Everyones comments have been so helpful so far.
This week I focused on refining the deliverators vehicle, I worked mainly on learning how to render cars with marker. It's not detriot style rendering but it reads well. Tell me what you think
http://www.brownlie.com/temp/len/snow_crash/cars/2_27-4/SAVE0031.jpg
here's a bumper study, normally I would have just drawn the bumper but I felt I could use the practic doing the whole vehicle. This took me about 2 hous ( I used a stop watch )
http://www.brownlie.com/temp/len/snow_crash/cars/2_27-4/SAVE0033.jpg
here is the version that I think I'm going to go with (more changes to come.) Notice how strong the contrast is,
http://www.brownlie.com/temp/len/snow_crash/cars/2_27-4/SAVE0035.jpg
Here is the same version I did over agian to experiment more with contrast as well as show the adjustability of the vehiclies suspension. I need to start labeling these.

wow, these have a great feel to them, love sssome of the concept work
suggestion wise, do you do thumbnails?
id love to see a bunch of these car ideas on a single page, just so i can soak in all the neat designs.
the last couple ones there seems like something funny is going on perspective wise with the the front of the cars, very slight though, maybe im just biased because i like the view on the first car better :D
cool stuff, your marker skills are great, what type of markers are those?

Thanks for the comments every one.
SilverSlash: I totally agree aboout the perspective. I checked it and it seemed all right, but its definitly not reading well. I'll have to resolve this problem when I render these in Photoshop a few weeks from now.

Very cool. I love concept car designs. One thing that has always perplexed me, this is a typical approach (albeit very cool) of rendering style for this field, whats confusing, is of all the concept car art I have seen, I never see anything like these on the road, ever. Some come close, but NEVER as cool as the stuff on the drawing board. Make sme wonder how these designs get lost in translation from concept to actual factory production. Ooops went on a tangent, sorry, great work! Peace! :D

Good morning everybody,
Adam:
I can't wait to do the eskamo Guy. I really identify with someone who has the words "poor impulse control" tatoed on there forhead. I'm a kyaker as well so, I can't wait to explore that areana too. So much to do, sooooooooo fun. I'm up all night every night doing these, it's a sickness by now. So much more fun than sanding toaster ( that's what I do for a living, I'm an industrial designer or as I call it a low class , which is why I can answer , wacom knights question.)
Wacom Knight:
I think I can answer your question because I deal with it every painful day at work.
First - Sketches lie. When it comes down to it there is alot of geomatry on any sketch that doesn't make sence. It could be a drafting error - thought some of these guys don't make them , there can be a human factors error - ie. your dimentions are a inch of and the user keeps bonking there hand ( this happened recently to me ) so you need to make what seems like a subtle change that dramatically changes the flavor of the design. , you also have manufacturing processes to deal with - just because you can draw it doesn't mean you can make it , and then there is the fear that having that much cool will scare away the consumer.
That's the biggest problem in my opinion; most people are afraid of cool, of inovation and of quality. We use the word wierd to often as a means of dismision. Now lets go to wal-mart.
ps. more sketches to come.

hello, I'm back and I'm full of energy so here are some more views and detials from the deliverator car. More to come over this week. I'm shooting to have this car done by next monday so I can start refining the deliverator suit. Then Enviroments (a real weakness for me) Everyones feed back has been super helpful. Can't wait to get more.
here is the rear end of the deliverators car. I will be re doing the front end with in the next couple of days, - it still seems pretty unresolved.
http://www.brownlie.com/temp/len/snow_crash/cars/car_rear.jpg
here is the pizza hatch detail, I did about five of these (fun) befor I got this version. I need to study mechanical details more.
http://www.brownlie.com/temp/len/snow_crash/cars/pizza_door.jpg
and finally an earlly attempt at the interior. I should have more versions of this by tommorow.

absolutely awesome - great attention to detail and really magnificent perspective work! I think one of the artists at Blur (Ed somebody?) is a Snow Crash fan as well, somewhere on his site he has some sketches of Hiro, Raven, the girl (been a while forgot her name!) and one of the other characters. I might just have to crack the book out again, this is really inspirational work!

Well, I think I'm about done with phase one for the deliverator car. In about a month I will do a photoshop rendering once I study my Belker Dvds ( which are taking forever to come in the mail)
Here is another version of the interior. I'm still not happy with it but I've been drawing alot of product at work lately and I'm burning out on drawing vehicles ( I'm doning 9 hours of construction vehicles a day then going home and drawing 3 more hours)
http://www.brownlie.com/temp/len/snow_crash/cars/interior_2.jpg
I've just started focosing on characters last night and it's been a rough start. I really lack a solid presentable character sketching technique, so any sugestions are not just apreciated but absolutely needed. Here is the desiverator pencil, I'm satisfied with this as a sketch but it doesn't sell ( though despite the pose has some life )
http://www.brownlie.com/temp/len/snow_crash/characters/hiro_suit_pencil.jpg
Then I experimented with a photocopy of the sketch. I layed some pastel over the copy and inked over it with a sable brush. At this point it lost all its life and looked like a bad comic book sketch, my heart sank. I then put some marker over it halfheartedly. Not my best moment. I really need a better way of presenting these sketches. I'm going to try half tone paper tonight. SUGESTIONS ARE DESPERATELY NEEDED. http://www.brownlie.com/temp/len/snow_crash/characters/hiro_suit_pastel.jpg
more to come.

i really like what's coming from this! great job, LEN
2 suggestions on the design (mind you these are more just matters of opinion)
-i think the seat position should be more laid back & lower, you know? for some reason, someone sitting in that sort of position seems cooler & the whole deliverator intro seemed to be a tangent into how cool hiro was lol i dunno that's my opinon
-the suit's looking pretty hi-tech. it's really cool, especially the boots. but it might be a little too hi-tech looking for 'crash. i was sort of picturing it to be something more akin to a mix between a formula 1 or nascar driver suit with the light armor/padding of a motorcyclist. covered with logos too, the pizza company's being the biggest of course, but seeing how the book goes into detail about the 'loglo', i figured there would be a lot of adverts EVERYWHERE. in my opinion, i think you should keep what you have, but tone down the tech details a bit & show more suit with adverts.
-at one point the book was talking about hiro practicing iaido (if i remember correctly, god i need to read it again). if that's the case, you might want to bend the swords a bit. a curved blade draws a lot quicker than a straight one
remember though, these are your designs though, so don't let me boss you around! lol these are just my opinions. keep it up! i can't wait to see more of the characters!

