ROUND #211:: Aladdin
DESCRIPTION
Aladdin
The story of Aladdin is one of the most famous tales of the Book of One Thousand and One Nights. The Middle-Eastern folktale tells about the young and poor Aladdin who is hired by a sorcerer to retrieve a magic oil lamp. Aladdin finds out the lamp contains a powerful djinni, who helps him to become rich and wealthy. Aladdin then marries the beautiful princess Badroulbadour.
Design Aladdin!
- You may pick any part of the story to base your character design on, from the poor thief to the wealthy emperor.
- You are free to place Aladdin in any time period you'd like, but stick to the general story.
- Focus on character design, not the illustration! Make Aladdin a real and interesting character!
Good Luck!

I sketched these two dudes and then I've read that we had to do an "original" Aladdin. So I finished the one I'm submitting and then it hit me: word "original" has different meaning, it could be also mean something "new, fresh and inventing". Gah! I'm confused, so I'm showing the other sketches I did on this topic.

K, what do we have here -a street look for Aladdin in different genres/periods (a classical story fitting one, then steampunk inspired (although it could be take up a notch, ya`know), a modern version (something of a gang member kid living on the streets, using his brains more than "guns" to survive), and a gender-bender (b/c I just couldn`t live with myself if I didn`t turn him into a girl. Princess Balabad...Balbod...Blabar...whatever would be in for a serious surprise, that much is sure -_-)
WIP (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=2843946&postcount=7) it good.

Geez,
I forgot to post my final on this thread and missed the voting. I was going to do it right now but I guess it's too little too late. Had fun with it anyways. See you all next week.

Here are the ones I voted for, and some critiques. I must beforehand apologize if Iīm too harsh. I wish only to help out.
Alex-Boy: Nice drawing! Good expression. Very skillful. In my opinion, the rendering isnīt as well executed as the drawing. Even as a comic book sort of rendering, it feels kind cheap to me. Give the rendering som love ;). Also I think overall Iīm feeling that itīs a little too red/magenta.
Fast-Art: Very funny! Love the design on the genie! I think in the rendering you would benefit from not using as much black. I think overall youīve got some very quick/harsh valuejumps, which makes the image a bit busy to look at. And the sharp rimlight on his jaw really makes it look like a razor sharp edge, like that of a sword. I think you could simplify the hair as well, as all those strands are making it too detailed in my opinon.
Furthermore, I think Aladdins expression is a bit unclear. I donīt quite get if heīs mad or surprised. In addition, all the edges look so hard, and I think you could create better focus, and imply materials by softening some of them. But I think the blackness is the biggest problem.
Arthemis IX: Nicely done, great mood and atmosphere! In this realistical style the anatomical flaws are what strikes me the most. The eyes and ears look a bit off, He doesnīt seen to have a collarbone, and seemingly heīs got only one big pectoralismuscle. I think his front leg looks too long. Furthermore, I think the image looks a bit "muddy", and it would benefit from more focus where you want the viewer to look. Also, I personally think thereīs too much detail overall, which makes the design too busy. I think the handle of the lamp obscures the cast shadow on the torso so it creates the illusion that he was wearing a tunic. Finally, I think you would benefit hugely from studying how cloth works with folds and such. I like the rendering of the lamp! =D
Pxel Slayer: Looking sweet! I like the simplicity of the design. Fun expression! I would have loved to see you take the rendering further :) I think you could make the hands a bit bigger. In my opinion, in you folds, you are using too many small and insignificant ones, whereas you could be using fewer which tell more, and that would let the design breathe more. His shapes are rather straight up and static, and I think you could have used more flow and exaggerated angles to suggest his mobility (if mobile is what you strive for him to be). IMO, the image would have had more punch if you had used more temperature changes (cold shadows warm highlights etc.) and local temperatures like warms and cools on his face.
Lianti: Looking real solid. I love your material rendition. I think you could have worked more on the flying mat, I can hardly tell whether itīs a piece of cloth or a massive piece of snow/ice. You could bring in some more atmospheric perspective to create better depth. In my opinion, the story is unclear. I donīt get whatīs going on, and the characters feel posed like statues. Very straight up and down and static. A better gestural flow, and more clear purpose to what the characters are doing would help immensely. Why is he holding his hand on her head? I think the earring looks sloppily rendered by comparison to the rest, and since thereīs a fair amount of contrast there I want to look at it. I believe the image would have been better if you would have eighter decreased the contrast around that area, or rendered the earring slightly more. Finally, I donīthink the little monkey works. Itīs done so quickly and really doesnīt compare at all to the great rendition of the rest of the image. It really ruins the overall quality feeling of the image for me. So eighter leave it out or make it prettier.
Hope that may have helped a little bit :)
Take care!
Kind Regards
/Johannes.

Kaktuzlimes Aladdin looks best in my opinion, although it would be an even better Alibaba or Sindbad, or maybe it's just Disney ringing through my head.
btw, shouldnt he hold his sword in the opposite hand to his Sword holder thing ? (I have no idea what the english word is)
