So... I made this list today but also I was just thinking how much I fucking worship good drummers. For me, drums basically make a band. Maybe it's just the energy and "primal" aspect of it, but it's normally a drummer that I am most impressed with at a gig. I really wish I could play drums, actually. So, who are your favorite drummers? Share some clips, even. Mine are:

The dude from DSO, Tomas Haake, Martin Lopez, Bill Bruford, Morgan Ågren, Danny Carey, Gavin Harrison, Thomas Pridgen, Christian Vander, Jaki Leibezeit, Carl Palmer, Dave Turncrantz, Phil Collins, Zach Hill, John Stanier, Sean Reinert, Mark Heron, John Bonham,Tatsuya Yoshida, Mike Giles, John Weathers, Brann Dailor, Bill Ward, Keith Moon, Jason Roeder, Carter Beauford, Giancarlo Golzi, Furio Chirico, and EVERY drummer that's been with Zappa. ;) Also every drummer that's ever been in King Crimson, come to think of it... :P

And yeah... Peart, Portnoy, and Starr are on most people's lists, but not mine. I think they're all overrated, albeit good drummers.

And I'm missing a bunch, probably.

p.s. Post some more obscure/underrated ones... But discussion of the major players is cool, too.

I agree that drums are probably the most important part of a band, but for some reason I can't think of many drummers just now. The only ones that I can remember just now are

the gorilla from the Cadbury advert

Nicko McBrain of Iron Maiden

and Eric Singer of KISS (though the video is from an Alice Cooper tour)

Agreed. The drummer is the backbone to me, makes it or breaks it. I picked up an electric kit a couple years ago after getting the basics down from playing Rock Band. Drums = fun. And awesome stress relief! Some favs...

Nick Menza. Funny looking back, I was 10 when this came out and worshiped Megadeth. Mostly because of Nick's drumming. I couldn't count how many times I drew Vic or that logo. Good times.

KJ Sawka. This guy is insane.

He has the perfect blend of groove, feel, and technicality!

Some drummers that were rudely excluded from my list were Phil Selway, Yasunori Takada, and Hellhammer.

I'm a guitar man. For me, drums are usually part of the background of a band. I'm glad they're there doing their job, but I usually don't really notice them or pay that much attention to them. I don't even know the drummer's name in most of the bands that I listen to.
So, my favorite drummers are those that actually do something to catch my attention, to make me take notice and think "ooh, that's nice."

So, though he doesn't have the blinding technical skills of most of the drummers posted here, and Jake considers him overrated, one of my favorite drummers is Ringo Starr. The beats below don't have the jaw-dropping quality of the videos above, but they catch my interest.

The section starting at 1:16 in "Something" has one of my favorite drum beats.

And I absolutely love Bill Ward.

I could use some hep from you guys. Me and my friends have been trying to devise a super group of musicians that have cheating death. Lemmy would be on base, Kieth Richards on lead guitar, Amy Winehouse on back up vocals and Iggy Pop on LSD. But we keep drawing a blank on notoriously talented drummers that just won't die or sober up.

Well Yoshiki posted above has a neck injury that forced him to wear a neck support thing, and went through surgery last year that made him loose all feeling in his hands... and still keeps drumming. Don't know if that counts :P

along the same lines of what tobbA mentioned, Rick Allen of Def Leppard had his arm amputated after a car crash but continued as a drummer for them.

ken owen of carcass...he was in a coma for 10 months and doctors didn't believe he'd ever be able to walk again, let alone play drums.
in general i wanted to suggest him, because while i don't know how particularly impressive he is technically,he is spot-on in every song from the band. which actually impresses me more in some cases,as it's extremely slow. and once you've gotten used to all the complicated drumming in metal...well. it's strange.