March 23rd, 2004, 08:34 PM
yeah i think ill is right on the mark. as far as the actual figure, his torso and forearms seem a bit on the long side, while his legs seem a bit on the short side. His left hand (our right) seems unnaturally turned as well. Not much, but it takes away a little from the presence of the character. Also, with so much work and attention on the car and suit, I'd like to see maybe some kind of upgrade on the pizza bag itself, it looks just like the bag the dominos guy uses right now! Maybe some kind of suitcase that uses a gyroscope to keep the pies level or something? I dunno, may be unnecessary/too much - i can't remember if the novel describes the bag itself or not. Also, is this a purely for-fun thing? Just curious :) Anyways, great job, keep em coming!
EDIT - maybe a two-handled case for the pies? They seem like a very critical part of the operation. Some kind of cool, steel case with a pair of handles on the sides, like its company policy to always have both hands on the case or something?
ill_logic
March 23rd, 2004, 10:23 PM
to be honest, i don't know if there was a bag or not. but if there is going to be a bag in the designs, i'd suggest something that YT'd be able to manage on her board (because she ended up delivering it after all)
looking at it again, the arms look a little short. or maybe it is the torso just being too long. the wrist looks ok, just uncomfortable lol
glad you don't mind me giving opinions. just trying to help!

ugh, getting back into figures is tough. I have alot of work to do in this dept. Adam, I agree with what your saying about the torso and the legs. Though the character is wearing coveralls which throw the proportions off a little. I was going for a sag in the pants area but when you compare the figire against the arms the proportions are way off. I'll map a figure over the suit and see it I can straiten it up. I'm not sure what you mean about the left arm, I'll have to put it in front of a mirror to see what's going on. I have so much figure work to do, tonight i'm off to my open figure drawing group that I havn't gone to in about 3 months - can you tell:( . Ugh too much product not enough figure. I'm almost overwelmed by how much I need to grow in this area.
I'm also going to resolve that pizza box as well. I'm thinking diamond plating. and a bulky heating unit. Make it ridicualous. Just like the world he's delivering in. Well, I'm off I'll have more Snow Crash stuff on monday. Thanks for everyones interest.

wow i take my eyes off for a second, and come back to find gold man.
while im certainly not the best person to give a crit ill try to throw some honesty your way,
your attention to detail and design is off the scales, grade a stuff, but something seems a little off with your figures they seem to be a bit stiff and have an odd feeling of weight to them.
i cant put my figure on it, but thats mostly due to the fact that on closer inspection your anatomy for the most part is correct and your line art is very well done.
from that i can only point u in two directions as to where the problem might be, and thats because im dealing with similar issues with my figures, it could be that u need to touch up and do some more drawing from life
or the problem might lie in the process in which you draw your figures, where one bad habit might be throwing all your skills for a loop
As of right now you certainly have all the elements, they just are not coming together optimally.
hope this helps your at a point where a lil bit of improvement could turn your ability from the great level to the jaw dropping level or at least thats my opinion. gl

Anatomy - 10.0
Linework - 10.0
Pose - 5.0
On all three figures the anatomy and linework is awesome - like an American Shirow ;) totally wicked! I am absolutely jealous. I think the poses/posture really need some work though. It may just have been what I was listening to when I first read Snow Crash, but Vitaly and the Meltdowns have always reminded me a little bit of ATDI, so I leeched some ref pics for you:

hmmm...
well the deliverator suit looks good. add some logos on it, & it'll look good.
lagos the gargoyle looks really young here. i thought he was on the old side. like ian holm, and i'd really play up the surveilance gear. according to the book, there was A LOT.
as for vitaly, you design is really good, but i dunno. it doesn't seem like vitaly to me for some reason. adam mentioned something about vitaly & the meltdowns reminding him of at the drive-in. personally, i think a band like atari teenage riot would serve as better inspiration. they're european, really technical, & super damn noisy. at the drive in were a damn good band, but atr seemed more like the sort of thing the book described in my opinion.
here are some small ref pics. note the massive amount of wires on stage in that one pic! lol
all & all though it's looking really good! keep it coming!

I can't wait to see how you handle Y.T. I loved her. Oh so much.
I think of the concepts the one that you have here that needs the most work is probably the gargoyle. In the book, i believe they were described as very bulky and covered with more electronics.

quick crit, your figure looks alot less stiff than before, the design on the clothes is awesome the greys and yellows are pretty neat.
however that face is a no go, totally not up to par with the rest of the figure. the hair looks a bit funny as well.

is that photoshop? the coloring looks pretty good,
right off the bat i notice the that the lower half of her seems pretty off, like its turned the wrong way and the pose looks hella uncomfortable , i honestly think u need to rework her from the waist down
her front arm seems short.
the armor is freaking fantastic, the forearm armor could use either a bit more complexity or a bit more simpleness to streamline them, right now they seem out of place with the body armor.
this however beats hands down your other attempt at coloring.
alot of good stuff going on
as always take everything i say with a grain of salt, hope i helped.
