ROUND #204:: Captain of the Sky Pirates
DESCRIPTION
Captain of the Sky Pirates
As a respected member of the Sky Pirates for more than ten years, it was obvious that after the previous captain suffered an “unfortunate accident” in battle, (s)he would take up the leadership of the pirate crew. Behold the new Captain of the Sky Pirates: feared by his/her opponents, admired by his/her crew!
Design the Captain of the Sky Pirates!
- Setting can be anything; steampunk, fantasy, sci-fi etc. as long as the “sky” part is evident !
- This is a Captain, so show his/her authority in your design.
- Extra points for design of the Sky Pirate ship!

hey cool thumbs king kratos the second and the fourth look very promising -
well this is my sketch so far - before i push it any further i'd do well to study up a bit on arms and drapery :O
i go with the battle experienced old fart captain - pilot goggles !! I predict a lot of them ^^

thnx mate :).Maybe also try a more interesting angle.

Oh man.
So - not to engage in shameless self-promotion - but I'm actually part of the cast/crew for a radio show called "Sky Pirates! (http://kwurradiotheater.wordpress.com/about-kwur-theater-of-the-air/sky-pirates/)". The show takes place in an airship-infused alternate 1933, and our main character, Gulliver Nash, is the Captain of the Sky Pirates.
I will, of course, need to draw him for this.

July 4th, 2010, 07:39 PM
kingkostas - I like thumb 4 a lot, looking up at someone gives a sense of power
Morten - Good start! Maybe try for some original elements tho xD
aaaaannd before you know it, it's 2:30am -_-' trying a different approach with this one

I feel like I've got the pirate part of the design down, but I'm not sure if it's got enough air in it...
This is my more fun design. I also have a post apocalyptic version I'm working on.

July 5th, 2010, 12:52 AM
Trying to flesh out the idea a little here. Going for a steam punk style sky pirate. Thought a parachute would keep the character more in theme, but I'm still not sure if it's airy enough. Feel free to critique.

Picture a crew of things, maybe men, maybe something worse - winging across the skies.
Their Captain speaks in tongues sometimes. And sometimes he speaks in teeth and claws.

July 5th, 2010, 04:22 AM
My first thought was "One piece" the pirate crews there are always so crazy ^^
My 2nd thought was pirates of t.c. ... not very creative so far.
I'll try to do some braining over this, to come up with something nice.

truepinkas-Nice equipment mate.keep building it
mastertroglodyte-The sketches are looking very interesting mate!!!

July 5th, 2010, 07:48 AM
@Hunchback: Nice flair so far, I am waiting for more.
@KingKostas: Nice Layouts, I think the 4th is the best so far. The last sketches give me a feeling of the carrebean, because of the light dress and the parrot I think.
Still searching. Heres a first sketch in a more classic black beard stile. The scenario would be a fantasy world in a technology stage somewhere around WW2. For now I call him cpt Scarf. He is a nasty greedy bastard when it comes to money, but for his crew he is like a father.
Another idea would be a Flash gordon scenario, with a younger captain and a more daring outfit. I will try both in sketches.

Is that a spring coil on his leg? I like it
richart
Nice with a new different approach.
hunchback
Good start. Its definitely pirate. Perhaps ad something connecting to air.
Truepinkas
Nice especial the upper body. Make sure the decorations on her knees and her feet's match.
MasterTroglodyte
Low left is my favourite.
Lazaruskitty
Great stem punk. Maybe have a stem punk airship in the background.
kingkostas
great thumbs especially the low right. The latest wip with the right girl makes me wonder why she only got one boot. Perhaps giving her a wooden leg or something
Vaejoun
Good character. Don't forget to show more of his body

Fun topic!, I'm gonna go for a sexy but kick-ass female pirate Captain, actress Lena Headey has the look i'm aiming for but i'll beef her up a bit so she looks as though she can go toe to toe with any smart arse tuff guy.
Looking good so far guys, keep it up :)

Hey Rusty, nics sketch as usual, but I am not sure if the ship will work this way. It needs some space to the ground.
Here a couple of more sketches, but I am still not sure, how to get the ship in there. ^^°
I am aiming for a look between these last 3

Vaejoun - Kudos for finding Tale Spin reference!
JanJager - Love the right version.
Hunchback - If you want, you could give her a mix of 1900s military garb (medals/insignias, etc) along with a frilled collar and coat.
Me, I'm trying for a Sky Cap'n Nemo oriental captain.

Cydonian - nice take on perspective. He's on top of the world - you've got that one down. His body - I know you've only reached sketching stage - right now it looks like a cartboard cutout, but his face is already spot on...
Rusty - you rule man. I can't wait to see your process.
So here's my approach: I'm going for a paraglider/parachute thing on her back, but I don't know quite how to go about it...

You may want to reconsider your idea a bit as it doesn't really follow the brief. First of all a pirate is something else than a hijacker, as pirates own their own ships whereas hijackers don't. :pirate: Also, he or she needs to be a captain who is distinctively above the crew.

Version 2. Howie's right, the first is a bit stiff in the pose. Although I think I prefer the first face so might combine the two somehow. Here she is proudly displaying a casket of gold!

Aly Fell - Great design! It'd be a shame if you didn't submit. How about leaving the sketchy drawing and throwing down a brisk wash of color to keep things quick and loose? Doesn't take as long as the usual render by a long shot, and you still get to jam with us! :D
king kostas - Looking pretty!
jan jager - really digging the colors, mate. Feels like a storybook illustration to me.
la-fairy - Oooh, vampirate is a legit crossover. With that perspective you'd definitely have to draw the ship directly beneath him, flat.
zypherax - I'm totally in love with your mood and palette! Please finish!
Alright, that's all for now. Gotta get sketching! Good job everyone!

long time no see, some nice works inhere for the sure! You people know what you are doin!:)

Haven't participated in one of these for awhile, might not have time to finish, but it'll be fun to do some sketches. Some really cool ideas so far. I was going for a Sci-fi look, although I might have to push that a bit more, and make her look more like a captain too.
Aly Fell - Love the linework, and all the details are really nice. Hope you have time to finish!
Beelow - really liking his face and pose.
Jan jager - lots of personality! really liking him so far.
kingkostas - really loving that design, I like the second one you have up there the best.

