Illustrator Francis Vallejo takes the viewer on a journey into inks and their exciting possibilities!

You will be able to watch Francis use one reference photo and interpret it 3 times, each time
using a different inking technique: nib, brush, and wash. He discusses the positives and negatives of each
tool and ultimately the benefit of using all three for a successful inked image. Along the way Francis shares
his thoughts on how to properly use reference images, being confident in your drawings, and a bit of
commentary on his favorite inkers and how to use your influences to better your work and make it as unique
as possible. Finally, Vallejo takes the last drawing and brings it into Photoshop to demonstrate a
quick and efficient way to bring your inks into color.

Enjoy!

BIO: I was raised on the Eastside of Detroit, Michigan - a peculiar but influential city in my development. I moved to Sarasota, Florida to study at the Ringling College of Art + Design. I began studying computer animation, but found myself in illustration. Additional instruction was had while attending two sessions of the exceptional Illustration Academy.

I am currently based in Austin, TX. My studio is also home to one of The Art Department's physical locations. Along with my own projects, I assist in the operation of this studio/classroom. I listen to a lot of hip-hop and wear my hat at a slight angle.

cool.. I found francis's website a long time ago but didn't know much about him. Seems like it'll be a pretty cool video. I like his painting style, haven't really seen alot of his ink work, should be interesting.

Can we also get that Shawn Barber released soon? I'm entering my last semester and I'd really like to view that before I create some work for the senior show... its been months now. i'm bursting with anticipation!

Aww man Francis is a beast. I've learned so much from him here at the TAD workshop in KC, not only about art but about business as well. He is a very talented artist and one of the smartest young artists that I know. Props to Mr. Vallejo.

Francis has a great passion and interest in what he does and he is very good at speaking his thoughts and digging into the foundations which underlie the style. He has a big heart and isn't afraid to share what he has learned. The man has an incredible style and watching him do one of these demos live was to say the least, fantastic.

Francis delivers:)

Francis congrats man good to see a familiar name on the site. I thought you were leaving for Russia? Oh well have fun at CA. Your a really good addition to the CA team, Wish I had bought some originals at your going away sale. Make sure to set the record straight with the whole CA trash talking Ringling thing too. I wouldn't have picked anybody else to represent. "Were do you think all these concept art knuckleheads went to school?"- Thiel
Demo looks great man!

I'm kinda shocked no ones answered the few times people have asked how long the video is, and as a result I kinda had to just make this purchase blind.

The video is split up into 4 parts, 2 on nibs, 1 on brush, 1 on wash.

The nibs constitute about 46 minutes (24 for part a and 22 for part b)

the brush video is just over 24 minutes as well

and the finally the wash video compromises a handsome 32 minutes

So you're paying for about 102 minutes of film. There ya go

Nickelhead: Thanks for the comment. I agree you can't have enough Shawn Barber info! Hope you enjoy the video.

Ninjac: Thanks! I thoroughly enjoyed my time in KC and hope to contribute best I can!

Yuza aka Jussi: Thanks man! It was a pleasure to meet! Stay in touch and best of luck on your projects!

drd: Thank you, I hope you enjoy the video!

Yinteck: We are preparing the preview

Angel Intheuk: Cheers! It will be available for as long as the downloads are available. Many have been available to download since this program began a year or 2 ago.

Imaginary: Hope you enjoy!

Bizerk: Thanks! Russia is delayed, but I am enjoying my current projects and involvement with CA.org/TAD greatly!

Jason: Thanks, looking forward to the monster Austin POD!

Kenny Callicutt: Thanks man

Soul Karl: Thanks for clearing that up. It is indeed 102 minutes aka 1 hour and 42 minutes. Cheers!

DinoZord: Happy to hear, thanks!

John English: Thanks John! It's been an honor to be involved with the program!

Scooter: Thanks man, stoked to be in Austin!

A post on Massive Black DVD/Downloads (http://media.massiveblack.com/downloads.html) is on the way with preview imagery and the like. But until then check out my Behance post for a few preview shots: http://www.behance.net/gallery/Demo-Video-with-CA_orgTAD/561469

Like I mentioned in my responses the video is 102 minutes. Thanks Soul Karl.

I have to say it was a huge honor to be included in the lineup of incredible artists that have previously shot demos and to be in the company of my heroes. I remember when I first posted my work on the site 3 years ago while I was a computer animator at Ringling. Coro left me a positive comment which I swiftly screen capped and emailed to all my friends and family. Now to be up top in some capacity with all these folks....wow!!!!!!!!

So from the bottom of my heart, I hope you guys enjoy the video and hopefully positive things are learned!!

Also, if you like, I encourage anyone to post their ink work in this thread. I'll be checking it regularly and am happy to offer any crit or advice that may help the pieces.

take care,
-francis

Francis is my boy! This video is really helpful. Not only does Francis do three versions of the image with different approaches, but he explains what they're good at and why. Francis also drops some serious knowledge in terms of who else you can look at to get inspired about your inking. I've only watched this through once so far, but I'm sure I'll be coming back to it in the future.

This is a dope video that is worth every cent.

I downloaded the tutorial a while ago and learned a ton. Then I watched it again and ended up with the whole family in the room watching the ink demo. Thanks to Francis and CA for putting it together. I feel like it helped me a lot. Here are some of the pieces I have done recently. If you have a chance, Id love to take you up on the offer of crit and advice! Thanks again!

Civilmouse, I'm a newbie here, but had to say that your ink drawings are intense. Most impressive and I hope to be able to do something nearly as good myself some day.

Civilmouse: Nice work! When you're inking a good place to start dropping in shadows is if you imagine the cast shadows from a light shining from above. So under the nose, the neck, under a breast....anything that is sticks out from the body and casts an obvious shadow. Nail these shadows and the piece will really pop. Then black in objects that are actually black....a shirt, pants etc. If you do this your subject is almost done. That's a good place to start. You can change up the light source and play with losing edges in the background, but if you consider spotting cast shadows and locally black shapes, you will be halfway to victory. You should try wood engraving or linocut, your inks have that feel.

Keep drawing, that's the best advice I can give :) Also take portrait reference of yourself looking straight ahead under various lighting situation and ink the same head but with different lighting. Do that over and over and you will begin to recognize "default" shadow shapes you can exploit in future images.

keep rocking,
-fv
