ART LEAD
Watercooler is looking for an Art Lead to join our social gaming startup. We are 67-strong, well-funded (backed by top-tier VCs and the world’s largest gaming company), profitable and offer a competitive salary, equity participation and benefits.
Watercooler got its start building TV and sports fan community sites, and we recently turned our attention to creating innovative, engaging social games. Our first title, Kingdoms of Camelot, has garnered top ratings and a strong (and growing) following on Facebook, and several title are poised to continue that success.
Note: We’re growing aggressively, but carefully. We’re extremely selective, with an emphasis on smarts, ethics and positive attitude. And we believe in small teams working collaboratively to build great products. WHAT YOU'LL DO:
The Art Lead will be responsible guiding a team of artists to transform wireframes and concept art into beautiful, usable games and provide post-launch support for new in-game features and content. Responsibilities include:
* Wearing multiple hats to help out with all aspects of a game's visual design, UI, art, animation, marketing artwork, and more.
* Work with dynamic teams of concept illustrators and visual designers, both in-house and external to the company
* Communicate with the Art Director and project Associate Producers, Studio Managers, and Porduct heads to define and collaborate on the aesthetic vision for a given title
* Turn wireframes and technical notes into visually compelling and meaningful designs
* Actively manage the asset pipeline for a game with an eye toward balancing delivery constraints (budget, time, quality); proactively communicate issues to Product teams
* Maintain a strong pool of contract illustrators and designers
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:
* 5+ years of design and/or illustration and/or 2D animation experience; social games experience a plus
* Advanced knowledge of Illustrator, Photoshop and Flash; 3D experience a plus
* Strong cross-functional communications skills
* Good understanding of HTML/CSS/AJAX a plus
* Strong passion for gaming, especially in the social/casual sphere
* Ability to take direction well, when necessary, and especially to give direction well and collaborate with a somewhat flat team: Must play well with others, and no prima donnas!
* A desire to grow your skills and experience; a natural mentor
* A terrific sense of humor.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:
At Watercooler, small teams of artists, designers, and engineers work together to collaborate on exciting games. A 2D artist will contribute anything from concept sketches and mock-ups to finished production-ready art for use in a game. An artist might be called upon to work on anything from a detailed, beautifully-rendered painting to be used in marketing graphics or splash screens to working on small simple graphics for icons and buttons ... Or even working on the buttons themselves, as our games often need GUIs as well! You'll take direction from the Art Director and Lead Artist, meet with the team to talk about and show off your work, make changes as needed, and work with engineers to ensure that your work is properly implemented into the game. You'll have a decent amount of leeway to create really cool stuff, and will hopefully be excited about contribute to the game design itself.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:
* 2+ years of illustration experience in Photoshop or Painter; Illustrator or Flash experience highly desirable but not a must.
* Great sense of line and form, color and lighting, human anatomy, technical and architectural design, and environmental painting skills
* Strong character and environment design skills are big plus
* Ability to work with a broad range of subjects and styles, from detailed and rendered paintings like you might see in console game or films concept art to simple and cartoony and more appropriate for a light-hearted casual game. And anywhere in-between!
* Strong passion for gaming, especially in the social/casual sphere. Experience working on them desirable but not absolutely necessary
* 3D experience a plus but not required
* Strong cross-functional communications skills; verbal, written, and visual
* Ability to take direction well and to play well with others. No prima donnas!
* A desire to grow your skills and experience
* A terrific sense of humor.