Aly, I'm in love with your character. You've got a knack for costume, and well, everything else. Yes, this is me :asskisser: I'd be really depressed if you didn't finish it, but you've got to pay the bills, eh?
Lianti — I feel like the placement of your character is awkward. I wonder if you couldn't switch the ship in the background to the left and move your character right? Or perhaps make that ship much larger, albeit faded somewhat so as not to compete w/ the foreground. I feel like anatomically speaking everything's looking good, and the colors make me think of a windy morning... I just feel like it needs some sprucing up, a little more work on edges and textures?
Well... I've deviated somewhat from anything I did in my thumbnails... but I don't hate it...yet. Give me ten minutes and I will. Anyway, feel free to tear this sucker apart everyone...

Mastertroglodyte-Interesting mate.Check the perspective some more. The object that he touches with his right arm looks misplaced.keep it up!!!

July 6th, 2010, 07:37 AM
Morten - Good pose, a figure of authority, like the cape feather design element a lot! Be careful of his leg placement.
hunchback - Looks promising, try exaggerating the silhouette more for some interesting happy accidents.
Lazaruskitty - Nice start, recognisable character!
Vaejoun - haha gotta love the golden tooth pirate grin, love the cartoon style. Lots of personality!
Reymus - Oooo I like the oriental idea, be careful with the angle of his legs and feet in relation to the body.
Cydonian - Looking forward to this one painted!
Refschaufscheik - hehe we need more sexy pirate captains like that! But maybe a little more kind :P
pacha - touchy subject, also not pirates. You could be a lot more creative!
Gominoid - haha cool mate, love his expression. He looks very 'mad max'
CKLamb - Nice pallete, like to see how this developes! Be careful of head size, it looks too small compared to the body.
Rusty - Always a pleasure seeing your lines, think I just jizzed
Pixeltuner - that method can create some really interesting shapes, and it shows!
Truepinkas - nice ideas in there, be careful with the arch of her back, at this angle it doesnt look natural, when you get into the painting be mindful of the lightsources. You can add some nice rimlights to her right side from the windows.
LA-Fairy - Lol vampirates! Be mindful of the angle of the ship beneath him to the characters perspective, right now he could
be lying down on the boat, since the character is face, on the side of the boat should be too, so you should make the boat horizontal.
NoShot - love the propeller hat! When you do thumbs dont be afriad to go really messy with your lines like kingkostas thumbs. That way you can also include a rough environment and think about the overall piece. Then later on get into details when you paint it out.
Cameli - Lovin the energy in those lines
kingkostas - mmmm colours... delicious
JanJager - Your chars have alot of personality!
Beelow - coming along nicely, love the uneasy angle
Broken Lawnmower - Add in some values (set this later to multiply and add a layer underneath and paint in greys) to seperate the shapes and make it more readable.
Aly Fell - super nice design, loving it! Not sure what that floating thing in the background is tho ;) hehe
gunnarsson - haha crazy style mate, like where its going! Reminds me of http://pulpfactor.com/art/1539/dave-devries-monsters-36-pics/
MJ_Alcazar - oo sci-fi pirate. Looking forward to how this developes, you managed to pull of sci-fi, pirate, and sky all in one piece!
Ostrander - Deffinately has character, nice pose and pirate design. Needs more sky tho, the scarf hints at that maybe some pilot goggles, or some sort of harness?
zypherax - freaky design, love where this is going
staticpen - Love it already as it is xD
Lianti - good start! The scale at the moment is a little off. Theres 2 things you could do, firstly you could add in some atmosphere haze to the ship behind him pushing it further back, creating more depth and seperating the 2 elements in there. Secondly you could have a different ship behind him travelling along side, with some smaller people in it. I think you can also play with colour temperature more, it seems overly cool toned, try bringing the character out in warmer tones to make him pop, and try not to use pure blacks but for example dark purples instead, hope that helps!
MasterTroglodyte - I like how you have only used the bird as a pirate cliche, but then again its not a parrot xD The leg to the side feels awkward, also it seems overly flat add in lots of shadow blobs, and keep in mind your main and secondary light sources.
rgeorge - Cute, nice sense of emotion and story! Be careful of her leg placement, also the arm holding the beam is too long, try beinging it closer to the body.
reginanegra - cool idea and tough angle to draw from. How about instead of wings, making nets with baloons, or propellars, or go crazy and add matrix style hover pads and make it sci-fi?
Hope the comments help :)

Pixeltuner I dig it.
Aly Fell Im with those who want to see you finish, this ones really unique!
gunnarson really cool, I can get into that world of yours. I almost want to see the whole thing lifted by a balloon or something. (it looks like its sitting in water)
staticpen that gorgeous, I imagine that guy being a lot of weight to carry for an airship. It reminds me of Craig Mullins sketches. Beautiful!

than you to those who have given me pointers, although I'm not quite sure if I should go about changing the height of the figure, as that would probably mean I'd need to redraw and render what I already have...
regardless, here's some more progress, mainly just atmospheric rendering and a few alterations in the character's clothing design... now I really must render further.

