Fallen Archangel Samael



There are many interpretations of the character Samael, being an angel of both good and evil. Most stories portray his evil side though: the accuser, seducer and destroyer and the fallen angel... Some even compare him to Satan. This week you are to design Samael as a fallen angel, an angel gone very, very bad..

Breaking out of the angel stereotype a little bit here. They don't have to be recognizably human right?

Turns out this Samael guy was absolutely enormous, and covered head to toe in eyes according to one account. From Wikipedia:

According to "The Ascension of Moses" (Chapter IV - Aggadah - The Legend of The Jews - By Louis Ginzberg) Samael is also mentioned as being in 7th Heaven:

"In the last heaven Moses saw two angels, each five hundred parasangs in height, forged out of chains of black fire and red fire, the angels Af, "Anger," and Hemah, "Wrath," whom God created at the beginning of the world, to execute His will. Moses was disquieted when he looked upon them, but Metatron embraced him, and said, "Moses, Moses, thou favorite of God, fear not, and be not terrified," and Moses became calm. There was another angel in the seventh heaven, different in appearance from all the others, and of frightful mien. His height was so great, it would have taken five hundred years to cover a distance equal to it, and from the crown of his head to the soles of his feet he was studded with glaring eyes, at the sight of which the beholder fell prostrate in awe. I thought this was interesting too, fits with the whole taker of souls bit:

Just small ideas, but maybe the head is a little small, and something about where his right shoulder attach to his chest looks a little bit improvable.. Not sure how, perhaps it should poke out a bit more. I love the hands and the angle of the hips! Well I'm not as good as you at anatomy, so might be lame suggestions there..:)

Right-o. So after toying around with a few different ideas, I decided to go with the "angel of death" idea of Samael, only in this case, he's in charge of shepherding the damned to hell. Despite (or, knowing his new master, because of) his current position, he still bears the crown he wore as leader of the fifth layer of heaven, only now it's tarnished and warped, stripped of all its former glory.

I remember why I stopped thumbnailing compositions. I'm terrible at it.

I am absolutely certain I wont be able to fully finish an entry due to an arm injury, but I can't resist doing some of the lighter work, at least!

I tried to marry kind of classical good looks with something a little unnerving and strained, particularly in the face. I'm also trying to draw inspiration from ravens/bird anatomy. I don't know how well this comes across in this initial sketch, but thats where I would want to /go/ with it, anyway, if I could at the moment, haha.

minor update and introduction. :P a david bowie look for my samael. i thought i d make one of the slaves a man but i thought the guys in here would freak out :P
anyway this guy is all about freaky, perverse, lust, he spreads it around like a virus. he is surrounded by his first disciples each one embodies a different aspect of seduction. his raven wings will be visible only on the walls behind him sort of like shadows but not realy depending on the light sourse.

cools! ming, anatomy seems pretty good, maybe the base his shoulder should be a little lower down. And perhaps make his arms a bit longer. The power of the pose is somewhat lost in the arms, you could try and bring the arms back a little more and maybe even have the right arm from our view strait. just some thoughts...:)

Gunnarsson: Your night lighting is just fantastic. I dig the compressed legs due to the high eye level trick too. I checked out your sb, some super nice stuff towards the end. Looking forward to seeing your chow progressing.

Watch out that the house at the top left of the frame doesn't get too distracting though. Samael isn't really looking at it, and it doesn't bounce the eye back to him either, it just saps energy and takes the viewers eye out of the piece. My feeling is that if there was some indication of the house right in front of him, maybe a busted up mailbox, and some light bouncing off of rocks and trees coming from the left off screen, this would create a really nice feeling of mystery, some good story to draw the viewer in.

Teeny Update

Fixed the arms for the most part - the shoulders are still irritating me. I've flipped the image twice, doodled on it in paint and all other sorts of things. The neck is a lil' wonky still. I need to adjust some things on the face a lil' bit that's throwing it off in the mirror image.

I decided to go with a theme that I've already done for another angel, Azrael, for the clothing. Shush about the candle I'm not done with placements of the hands and fingers yet (obviously by the craptastic fingers and box hands) so I haven't flesh the candle out. :D

For the wings, I'm using vulture wing references - just in case anyone was curious as to why it looks kinda like a chicken with sticks popping out. Lol.

Some quick lines, hope I can finish this one. Love what everyone has so far, kinda took everything I read and mixed it together for my design plus some alien proportions to make him look creepy.

May tweak the design a bit (it's not 100% what I want), or I might run with it as-is, though any and all critique is always welcome. I really wanted to go with cobra hood imagery (for the eyes, venom, and 'wings'), but I think I could have pushed it more.

Here's something I did in 2 and 3/4ths of an hour. I guess I'm happy enough with my early concepts for Samael, so I decided to draw him with a slight pose with a hellish environ in the backgroud. I'm not that good at drawing rocks and cliff faces, so any critiques would be wunderbar =)

UCT Thanks! Yes, I do use photo textures in my paintings and occasionally I use textured brushes. I do post progress shots of all my Chows when I post my final. I don't use Illustrator, all my paintings are 100% Photoshop. Hope that helps.

wiggers - looking good there, ace sword (I now understand the blue highlighting that confused me a bit earlier) needs a background to frame character.

ming - i think you need to add tonal values, it goes from bright to dark pritty quickly, and with the colours, hard lights and shadows, theres not much harmony. Nice colours tho, so far as the feet go, good effort really.

aargh - I think you need to pin down some of that energy in your pose. Pick a focal point and work out from that, I dont know if you are going to use dynamic brush strokes as your wip suggests but they need to complement the gesture. Nice start.

OK I fixed a bit chest's anatomy and polished the background
I tried to balance lightning adding a smoother transitio between shadows and light areas(Thx UCT)
I think it's almost done,but I need to forget it for a while and see what happens next time I'll look at it

Trying this out for the first time. I went for the Samael at a low point, after his wings are ripped off. But at least he's nuts and smiling about it.

Didn't like the ideas from last night, so I wanted to mix things up a bit more. I think I will probably go with the last design here. A friend of mine suggested messed up legs made of eyes so he would have to drag himself around like a snake, and I liked the idea enough to give it a go.

My initial layout for Samael. In the rendering phase I want to express the contrast between his light and dark sides. Where the divine light hits him (back) he is still beautiful but in the dark shadows he becomes death.

Done on my iPad with my blood pencil (finger) lol.

i decided to take it to a new direction. this one a bit more conceptart-ish... i think! i ll have him casually striding out of one of the portals to hell. he doesnt have his wings anymore so in mockery he wears a cloak that looks like wings. i couldnt resist the eyes either but i only gave him one (instead of a belly button which he doesnt have for obvious reasons).

Hi all! Been a while... having an artistic low so its always helpful popping on Conceptart for a little pick me up. :D

So I was pondering this Samael character... reading all the different takes on him... fallen one, red dragon, Angel of Death, etc. and I like the idea of him being in "transition". Changing from an angel to a demon as he sucks up the souls of the damned. Hes really getting into his new job... :D

I've been having real problems coloring this one, I think it's the lack of appropriate ambient lighting on the character (and some anatomy problems, my bad for not finding good reference material first). Anywho, bit more refinement, I'm hoping to fix those mistakes (best I can) and finish up tomorrow.
