I'm redesigning the look of the characters and world for the Men in Black animated series for a design class I'm taking...

Design limitations-
The characters have to be Agent J and Agent K but not necessarily the Agent J and Agent K from the movies.

Character background-
I wanted my agents to have a little more geek in them... like The Lone Gunmen from the Xfiles. Agent K was a huge sci-fi geek whose childhood hero was Dr Who (Tom Baker). He watched so much sci-fi as a kid that he actually believed aliens lived among us and started trying to find them. He was so successful that after wiping his memory on several occasions the agency finally decided to make him part of the team. He has an amazing natural talent for finding aliens and has become the agencies top operative. Agent J on the other hand is a newbie. He has a photographic memory and his head is filled with an amazing amount of book knowledge. He is a strange mix of style and awkwardness, intelligence and ignorance.

Design choices-
My first design choice was to enlarge the characters feet. I've always like the look of the Rescue Hero's toy designs... the big feet help the characters look strong and grounded. To balance that out I made the head and hands a little larger as well. I wanted K to be rather large but also feel a bit older. Before Tom Baker got into acting he worked in construction which is why he was so big and had that weathered look... I think of K the same way... he did a lot of manual labor before he became an agent. I also see him having a natural composure and grace like John Steed's character from the Avengers so I've been playing with giving him an umbrella to carry around all the time. The large scarf is a reference to Dr Who (though it could probably be a lot longer). Agent J is modeled after a character from a British sci-fi show called Red Dwarf. The character has two incarnations- the Cat, who is all style and grace- and Dwayne Dibley, who is a klutz and a major geek with buck teeth and hair cut in a bowl shape. I want agent J to be an awkward combination of those two extremes. He wears a really nice suit in an attempt to be stylish but it still looks awkward on him and he always feels a bit off balance with his huge feet and small build.

These are my latest designs... I've finally found a design for both characters faces that seem to be in the same basic style... my main problem with it is that J's head seems to old. I guess it feels old because its so angular.

Here are some older design. The rounder design of Agent J's head seems younger but the design doesn't feel as strong to me. Maybe I can find a combination of the two that will work.

Any C&C? I need to start finalizing these designs in the next couple days so I can finish my turnarounds....

Here are the turn-arounds.

I'm really struggling with the characters legs. I know how to draw legs but I've never really had to draw baggy pants in a stylized way before. The pants in the turnarounds feel a bit lumpy. Does anyone have any tips on how to draw baggy pants well. I need them to be simple (so they are easy to animate) yet still give enough information for the viewer to immediately tell which direction the knee is facing and also see which leg is bearing the most weight... Any C&C?

I like these Mermuse. The style is good and the proportions seem good, too. I really don't like Agent K's bald head. I feel it takes away from what could be a more imposing figure....maybe give a little more hair on top? And loose the umbrella. It could have some really cool gadgets hidden in it I'm sure, but once again it seems to take away from his dynamic. As for the pants: Try just having them be more straight. I think that might help. Agent J is great. No crits there. keep 'em coming! Great job!

I hadn't thought of that. The combination of the bald head and leaning on the umbrella like a cane makes him feel too old.

Thanks for the input...

I've gotten tired of just playing with the visual look of the character so I'm trying to figure out how I can redesign the world around them to give them a greater purpose....

The Hollywood MIB use gadgets to solve most of their problems (like the neuralizer thingy that makes people forget what they have seen) but the urban legend MIB use intimidation and threats (if not violence) to keep people quiet. Either way their goal is the same to keep the common man from knowing about the existence of aliens... but why. The more I thought of the use of intimidation to keep people quit the more I thought of the church in the middle ages.. not only did it control the governments of many nations but it also had its own army which could act as judge, jury, and executioner - killing anyone considered to be a heretic as well as waging war on a grand scale.

I've been thinking about setting the MIB in an alternate reality. Its 2002 but the church has control of all aspects of government. Templars patrol the streets, Cardinals pass judgments, and the Black Templars .. "the Men in Black" are the agents that deal with the churches greatest secret.. the alien presence. There is no room in the churches worldview or dogma for aliens (the very existence of aliens is a heresy) so their presence must be kept a secret and they must all be hunted down and destroyed.. it is the new crusade!

I see the world as looking very much the same as the world does now but grayer and colder with more gothic architecture, where people are less quick to speak their mind or to do anything that draws attention to themselves.

Here are some really quick sketches... the ones on the right are of an alien with its tentacles flailing about and another version with them drawn in. I would kind of like the aliens to have some similarity to spirits (transparent/iridescent/ intangible) ... they should feel alien but still seem like this same thing could be mistaken for an alien, an angel, a ghost, or even a fairy. It looks a bit too much like a jelly fish right now! I've always though it was interesting that similar supernatural events are attributed to different agents based on the worldview of the culture... was it an alien, an angel, or the gray neighbors?

Any C&C? Have I strayed too far from the MIB concept?

i like the new idea. much cooler than the old one. if you're able to, you might completely drop the MIB stuff and just be original, completely. additionally, do you think the cartoony style is appropriate for such a serious atmosphere?

I thought that Mermuse had to use an existing franchise and the one he has to work with is MIB. This new idea is so, so awesome! If I were you I'd use it for your own purposes with your own characters as well as for your class project. And as for the subject matter being too serious for cartoonish style....I think if he uses lots of harsh shadows like in the latest sketches he can't go wrong. Keep 'em coming, man! I would love to see some kind of animation test...!!!

Thanks for the input... it's very inspiring to have other people getting excited about the idea.

I think a slightly cartoony style will have to work since I'm still going to be working from a script from the animated series... but I can of coarse make it a very hard edged and high contrast cartoony style. At least now I have some very concrete ideas about what moods and themes I want to be evident in the final storyboards.