Aly: I love where you're going with this! Her costume design is superb. One small crit - give her facial expression some attitude! Right now it's really bland in comparison to the confidence and aggression in her pose.
Here's the first pass of detail over my thumbnail. I was trying to go for something cinematic and get out of my vertical composition comfort zone. I also opted for the ruggedly handsome roguish look for my captain.
With any luck I won't get swamped with work at the end of the week and actually finish this in time :P

Very nice sketches so far:
@richart: thx, I always aime for personality first, then I start with the dress and layout.
@nikaile: O like the way how the wheel is twisted and different.
@Cameli: Yaar ! Godda love the 2nd one XD
Here is my actual version, but I am really not so sure about the layout, it was more a shot into the blue... think I should redo it. Wadda'ya think ?

vaejoun - Nice! Only thing I would change would be the vertical perspective lines. They just go straight up. Sending them in a bit up an upward cone would be more appropriate for the angle, and more dramatic to boot. :)

dragon4lunch — something about her left knee (our right) looks "noodle-ish" and perhaps a skosh elongated. (not sure if you wanted a crit, or no—hehe)
staticpen — I'm not sure what value my crits have, if any, and in your case it was just the wheels in my mind spinning of their own accord, no pilot, no purpose. It was really only a matter of preference, perhaps.
At any rate, I'm still trying to push the values and get a tighter B/W before I start moving into color... I'm probably taking waaaaaaaaay too long...

Sentinel: The detail on your guys face inspired me to do more detail instead of the cartoony look I'm used to. Looking forward to seeing more work done on it.
Vertebra: Totally thought of Jack Sparrow when I first looked at it. Your back leg seems a bit thin to me but that could be because the background isn't finished.
Madsamuri: Maybe you could do a new sketch right over the old one because I still like the composition.
JanJager: Your dude reminds me of Porko Rosso for some reason, liking the colors!
Sentinel kind of inspired me to do something more dynamic. I jotted down Young American Indian with white hair, Sky Captain of the Stars. So that's been kind of my driving force.

A little static maybe, think they are in the sky, boarding other flying ships with a lot of wind, maybe that helps.
Thanks for the nice comments on my last step. Though I liked his look, the overall thing was kinda lame, he was just standing there. Then I thought, hey, its a sky pirate, why not let that fat bastard fly ?
and here he is, wearing some kinda jetpack and boosting through the sky with a giant canon in his hand. I think his pants will be a little more unusual, but I like the direction this is going. just gives more room for the ship or other things.

July 7th, 2010, 11:23 AM
These are some entries that stood out for me:
Mark Tarrisse - Nice start man! I like the composition. Watch his left arm though, its looking a little small in the upper regions compared to the rest of him. Actually everytime I look at it I'm not sure, so maybe that's not the issue, but for somer reason I feel awkward in that area. Good entry, can't wait to see how it goes!
Vaejoun - Sweet sketch man, very dynamic. No crits at this point, just make sure you get his right hand looking perfect before you get too far!
JanJager - Nice work man, looks like your about finished?
dragon4lunch - I like your approach a lot, taking it way in the future and working a scene up in the clouds. Good stuff looking forward to see it progress!
vertebra - Really enjoy the perspective your taking here, just watch the shoulders getting too hunched and close to his head.
For some damn reason I couldn't finish my last CHOW entry, seems like a common problem around here. Still working to break that. Here's my wip for this round. Still need to work out the ship in the background, among other things on the character. Trying a different style here, disregarding proper proportion haha...uhhhh idk but I like it so far.

Mephistoau - Her shirt would not be cinching into her cleavage like that. if you just keep the breasts as they are but draw the shirt as a straight line in between the two breasts it would look better. P.S. she totally reminds me of young Touched by an Angel lady that is in the original Battlestar.

MasterTroglodyte - I like where you are going with this piece - all the tech suit the theme - but don't forget the pirate angle. At this moment it has a more military approach than piraty. But keep it up!
Vajoun - Yours are getting better and better. But I really like this one - the jetpack idea's brilliant! Slash some colour down!
Sentinel - I hope you finish - the wide angle works for you. He's one handsome pirate - can I keep him? ;)
Madsamuri2240 - Hehe - I like you're concept though - hooker or not :)
Twentyone - keep it up - very modern; private gone bad! Nice...
Obliviongrin - digging the perspective - your concept is very dynamic. Can't wait to see where this is going...

Great progress mates.
Ostrander it came out nice.Maybe work some more to clearly separate him from the background because it may gives a little feeling that he is not that far from the mountains and still he is so taller than them.So maybe it needs more depth or a series of smaller objects lost in the depth(rocks or whatever). It will also be a trail to move in the second(background) part which also contains the sky element(skyship)
here some more progress :)

jac-k: Nothing wrong with skimpy outfits :)
Let's see: I do like the bubble gum version, her smirk right now is not as hot - but as you probably know - getting the face right and to figure out the expression - is one of the toughest parts. So many option. She could be blowing up her pony tail, for example. Nice attitude. Of course here I am, where my captain just looks over to the side with a neutral/confident look.
Maybe you want to experiment with different holster positions. A cool, low-hanging one might be sweet.
Maybe she could hold some gloves in her right hand. Maybe a cool flag or graphic element...
That said, it's a promising start what you have there and your rendering skills are evident. Looking forward to the finished piece!

