I am no where near where I wanted to be with this one, but I post it anyway. I tried to stick to her facial features from her actual portrait, but made her younger.

Almost cuts: LA-Fairy and Xaya. With the 3/4th rule, you are in a grey area. However, since the dress makes makes the knee area kind difficult to see I let you pass.

Oh please let me get in the poll! As I'm posting it's GMT 12.30, and I've been working on this all day! If not I guess I'll have to try next week. : (

Anyway, this is my Marie Antoinette, eating cake. The wallpaper in the background I also designed the tiling pattern for, and it features a cupcake, knife and fork. Enjoy!

Beautiful works everyone!! I voted for Arisun - I LOVE the style of your linework, it's really beautiful and classy, Openanewworld - the costume you've got Marie in is just gorgeous, Janjager - AMAZING! And a clever idea :)

Wish I'd gotten mine in, such a shame it was such a busy week!!

openanewworld great design though i think a bit more details would make it a sure winner.

artina you have a really nice start but i think you should've spend more time in designing her dress and the background.

alotabitalittle nice concept, i think that you could use some harder shadows to define the shapes and make the image to pop out a bit more.
there are some perspective problems with the bottle and the table and the rest of the room.

juliamango you have a really nice drawing, maybe try to use some references for the pose and the face.
maybe you should try to play a bit with some light sources and focus at first only on one or two light sources in your pictures.

rodriguez you made a really cool dress design, but there are some parts that feel unfinished to me, like her hands and the back ground.
the colors seem a bit blurry to me and almost without any shadows- try to pick a single light source and work with it.

Shogo Great concept, it has so much potential as a full painting as well.
I think you could've spend more time on rendering those hands and the back ground thought.

senira Cute+ cartoony + funny =great.
i really like your style, thought i usually not in to this kind of stuff.
i think that if you could've made some sort of a background to each of them- it would have made it much better.

ain't got a lot of time so i"ll post the rest of the crits a bit later.

Alex.

I'm bummed I missed this one - a chance to do historical costume is always fun.

Some notes on the dress at this period, though they're a little late - right at the seeds of the French Revolution, it's an era of extreme excess and opulence. Impracticality in mode of dress means you are too rich or too important to move; dresses become extremely wide at the sides with the use of paniers or "side cans," which give an exaggerated boxy hip silhouette, and not in the rear/butt area as some people have interpreted it (Prepsage for one, though I think the drawing and painting is very cute). It's an exaggeration which leads to extremely wide double doors in palaces, and chairs with no arms to allow for ladies to sit (or rather, "lean") on them....yes, fashion can dictate changes in architecture and decor!

As mentioned earlier, a couple of people fell into the trap of thinking that the silhouette in the 1780's is a big, round bell - it's not, but rather it's rectangular when viewed from above. We all have images of Disney princesses in big, circular ball gowns, and when we see portaits from this time period, we think that is what the silhouette is; however, it's not. There is no substantial "butt bustle," like in the works of Fractalbot or Prepsage - that sort of silhouette you would see 100 years later in the 1880's; however, the era of Marie Antoinette was all about huge wide dresses with big hips, and squeezing your frame into as tight a corset as possible, resulting in rather substantial cleavage.

A bunch of you got it right - Samothrace and others.

Artina's dress took it even further than the 1880's, and into the turn of the 20th century - such a dress looks like it would be evening wear on the deck of the Titanic, rather than at the court at Versailles. And for Alotabitalittle, it looks downright medieval!

I can't remember if it was actually true, but I remember reading/hearing somewhere that her natural hair had prematurely turned white while she was imprisoned and awaiting execution.

as promised....
Super skoda- you've got a cool design but it feels a bit unfinished to me (and not because it' not in colour) and a thing that bugs me a lot is her left hand anatomy is kinda off.

Papervampire nice picture though imo you could've spend a lil more time on rendering her face, arms and legs. i liked the colors though.

prepsage i love the textures on the dress and the overall scene, the cat is really cute too. imo you should try to use some more refs for her face and body.

Thelema You have a nice concept, i think you should try to use more different colors and blend them to get more realistic effect. i think there are some anatomy problems that you could easily fix with using a refs.

La fairy cool to see you use some refs for the pose, try to use some refs for the face as well though. and like i about thelema's picture try to work on blending different colours together instead of using the standard colors.

onionface it's kina over imaginative concept for this Chow in my opinion, nice colors and it's funny too- love the flies.

arisun great design and style :)

gpalmer i think that a bit more contrast would really help to your character to pop out. it seems a bit blurry to me as well don't afraid of using some 'stronger" colours.
i love the expression on her face and you did a good job with the anatomy as well.
