I have one word for you: CONTRAST

right now the image is hard to read because everything is pretty much at the same valu level. This is something that can be fixed relatively easily in the digital medium, but I wouldn't just crank up the contrast with the "brightness, contrast" option in photoshop. Its gonna take a fair amount of hand-painting to increase the contrast without losing subtly. Also, be sure to add lots of color variation. Right now I can tell that you're only using like three or four individual hues. This really flattens the composition, because when everything is the same color it appears that they exist on the same level in space. Take a look at how Andrew Jones handles color in his self portraits here on the forum, that should give you some ideas as to how you can make your painting look more realistic, and alive. Good luck on this painting and also on finding a new job...

sorry about the layoff man... ive been there.
hey man,, its a good reason to go solo!

i gotta back up McNerdyism on this.
you should work on your contrast, value, and light dynamics.

and dont forget to give special attention to,,, everything.

i gotta agree with these guys here. i saw the pencil drawing and you had soooo much detail in it, but it seems you've lost a lot of those details in that purple mud...dont be afraid to punch things more. i sometimes use the airbruch in ps set to color dodge, with the opacity at like, 7-15%, and i'll pick a dark toned color to dodge into it. this will give you a generally lighter area, but you will need to hand paint to knock the forms back in. good attempt, but i liked the drawing a lot more. it kinda reminds me of one i did a while back, minus the baby bong, of course. nice job.-c36

Yah, he definitely needs more contrast..from the environment, and within himself.
But listen to everyone else, not me =P

thnx guys-

i can get back to it once my demo reel is finished. I will hold off on putting in my reel after the comments you guys made.

McNallyism- I will work on the contrast, I will be able to find the right areas, but the difficulty is finding the good colors.

el coro-i dig your idea with the a-brush set to color dodge. i will play with it a little. it might give me a better idea on how to push my colors.

whats up man,

i really like this one, i agree with the whole contrast thing
you have a ton of detail thats just waiting to be picked out
which im sure your well aware of. but as far as putting it in your portfolio, i would add some highlights and maybe make some things that appear to metal look metal and use it as a colored sketch until you really have time to go back and put your heart into it. if you have the makings of a good peice
sell it as the makings of a good peice. im still waiting to see the insane cityscape you did finished.

oh yeah i sent you an email for a job intown, dont know the name of the company, but it sounded good, lol, anyways i got it sent to me from volt.com but i figured you might want to have a looksy.

peace

I was burpping my baby, and all of a sudden he had some nasty poo sound coming out of his butt, which reminded me of one my characters, the Fatman...
he has become a WIP, again, but I am enjoying the comments you guys gave me and I think I am heading in a good direction with this. next version...

I added some more saturated colors here and there, and he has more snap now. I am getting excited about working on this peice again.
I love my time with my son, it gives me a chance to paint at 1am, 4am, and even 6am.