Jasper: Hey, thanks man. Appreciated.
As far as comments/crits go: Right now your character is depressing, because of his terrible state. He doesn't seem to have well functioning arms/hands and why are his legs so short? He is probably supposed to be a survivor of a terrible war-incident. But if people can give him cool robot legs - why not make 'em nice an long, less bulky?
Ostrander: Technically I bet you can make this image into a pretty solid piece, as I can tell you're not new to painting. Skill is evident, no doubt!
Here some things to consider:
- If he bandanna is blowing in the wind like a maniac, why is his feather just sitting there? You better not miss something like this - in the final piece! People pick up on things like that.
- Secondly: You should try an push the design overall. Right now there is nothing we haven't seen before. The flying ship in the background looks like the Weatherlight from Magic the Gathering, with its wings.
http://www.wizards.com/magic/images/mtgcom/wallpapers/wallpaper_weatherlight_800x600.jpg
The pirate himself, which of course is the important element for this topic, has nothing special or particularly fancy in his outfit, expresion, face or presentation. To make this into a top vote getter (or a strong portfolio piece) you'd have to manage to paint this guy with ridiculous skills.
Howie
July 7th, 2010, 04:10 PM
klesk33: Cool deign, interesting combination of tech and pirate
Sidharth Chaturvedi: I like the pet eagle idea, maybe get som reference though for its wings
Beelow: the drawing looks pretty tight but the colors feel a little washed out. The design definitely says pirate but i think its lacking some Sky Pirate, maybe after you finish the background it will help
jac-k: looks good so far, i like the pose. Her forearms seem a little long. The background needs some more details, like some cool clouds, other sky ships or maybe just some ropes hanging from her ship. I think she needs some medals or a cool hat or something just so she looks more like a captain and not just another crew member
Mephistoau: The pose feels pretty stiff since you have 3 out of the 4 limbs completely outstretched and her right foot (our left) looks pretty awkward try taking a picture of your own foot in that position to help with the posing. You have a pretty traditional looking pirate and the a very sci-fi looking weapon and it feels out of place. I would say either give her a more traditional gun or bring some more of that sci-fi element into other areas of the picture
Jasper: Interesting design, doesn't really look like a pirate more like a robot or cyborg, but maybe the environment you put him in will help explain it better
Obliviongrin: Nice composition, really like the way you have him posed. Having other people in the foreground below him really makes him seem like a powerful leader. His right foot looks a little small and the posing of his left leg is a little awkward but that will probably be fixed when you go to color it.
Feil Magnus: The light clouds behind his silhouette is nice. The proportions look a little off, his head is big and his arms are a little short. The contrast is nice but maybe try and include some more mid-tones unless your going for a more comic book style of rendering.
rgeorge: The composition feels pretty stagnant because all the background elements are either perfectly horizontal or vertical, try and work with perspective and create angles that lead the viewer around more deliberately
Vaejoun: Nice start, like the gestural line work a lot.
Mark Tarrisse: looking good so far, nice composition. Try and indicate a stronger light source and his arms look a little short.
Chiko: nice sketches so far, try and get a powerful silhouette
gdlr: Are you using a tablet? Turn on pen pressure so you dont just get a contant thick line its very difficult to sketch that way. Think more in terms of general shapes at first and ignore detail
twentyone: the berret makes him look more like a military commander than a sky pirate captain, show some more of his body... don't cut off his hands
Rarebit: the values and mood are looking pretty solid already. His design is a little bland at the moment, maybe give him some armor or something to break up the sweatshirt shape some more
delightful_piffle: dont exactly understand how he is holding himself up like that. The star at the end of his wand looks a little cheesy. Look at some reference for the posing and details like the wheel of the ship
madsamuri2240: Looks pretty ambitious, but it looks promising so far...im a little confused at what his right (our left) leg is doing
vertebra: looking good so far, like the low camera angle.
MasterTroglodyte: Nice values...the right side (our left) of his vest is too simple in shape, try and make it conform more to his body. Same thing with the legs, try and feel the anatomy underneath his cloths
staticpen: Try taking the pose yourself and taking a picture, it will definitely help with the positioning of his arms. I think having two different mechanical legs like that is a little distracting, it puts more focus on the legs rather than the rest of the character.
dragon4lunch: Looks very nice so far, i like the style. Separate the values more where the side of her body and cape meet, its hard to tell where one ends the other begins.
JanJager: Looks great so far, definitely screams Sky Pirate Captain. I like all the stuff you have hanging off of him and the scrolls coming out of his gloves adds a lot of depth
BettyHime: Cool idea making him a kid, interested to see what your sketch looks like.
nikaile: Nice composition, looks like your going to have some cool steam punk stuff going on with that wheel. The position of her arm is a little awkward. I understand that its bent but it looks like her elbow attaches to her shoulder.
staticpen: Looks great, you've got some really nice atmosphere going
Vaejoun: I think the composition works, just watch out not to clip off his elbow on the right side
AvisNocturna: I like the design, work on the anatomy some more, his foot kicking forward isnt at the right angle. Where his hand is holding the rope for some reason is creating some depth problems for me, it makes the ship look like its close to him and really small
Ishren: I like the pose, try not to use so many lines to describe one curve it makes it look messy. look forward to seeing it at a later stage
Sentinel.: Love the horizontal composition and i like the face, can't wait to see more
Cameli: Great sketches, i like the second a lot
Cydonian: Cool idea having him at the top of the ship there, you chose a pretty tough perspective, the proportions are off ... his legs seem really short. The ellipse of the tower he is standing in is kinda wobbly, try flipping the canvas horizontally and it will probably become more apparent
zypherax: Interesting design, almost seems like a ghost or a zombie. the head is a little small, also I'm not sure if its male or female. Try and develop a stronger light source.
maeshanne: Interesting idea, like the sketch although the arms seem a little awkwardly posed
richart: the silhouette looks kind of odd when you have all his limbs close to his body like that. Is he wearing a glider? maybe show some straps around him so we know its attached to him
Fumble: the pose it a little stiff and his neck is pretty long, nice values though. Maybe try and bending his legs a little more they are a little to out straight
kingkostas: nice colors, the bottom of her dress seems a little too solid and doesn't look like cloth, i thought she was standing in a barrel or something at first.
reginanegra: interesting compositon, try taking some reference shots to help with anatomy and proportions
Lianti: looking good, seems more like a regular guy than a sky captain though. Extend the city in the background above the platform he is standing on, right now its creating a tangent
Ostrander: really nice, i love that initial sketch... i think there is something the rendered ones are lacking that the sketch has. Also i like his legs better when they are together rather than spread apart
MJ_Alcazar: nice design so far, her peg leg is pretty interesting. Any plans for a background?
gunnarsson: I dont know if this would work as a concept for a game or movie but i really like where its going. Love his face
Aly Fell: Nice design, love all the details. The pose seems a little forced though, like someone asked her to take that pose rather than her just posing like that naturally
Broken Lawnmower: Nice composition, and the pose looks pretty interesting
NoShot: I like it so far, propeller hat is a nice touch. Maybe try and give him something more decorative so he looks like the captain
LA-Fairy: the design needs some more work, seems more like a regualr crew member than the captain
Truepinkas: Interesting design, i like her mask... try and get a tighter drawing before coloring and rendering, elements in the background like the handrails look sloppy
Pixeltuner: really nice, love the colors and atmosphere, his shoulders look a little narrow though
CKLamb: strong silhouette but im not sure he looks like a sky pirate
Gominoid: good start, his lower half seems a little short, or his arms are too long
pacha: nice silhouettes, try and vary their shapes more though they are all pretty similar
Refschaufscheik: cool sketch, her foot doesn't seem like its planted on the guys hand, maybe take a reference shot to get the posing to look more convincing
Reymus: I like the oriental influence, posing could be a little more relaxed, he looks pretty nervous about something
Rusty: beautiful sketch, is she going to be a naked Sky Pirate Captain :)
Lazaruskitty: really solid drawing so far, love the gun arm... look forward to seeing more
hunchback: good start, values are looking strong

