ROUND #207 :: Military unit: The Hacker

DESCRIPTION

Military unit: The Hacker

It’s the year 2090, a few years after World War III... Officially, the war is over; but in the borderlands of the three remaining superpowers there is still conflict. War has changed however, as electro-magnetic fields have blocked out all wireless communication on the planet. This caused a new Spec Ops unit to arise; the Hacker. Not only does he have to infiltrate military bases in order to hack into the mainframe and mechanical units, he also has to be able to defend himself when discovered!

Design the military unit: The Hacker!

- Setting is futuristic, though no wireless devices!
- Hacker can ofcourse be male or female :punkgirl:
- The Hacker is a solitary unit, so he has to be able to defend himself
- Basically the Hacker is intelligent and stealthy, but also has a tough side.

Good Luck!

I've got a busy weekend coming up, so this is about as far as this will get.

For the curious, the green thing hanging around her neck is a crank-operated portable power supply.

I went for a near-future concept with this one, with equipment based on current tech and military gear. We've got body armor, USB cables, a rugged touchscreen PDA for hacking, an earpiece for audio interfaces and communications monitoring, nightvision/HUD goggles, and a carbine for self-defense.

After heavy casualties of humans in the beginning of WWIII, the war quickly became a war of technology. All of the major powers were finding ways to fight the war without actually having to be in it. When the war came to an end, the technologies that had been created were the only valuable possessions a side could own. This, in turn, created small conflicts that continued well after the war was over.

All of the major powers realized that to truly lead the world, one must own the best technology. Since it was far to dangerous to lose any more soldiers, droids were created with the stealth and technical abilities to retrieve valuable information from hostile environments. With their enhanced capabilities, they are hard to detect, harder to hit, and dangerous if caught. Some of their features include constant 360 degree vision, night vision, thermal imaging, spring enhanced leg structure for higher jumping and faster running, arm mounted plasma gun for defense, and the ability to connect to just about anything. On the rare occasion a hacker droid is caught, they have the ability to self detonate. First, they must find a way to launch their data storage unit in a way that it can be retrieved by another hacker or the hacker support teams in the area.

I made the character more of a cheery guy. He carries around a revolver tucked into his pants for when it's time to get down to business and a ring of USBs around his neck for all his hacking stuff and such.

Fallenangel: You're lucky, we were just setting up the poll and added you.

Cuts:

Collywobbles - though it's a cool illustration, you did not apply the 3/4 rule!

We were very very easy with the rules up until now, from this week on you have to follow the rules or you will not be added to the poll. To make it easy I've added the rules in the new ChoW description (as well as the new header! woohoo!)

my votes went to gtgauvin and janjager. they, for me, captured the feeling of "solitary survivor/fast bugger" best. most of the rest seemed like regular "badass superbuff hero marine" guys with some odd cables hanging around.
yes,it's kinda bad that collywobbles didn't get in,good illustration man! but rules be rules and i'm rather glad we pay more attention to 'em again. :)

And now, some crits:

FallenAngel: Great colors, detailed enough to make it appealing to look at for a while. I like that you even put in the safety switch on the rifle. I think the pouches on her leg are a bit too small. Look how tiny the buttons are. Just a dot. Her foot is too large and her legs are puffy - don't know if you did this on purpose because it's some sort of pressure suit - but it's usually best to err on the side of anatomically correct.

Carnifex: You get props for being so bold with your color choices! That's seriously intense! Nice piece and attitude. I can definitely see tank girl inspiration and I like the "freedom" this piece has. It's lose and fun.

Sillirian: Excellent Cyberpunk look. Dig the hair, dig the simple colorscheme, dig the mood and vibe this piece has! I am not crazy about her back, looks a little rushed and macabre (I think those are wires hooked up to her spine or something). But I can look past that because of the overall mood. Gave you my vote.

GTGauvin: One of the more thought out an planned sketches here. Props for knowing how important drawings are! Solid piece, good pose - just not a whole lot of "cool" or "new" in this piece. Agreed? Normal military dude, pretty much. Keyboards on the thighs is funny though.

Howie: This would be one of my favorites here, if it weren't for the boxy gasmask. Looks a little - not so cool. What I do dig is everything else! Cool style (don't know how you did that - quite unique painterly feel), cool wires an pouches - sort of Dune-style. Next time, you need a better head solution! Strong piece otherwise!

What's the matter people? Hardly any comments this round - I guess a lot of you are busy playing Starcraft 2, :p

IceMoon: Nice piece, you're ahead in the polls. A techincal geek question: Do you start coloring your black and white by first using the colorize function in the Hue/Saturation Image Adjustment or do you take a brush, set it to color and paint on top?

JanJager: Nice take. I like that she is not the regular "hot girl" and that you put tons of stuff on her, that hides her feminine shape somewhat. Maybe it's a bit too clunky though - I guess some clearer lines here an there would have been a good idea. What do you think?

fedde: Watch the anatomy. Should have worked out he sketch before coloring. He seems to have no real hip. Torso is too short. Nice Judge Dredd coming through in the design.

Dragon4Lunch is my fav
Sorry didn't get time to finish, a bunch of really cool designs this round.

ArtbyWard
August 4th, 2010, 01:00 PM
Heh Dragon4lunch I actually was playing SC2 :P. To answer your question, I use a color or overlay layer and paint on top when the painting is about 75% done. After this I just continue to paint on normal layers to loose the color layer effect just a little bit.

Some comments:

cameli: Nice to see more pieces that focus on design! Also the headpiece sketches are cool. I find the bright border distractive though.

Chrisproof: Cool design, it looks pretty realistic. Maybe you could have been slightly more sci-fi as the character looks like he could walk that desert right now in our time also.

Hellbeard: Your design is really cool, lots of stuff going on! I wish you had colored it though :). It would make it a lot more appealing, but I guess it was a time issue.

Holymane: Nice pose and linework. I do feel that you could have pushed the coloring more, to really make it pop. It looks a bit rushed right now.

JanJager: One of my favourites. She looks really convincing, and has a cool design! It would improve the piece I think if you made the highlights less white, played more with color.

Kamikazuh: Also one of my favourites. Really strong pose, it reads very nice and the blasted door is a nice touch.

Senira: I totally dig that you made a modeling sheet! Maybe you could've exaggerated the silhouet a bit more, playing with the style.

Sillirien: Also one of my favs. Totally digging his hair, the cyberpunk atmosphere and the design of his back.

Dragon4lunch: Nice painting, im actually digging this starwars vibe thats going on, and the little droid. Designwise the paints are a bit too much like soul pants, but otherwise great. Some color wouldve been nice :)

Mastertroglodyte: Digging the ruthlessness of the character, it fits the design well.

VoxInaudita: You've gone wild in your design, I like it.
