render. Not sure which version to go for...

I also had the idea of carving her kill count into the pauldron, but upon failing miserably, i decided to etch it into her rifle instead. It's inspiring to see it done right. I also just noticed vast flaws in my cool lighting. You know, it's good to wait 48 hours before considering something done. >.<
I had intended to add a bit of sleeplessness to her, and apparently forgot. However, your comments on the weight shifting is dead on, and now bugs me greatly. I would need to start from scratch... which i actually might do since i've got another, what, 2 or 3 days? Thanks so much for the crit!
@Prepsage: I love the hell out of the killcount tattoo. Maybe make the ink blue to show he's been doing this a long time?

Really digging a lot of the entries! Time to squeeze in some crits/comments/replies etc.
Weird.Is.Wonderful: yes its chainmail :D
Veshkau: Thanks! I've always been fond of dwarves and like to throw them into the mix once and a while. I actually decided on switching over to a mace since the axe was giving me a bit of trouble. I'm digging your pieces a lot. If I had to choose between the two Id go with the new one. :D
Prepsage: I personally like the markings. They do tell a bit of a story without it being too in your face.
SalvadorTrakal: Loving the armor design!
bluki: Watch the angle on the weapon. It's very vertical and needs to be tilted back a bit.
Monsieur: Perhaps some sort of bludgeoning weapon. When I think heavy duty, I think of beating someone across the head with a large blunt object :P
CrookedHorn: I'd have to agree on no cherry blossoms. It's just done too much.
Here's another wip from me. Slowly working in the detail. Still debating on war trophies. Trying to hold off on bones/skulls, dont want to "over-skull" this guy. Thinking about a helmet or possibly a collection of beard braids from other dwarves. :d

Shaderkul: Like the concept, maybe shift the holomap jobbie so that its in front of instead of beside him? His expression looks a bit bored.
Sketchibo: Nice work so far, as you go along the the breastplate seems to need a bit more rendering to give it a more 3D form.
Mitze: Nice form, I think it would be more effective in the gun in his left hand was pointed a bit more towards the viewer. Love the rendering of the rocks and mountains, would appreciate your advice on how to get that effect.
Ronchibus: Got a kick out of your take on it. Nice concept.
El Khan: Like the design, think it would have more impact with his feet spread a bit more dramatically.

Undefeated: Looking forward to seeing the fully inked version. Really liking the comic book style and line hierarchy.
skechibo: Nice armour design. One thing though is that her right leg / viewer left doesn't look properly grounded considering how her weight is being distributed. Moving the foot further to the viewer left would maybe make her look a bit more balanced/grounded.
Mitze: I'm not sure if this is intentional or not, but the section of his armour beneath his neck is at an odd angle; almost as though it's moving with his head (but the material looks solid - ceramite or something?). To correct it I guess you could just raise it slightly on the viewer right side. Really nice piece though - I hope you get it finished.
Shockowaffel: Original take on the subject, although I'm note sure if a client would be happy with it :)
Shaderkul: Nice atmostphere and background elements. I want a chair like that please.
PxelSlayer: Top-notch character design, just not sure how well it fits with the topic. Fair enough that the topic wasn't really doing much for you, but working out of your comfort zone is pretty valuable practice imo. Great design all the same though.
CrookedHorn: Design, anatomy, facial expression, comp, colours, all bang on. Keep it up!
TheDirtSyndicate: Looking good - very nice style. Interesting choice of software and use of photo cuts too - keep up the good work.
Noah7: There's some tasty reflections going on in that sword. Would say though that his head is looking really awkward. Maybe moving it upwards and pushing it back slightly could correct the problem, so you could see a little of his neck. Also, would like to see more scarring/signs of a life of battle. There's plenty of open wounds there from just the one day, so imagine how many scars there would be from all the wounds which have healed up.
dwinbotp: Really nicely rendered piece, and loving the pose. Couple of little niggles - his legs are still looking a bit flat (apologies if you're not done on the rendering yet) and the 2-handed axe doesn't make much sense to me being dual-wielded with a sword. Maybe shortening the handle down to cut it to a 1-hander could be an option. Would be a shame tho - it's very pretty as is!
El_Khan: Nice work. One thing I would like to see though is more force in the pose - it's looking a little stiff/straight up and down in places.
Keep working hard all!
Here's my sketchy alternate version..

@Alex Boy how taht you not to go foward with that D:!!
@Mitze hnm ,the way his spine is bending looks kinda ...err unmanly , i don't know
going nicely everyone else
@vatteh the inferior leg part looks kinda wai too long, and also his torso looks to short, or hes stretshing his shoulder in a really awkward way so his right arm reach his leg like that
@shockowaffel lol!!
i hope i'm able to finish it till tomorrow ...tips anyone?

@Holymane:
Keep enough space in each direction, otherwise it will be really tight.
My piece again.
I started to dislike it halfway and than liked it again and now I'm somwhere between...I'm not satisfied with it but I dont hate it either.
Crits plz.

I kind rushed my design thinking it had to be in by the 3rd, So I decided to add a little more to the character. Now I cant decide if I prefer the old or new one.
Any suggestions?

@shockowaffel hnm lets see her hands looks off, mainly the left one, it jsut seems not to be holding on her hips nicely, and her eyes...you drew then as if her head was lineing up with the camera, i mean, the shape of the eyes change depending of the angle ,and that comtriutes a lot to make a head looks right

Ah, I see.
Ok, I tried to improve the face as much as possible without redrawing everything.
The hand is out of fous so just fine for now ^^
Main thing to change was the contrast, I think.
With the clothes much darker, it looks more interesting.

Just finished cranking this out, though I doubt I'll submit it to final burning. That's what I get for procrastinating.

TheDirtSyndicate-- This may help: http://www.csgnetwork.com/timezncvt.html
It uses 24 hour clock time, which is kind of a pain in the ass for quick conversion. The one automatic GMT-converter I found online doesn't work, and most other converters use countries rather than time zones, which requires finding out which countries correspond to the desired GMT range and is, once again, a pain in the ass.
I'm on EST, and the cutoff usually falls somewhere between 3-4:00 pm for me, so in your case I'd submit your entry by 1:00 pm.
EDIT: The internet tells me that you're 7 hours behind UTC-- which is apparently equal to GMT+0 --so you'd be eight hours behind GMT+1. Just subtract eight from whatever the deadline is and you're good to go.