Howie: Thank you for the comment. While I understand what your saying, I would like to point out that the objective of the activity is to design a character, not a pirate-armor fetish, and adding armor isn't necessarily a character design cure-all.
Allstar87: It looks like you put the face of your subject in perspective but not its head. I think you will find that his hat needs to sit back in order to align itself perspectivaly with the rest of the figure, and that the tendons of his neck appear to be attached too far up his jaw towards his chin.
madsamuri2240: Im a fan of the right gorilla's expression.
Ostrander: Your design is a classical buccaneer that captains an old galleon... with wings? What you've done so far is well executed, i'd like to see you do more designing.
Beelow: If i'm not being to forward, I feel the same way about your character as i do Ostrander's.

Thanks to everyone who provided me with some c&c, much appreciated!
So I fiddled about a bit with this, and made some changes based on some of the crits that were given, hopefully it's a bit more palatable. It's still in the blocking in stage which made it easy enough to change some of the typical piratey stuff going on with it. I wasn't sure about his sword so I gave him a robotic hand tentacle whip thingy, instead of a hook. And I gave him a robotic prosthesis for a leg, even though it's kinda been (being) done. I'm still up for suggestions on anything.

July 8th, 2010, 01:05 AM
Here is a paintover I did for you Ostrander, I hope you don't mind. Mainly what I felt with you painting was the illusion of depth and the stiffness of you're character. I pretty much changed the leg to the left to get rid of that straight leg thing you have going with him. Put the boat in a makeshift perspective, it's not accurate, but thought I would point that out. Big to small is important. Remember that things get little as it progresses to background. I did that by painting smaller shapes for ground. Clouds have perspective as well. Big to small. Atmosphere is important. You did it somewhat. Be brave and knock that background to the back, by lessening value, saturation, contrast. Got rid of those blacks shapes in the middle ground. If you have to do another layer and put it on top, do so, and erase out what you did not want to paint. Remember that this is digital. Even though in real life stuff is way dark against the sun almost sillouetted, you can still paint in value to separate stuff to make it apparent that stuff is behind stuff. I did that with the arm to the left. Edges are important to put stuff behind stuff as well. I did in several spots including that left arm by softening edge. A mixture of both really helps. I tend to exaggerate a bit more with my edges so it all depends on you how far you want to exaggerate. Other leg, I rounded the bottom off more on each segment progressively becoming more circle. Remember perspective. You want Illusion of depth. I think that's about it. I really like where you are going with your's, I would like it to be a great painting. I think I did enough to get my point across and hope it helps. Good luck.

Aly:
Here's the first pass of detail over my thumbnail. I was trying to go for something cinematic and get out of my vertical composition comfort zone. I also opted for the ruggedly handsome roguish look for my captain.
With any luck I won't get swamped with work at the end of the week and actually finish this in time :P
It's actually heartbreaking to see the wips that never reach the finals. It would be too presumptuous of me to ask you to try harder. They're just so good and its sad to seem them go waste. (I mean that as a compliment).

Rarebit: I totally agree that armor isn't always the solution and I wasn't suggesting that, I was only using it as an example of something you could do. I just think your character needs something to set him apart from the average joe, he looks like someone I'd pass by on the street. I can't really tell what kind of world he's in, is it post apocalyptic, modern day, or something else?
Another update... got rid of the glowing hole in his stomach, changed his weapon to a staff type object and started messing with the background

here is what i have so far, i ve gone for a more steampunk look for the ship. i need some feedback on this idea i had, instead of a normal pirate flag i came up with this idea of a mechanical orb thingie projecting a kind of hologram of the flag in the clouds. the thing is, composition-wise should i keep it on the upper left side or is it getting too crowded there? also i ll change the sword hand a bit, i am not liking the perspective.
any other suggestions and critiques are welcomed! :D

dragon4lunch - it's looking great! As far as a crit goes, I suppose you could add some softer edges in certain spots. I think if I compare this to some of the A-class chow winners stuff, I think that is one thing they have going on that this doesn't. I think the softer edges would look best on a couple of the fabrics she is wearing and the outlines of her face (it seems a little 'shiny' right now, I think softening it would make it more matte). But really, I think you are doing a pretty fantastic job here!

Astrobiology: Now that's the kind of crit we need around here! Excellent observation and very much appreciated! I will make sure to work on softening some edges and continue to strive for improvement. I want to make this my best technically executed character piece.
mcotie: Strong drawing, great style. I dig his expressive face and tattoo. On a personal note - I don't quite like the in your face brutality. Not exactly funny to see a human head with a dagger in it. Also: Other than the tattoo, I can't see any evidence of the flying aspect.

I think your work have an interesting overall style but maybe it seems a little more rounded and that probably gives out the need for some more solid forms.I am not sure though because it have a certain style.Maybe you could play a little with more colors to break the monotony, but then it will probably lose this certain style it have.I guess you just have to experiment with it a little more and see if something interesting comes up.It have a traditional classic feel now.

Hello all, well here's my pirate idea... I am really unsure if I will be able to finish this, as tonight and all tomorrow I can't work on it at all! Well, maybe I will find a way, as I'm kind of excited about this.
I will add hair/hat at some point, I just haven't yet figured out how I want it to look.
I would LOVE some crit, especially in regards to the composition. I feel like if I penciled all his henchman and the ship, it would really just be too much to look at. How's the anatomy look also? Ah feet are too small, but I tried to be really careful this time, to avoid last time's mistakes.

AWESOME entries for this round! There all so different, it really makes me think about how I can improve my approach to these :D
The way I imagine it in my head is, this guy worked with an air pirate group for ten years to gain there trust. Once he did that he picked the right moment to over throw the head, which was a silent assasination, all witnesses were killed too. He gives the crew this story of an attack by there rivals and since he was the no.2 guy, the desision to make him the new leader is unanimous.

You can see him here putting on armor, which is the armor that the leader wears and so every other piece of clothing hes wearing im going to make very raggy and battle worn, to contrast and also to show a little more the story behing the image. And thats the dead old captain on the left who I dont know what to do with yet, I might just have him in a tshirt and boxers to really make sure the point gets across that my main character is after taking his armor :P. Well see, im still sketching and working out composition

@kingkostas - i love this! great colours and nice composition. the only thing i would say is that for some reason i feel like the image would sit more comfortably if she was positioned on the left third line instead of on the right. it feels like there isn';t enough space in front of her to show the distance n front of her or something.. but i am a total hack when it comes to composition so i could be totally wrong! nice work though!
@Malakuko - awesome idea! i love how you've worked a back story in and everything. hope you get to finish it!
@Arthur 'Two Sheds' - freakin' awesome work!!!
@Ostrander - awesome work! love his 'arm'. might it be worth introducing some sort of contrasting colour into the palette to add interest? maybe the lights on his mechanical arm could be a different colour to draw the eye? i only say that cause i've looked at your image like 20 times and that's the first time i've noticed the arm.. just an idea though! looks awesome!
here is my update.. just polishing away at my image.. added a little 'look-out' in a 'crows nest'. thoughts are most welcome!

It's kinda late now (almost 4 am here) so i'm going to hit the sack soon. When I wake up tomorrow I'll probably work on the face first thing - I don't like it right now, looks way too young and not authoritative enough

K-Mo - That is about the best thing ever. I love it! But whom did he defeat to take the helm of his mighty sky galleon?
Vertebra - I guess it is part of character design to find references but... ...uh, you can totally see that guy's religion. On a side note, it always cracks me up when artists draw demons' anatomy in that crotchal region and they're circumcised.
Anyhoo, back to K-Mo. I demand you now write a book and illustrate it based on this. I will be first in line to buy one.

K-Mo - That's a really interesting take on the topic, and a really innocent and playful feel to it, I think maybe boosting your shadows a little bit more will really help it pop!
My progress so far, I am aware that the scarf is gay :p but I'm unsure what to do in it's place, either way, I still got a load left to do, most of it is at the rough in stage still. I need to figure out how to paint clouds as well....
I tried to compose it as if it were a book cover as oppose to just a straight character design, as it's something I'd like to get into and I need the practice!

vaejoun - I did a paintover of yours regarding my opinions on the color.
-I pushed your value range a bit more. You've got clear lights and darks, but it lacks vibrancy. I brightened the light source in the sky and the areas that were clearly exposed to that light. (In daylight images, you want your highlights to be in the 90s on the Brightness indicator when you color pick.)
-With such a wonderful job you did designing the character (and he is awesome!), why not go after the color and get saturated? We don't see many objects at full chroma in real life, but a sky pirate with rocket boots isn't very realistic, no? So go for broke! In the areas I painted over, I increased the saturation in addition to changing the value.
-I darkened the value of the weapons because it causes the silhouette of your character to pop better against the background.
-The intensity of those rocket boots is pretty strong, so feel free to really lose the character's feet in the exhaust and light source. I made changes there.
-I darkened the side of the nose not hit by light, and through some red on the side that's getting reflected light from the collar.
-On top of lightening the light source in the sky, I darkened the other side. The sky is blue, but the light hitting the character is warm, so there's a really faint layer of yellow over the top left area of the sky and the arm on that side of the canvas.

Great stuff! I hope I helped in some way. :)
astrobiology - Hey! Very unique idea with the winged guys carrying the ship. You asked for compositional help, so here are my thoughts:
This is a "captain" character, so placing his head on a higher level of the picture place is an old classical way of suggesting authority. I moved the winged people and the ship down to the next intersection on the armature (it's the bunch of faint red lines I left up) to suggest subordination. The size of the ship is smaller here, too, as it was swallowing your character and making him less of a figure to be reckoned with. I also changed up the wings a little bit to give them more life.

Thanks staticpen, that helps. I drew him close originally because I thought it would look odd if he was too far away from his ship, but this looks good, not too far. I'll mess around with that. Yeah wings were just placeholders for until I look at enough wing reference, kinda daunting, wings are.

R0ok - Hey man for some reason I felt like doing a paintover of yours. Never done it before but its one awesome thing about this site!
First of all I just thought It would be cool to lift up the shorts a little so we can see his leg attach to the metal peg leg. I straightend out the hand on the left to give it more force and raised the other hand to break the symmetry. Another thing you could think of doing is adding places where no light gets in, the Ambient occlusion, that always helps push the realism, I didnt really go into to it too much in the PO though. Also I made the foot hang over the edge a little to give it volume. Thats pretty much it, its a really good Image but you should push it further! :D

Some great detailing going on in the face and shirt, really great work. Some great colours to, especially on the skin. However I'm seeing a bit of a proportion issue with his torso, it's way to long. It's making his arms look short and distracting from the great work you've got in the areas I mentioned earlier!

Lineart (for the most part). Its too compositionally heavy on the left side so I'm gonna draw one additional character in on the right to frame that empty space. I'm thinking it would most likely be an animal, like a rat or bird, something sort of badass that would live in a sky ship.

Iviatt - love how curvy she is! i'd love to see how it develops!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v46/kaahjay/chow-pirate5.jpg
ok shortened the torso, changed a LOT of things...now I need to add a cutlass. meh, have no time, so costume can't be as kickass as i wanted.

Iviatt: I like your idea with the eye-patch - a sort of ripped in half gas mask! Very nice! You do know you don't have much time left to finish this piece though, right?
Her right leg is a bit confusing, but I assume it's supposed to come through the railing... Her pose seems a bit - awkward teenager-trying-to-be-sexy, or something. Not very Captain-like. What do you think?

Just got started with this, still a ton to do. Might restart completely. Will be going for a jetpack on his back - just some placeholder squiggles for now. He also tells me he'd like another arm.

Well, if there are any last minute critiques I'd appreciate 'em!!! I've not posted for a while but I've been blown away by quite a few of the posts I've seen...
So my apologies for not offering crits right now... I will attempt to do so if opportunity permits... Naturally I don't expect more from anyone else.
Oh boy... I need to work faster.

Mastertroglodyte - it's coming along reallyw ell! As for the crits, it's kind of hard to say, I mean, tghere are things that are a bit off but I think that you'd fix them as you go along. I think what needs to be worked on the most is the form of the character, I think pushing the values can really help.

rgeorge: Thanks man! I will do my best to finish it tonight when I get back in town.
Malakuko: Wow, thanks for that! I agree with a lot of the changes you made. I always wanted to repaint his right arm so that the weapons would appear less symmetrical, and hopefully do something to help the pose as well. It also looks really cool with some heavy darks under the cape - cheers!

heavy liquid: that doesn't look like a pirate or like its in the sky. looks like some apocalyptic ninja.
Sidharth: looks cool, but her sword is looking rather impotent! maybe she could hold it at a more lively angle :)
dragon4lunch: that looks great. however, the logo on the wall could look a lot better. right now it just looks like someone took a marker to the wall.
Rook: lookin good, but the left arm is very stiff. Melakuko's paint over is good but the right arm doesn't look like it's going back in perspective, it just looks tiny. try desaturating the color as it goes farther back.
Rusty: oh man, I love that! hope you finish it in time!
Here is my WIP, a little generic looking atm:

Yea I'd probably have to agree with you on that one. Her pose doesn't exactly communicate captain, but I still like it, I think it has a good, non-static, rhythm. Sadly I dont think I'll be able to get around to the painting as I'm tablet-less today and some of tomorrow. If I do get a chance, I'll power out some painting and rendering. Hopefully someway somehow we are gifted with an extension. Thanks for the feedback dragon.

Some changes.
Rusty: I love your draw. It's just an idea, but if you want your pose and add some charisma, perhaps you would give her some years.
Kayness : I like your composition. I don't know if you want add some things around your character, but i think his left arm is rigid compared his relaxed face. Your work on your skin is great !
Dragon4lunch: I like your character and colours. Some little things i think you could add: Some straight lines in your clothes and some volumetric effects in your Background as on your character.

IVIATT really nice sketch man. For that blank area I think just a really detailed sky might do the trick, and wont take too much focus off the character
Veshkau Id just do whatever design you can think of at this late stage man, its a pretty cool idea!
Cameli LOVE that guy haha! :D Kinda wish the cannons were still there
Rusty Awesome as usual! :) your sketches asways look so nice man
R0oK no prob man! sometimes after looking at your painting for ages you can miss stuff
Liffey whats wrong with a fat pirate with one tiny arm? haha! :D
Really hope I finish this one. Need to start thinking about colors :P

IVIATT - I'm a huge fan! I really enjoy how most of your stuff I have seen has a definite style to it, which repeats through all your work. A lot of times a 'style' can become a trope, but yours does not. And while I agree the pose in this is not super 'Captain'... she's still pretty neat and I don't think it's a huge worry.
Here is my update... I think I am still having serious composition issues. I'm loving my captain though! Really think finishing this is not in the cards for me however. Hmm.

Well, I just unexpectedly lost about 17 hours worth of work time last night and today, and I'm redoing my deck tomorrow, so it looks like there's no way I'll finish this one in time, but I like my concept enough that I'll finish it and post it in this thread in a week or so. rgeorge:i like how much of a story i get out of looking through your piece.
reginanegra:interesting perspective. fun use of texture. ^_^ robo bird!
Fumble:good strong shillohette
maeshanne:who needs clothes anyway
vertebra:perspective from that angle is tough and i am excited to see you nail this piece!
Sentinel. :im a huge fan of your work. excited to see this finished:)
nikaile:i can already see the emotion on the characters face. im excited to see this one finished
Ishren: good start keep it up
dragon4lunch:great environment. i love the costume. some thing about it seems a bit form fitting but its renderred very well.
AvisNocturna:nice angle on this piece. :)
BettyHime:i think this has potential to be a really fun piece
madsamuri2240:i really like your color palette and the general direction with this piece.
Rarebit:i cant put my fingure on why but i am a fan of what you are doing in this piece. i love the muted tones and the captn's expressionless face.
twentyone:wow. you have an armada. capt'n and crew. nicely done
Howie:nice textures, unique style, im a fan.
Mephistoau:epic!
gdlr:has potential to be epic
Chiko:fun sketch page:)
Mark Tarrisse:jeeeeaaaaaaarrrrrrrr haaarrrrrr i like the eye patch. his hand looks a bit small though. i like the rendering youve done so far, keep it up :)
Feil Magnus:now thats some high contrast! nice use of space. you have a tangent with the pirates head and the rope. i would move one or the other so they either over lap or dont touch at all.
Obliviongrin:very illustrative. nice dynamic pose.
Jasper_:i have always been a fan of your rendering skillz since i've been able to view your work here on this forum. im really liking the color theory youve got going on. not sure if it says pirate but im sure if it plundered it would be successful. :)
jac-k:im excited to see this finished. the bubble gum is cute but the sneer is perfect.
Sidharth Chaturvedi: nice pencil work. i feel like shes saying "Jarrrr"
klesk33: solid grey scale image. check the rim lighting from the jet pack. i love the mech jet pack. its like if black beard stumbled accross a wolrd of gundam....big fan, excited for the finish.
Refschaufscheik:I like the vibrance of this piece.
Seithe:thats a fun transparent blue thing you got going on
RB2610:keep up the hard work. you have some nice diagonals in this piece with a good story behind the figures.
buffichar:interesting start.
danlambert:nice lighting, its like jack sparrow with dignity :P the bird is nice but it doesnt really scream sky pirate. but it does scream pirate captin.
zephrene:good start, keep it up
Arthur 'Two Sheds': so strange and wonderful this is
Allstar87:nice perspective idea. GIANT CANNONS RULE!
matt kohr:this is loos but has great potential
rumpenstiltzkin:nice pose, unique design. im a fan
mcotie:dude 3/4 of the body or it wont make it! i love this piece as a drawing but it doesnt say 'sky' pirate. maybe if you zoom out, add some air and some legs or something, i would totally vote for this.
Auspiciouspanda:He is the Vikking sky pirate captin and you will take his lightning boltz of fury to your face! so yeah i likes a lot lot lot:p
dawnusllaw:interesting concept. there seems to be a lot of empty space around her.
PMaz:interesting concept. i like jet packs, have i said already? i like the feel of your concept page.
jrbarker:fun style. i like the second one better.
K-Mo:awesome sauce! i love it. well done.
madhatter106:thats fun. she looks a bit off balance. if you had her leaning on something that might help.
delightful_piffle: doesnt really scream 'sky' pirate but i love what you are doing with the atmosphere.
Astrobiology:Im liking the wings, reminds of those flyers from Flash Gordon.
Malakuko:There is something odd about the front right leg. everything else is coming together nicely.
Frozensceptre:zorro esque but it works.
Kryssow:i like the multi colored line work. nice idea. looking forward to seeing the finish.
cantplayglass:any girl who can rock a cigar is awesome in my book.
ricpolisel:beautiful face, nice pose.
heavy liquid:very unique idea.
HolyMane: awesome idea. something to think about. i would look at the top air balloon, i would make it have it rising in the same angle as the other. or i would level both out and keep the dynamic movement of the captin rising to the front of the fleet.
Quike Garcia:beautiful development sheet. im loving the gun blade the single pilot bomber. this is great. when you finish this ImaginFX takes submissions of concept pages. clean this up a bit and submit it! :)
R0oK:that is a baaaadddd man. nice rim lighting.
IVIATT:thats just dirty :) great line work.
kayness:its coming to gether. nice use of color. the front hand looks a little big, or the back hand looks a bit small. it might be the perspective but i do not know.
Veshkau:im a fan. jet packs rule
Liffey:I like the pose and i know its still an early sketch so im excited to see how it progresses. nice graphic skull crown!
Lodin:I am loving the progression. the emotion you have in his face is very warrior esque.

CrookedHorn Hey man thanks for the comment. I decided to take a far leap from traditional 'sea' pirate with my entry, maybe a bit too far though? Glad you like my work too, I haven't seen any of your stuff, but that sketch you posted is awesome. I like everything about it and would love to see it finished, even if not by the contest deadline. Great work taking the time for all those crits as well.
HolyMane I like your lines man, and the idea of a non-human pirate!
Lodin The scene you set up looks great! Very telling about his character.

Some awesome stuff cropping up, guys!
lodin - that looks awesome!
sidharth - Shame! That looks like it's going to be really great by the time you're finished.
crookedhorn - Sweet design! I agree about the glasses. Citan from Xenogears is a good example of getting creative with spectacles without making huge over the top goggles: example (http://mimg.ugo.com/200801/14434/cuts/citan-uzuki_288x288.jpg).
malakuko - that's some heavy rendering, man. Can't imagine how much time it's taken up this week, and you haven't even gotten to coloring! Best of luck. :yayca:
