ROUND #202:: The Ultimate World Tournament Fighter

DESCRIPTION

The Ultimate World Tournament Fighter!

This week, you will design a character for a fighting game:

The world’s toughest fighters from all ages and all over the world are
gathered to challenge each other in the Ultimate World Tournament! Who
will come out on top?

Design a fighter based on a culture or country. He/she can be from any
period in time.

-This is a videogame character so feel free to exaggerate: think of a good
silhouette! Make your fighter stand out and recognizable!
-Design a good weapon/fighting style. Again, it can be inspired by all ages.
-Give your character a fitting name!

Who will win this ultimate challenge? Will it be Jimmy James, the American
Cowboy hero? Or Yuki, the Harajuku ninja? Maybe Sir Roy, Knight of
England? It’s up to you to design the best fighter!

Some inspiring ref:

I'm thinking something a little like this.

1003573

In the late 1940's, Jerome T. Hawkins was a young American man suffering from severely debilitating and unsightly birth defects, leaving him with a misshapen head, stumps for feet, and an atrophied hand. He had it tough from the beginning, and found solace in pulling the wings off of flies with his good hand, and plotting revenge. Dark, morbid revenge.

After persuading his 6th carer to commit suicide with his manipulative words and twisted thoughts, he was locked up in a ward for the criminally insane. Without a body to back up his brain, he was all but helpless.

That is, until, he was put into solitary for convincing a young female nurse that she needed to reduce her wrists to ribbons for looking at him with distaste and judgement (such were his powers of persuasion).

Solitary was, in this case, an old boiler room-cum-storage closet, and in it were all the makings of a mind-control device. An old wheelchair, a set of modified 2-way headphones, a few simple inputs on the makeshift joystick and console, and he would have his subject at his complete and utter disposal. He bid his time until the biggest and meanest brute of an orderly came to do "obs", and within seconds the man was under his control.

Breaking from the ward, Hawkins made straight for the darkest and most depraved streets and neighbourhoods the city could offer him. With the help of black market surgeons, and a bit of persuasive talk, Hawkins found himself tinkering about inside his ward's skull, making numerous tweaks and adjustments and improved response time significantly - reducing lag to nothing, tuning host with parasite perfectly.

He was soon introduced to the underground fight clubs, which in turn led to his discovery of his ability to easily dispatch any opponent without as much as a scratch on his own deformed body. This made him a powerful adversary, because as soon as his brain melded with another's brawn, there was very little that could stop either of them.

will most likely change a lot about the design, but unlike #201 I've started straight away ;)

Stoph : I really like your draw. Your ease with line is impresssve.

My wip (very less poétic :p) Concept : a warrior with a living armor technology/symbiotic who took the time to "grow" with survivor exceptional. The fusion of core technology and core living have created a beast with the intuition of a man and the reflexes of a machine without latency.

Please all Google some Bengus or Akiman images. Those guys did a lot of Street Fighter and Darkstalkers designs and next to the fact that they're awesome designs they're also 'videogame' designs. Iconic, full of character with a really strong silhouette. :)

EDIT: Here are my first thumbs. For years I've been missing some kind of voodoo priestess character in a Capcom fighter so that's gonna be my take. I'm starting from a silhouette to get that right first and then get some design issues worked out. The bones behind the head, the pouches with potion to distract the opponent and the magic voodoo-skull/orb as a projectile weapon. :p Lot of things to cover and more to exaggerate as well, but here's a start. This is gonna be an awesome round :D

EDIT2: Here's a rough paint of the character. Having fun :)

Pixel I like that!! Nice powerful 'look at my groin' female stance!! LOVE IT!! Although not sure how she is balancing in that position with her heels up instead of flat on the floor? Loving the facepaint too.

Could this ultimate fighter be a famous warrior from history or legend?

This is an absolutely fantastic theme. So many possibilities!!

Stinger - I think the pose works really well for the theme, and I love the way you're emphasizing different parts of the anatomy. As for the hair... well I like wacky hair, so I'm probably diggin the first style.

Lodin - love the energy and action you've got going. eye flows through the composition very smoothly, and I think the fact that you've included his opposition will strengthen the illustration quite a bit. awesome so far!

ArtByManon: Thx! And yeah, you're right. Balance looked a bit shoddy. So I redrew the pose in a different angle to make her look a bit more grounded. Still have to work out some design issues, but this is a better foundation methinks :)

Cool, muuuuch better. I liked the other angle, but it was only that she was on her tiptoes that the balance looked a bit wibbly.

Anyone know if i can reimagine a famous character from history, or do we have to make up a new one?

I think you'll have to go for a new one, but you can take cues from historical figures of course. Look at the most iconic fighting-game characters, they're all in a way derived from some historical figure or time period, or culture and then blown up for cliche purposes :p

Nice topic! definitely gonna bust out the Capcom treatment for this round :) I'm gonna do one based on my ancestors, the Maaori warriors. His name is Tuu, he is named after "Tuumatauenga" the Maaori pantheon god of war, bloodlust and bravery much like Ares in the Greek god pantheon.

Jase I reckon yours and my characters might have a good old fistycuffs! (my grandad was born in NZ, still havn't been myself, but can't wait to go).

My character is based on Beowulf - who was fabled to stand 'head and shoulders above other men' with a steel like grip and adept at tearing large ogre type creatures arms off, as well as fighting dragons. So my dude is around 7ft tall and his special skill will be 'disarming' his opponents. Not sure yet whether I'll give him a sword or anything like that - I think I want to stick to good old fashioned brawling. I'm going to stick some cool Viking style tattoo's on him too I think.

Loving all the entries so far, especially these three:

Marak24. Absolutely loving the concept. I'd only try to show the creature as more humanoid, right now it's a bit difficult to appreciate that it's actually one fighter and not a group.

Rusty. Excellent feeling. I would put stronger legs. A bit of exaggeration is fine, though.

Artbymanon. Good one. Can't wait to see it progressing.

Great idea and pose, IVIATT! He looks sort of future/ninja to me, so I think of desaturated dark blues and reds, some greys, etc. That's what comes to mind regarding colors, anyway. Like a mix of Ninja/solid snake from metal gear solid and Strider from marvel vs capcom.

This is a street fighter from the 19th century London.

IVIATT - great linework.

Taibox - great linework as well - though I must say that with your character wearing both suspenders and a belt - not very 19th century. (I studied costumes.) And is it supposed to be a bowler hat? It's looking very "pith helmet" right now...

For you guys doing lots of quick thumbs, these little sketches are just as vibrant as the more progressed work. This is a CHOW where a lot of it will come down to body type and pose - a good fighting stance will help sell the idea so much!

My fighter receiving a gift from a young well-wisher before the tournament.

Arthur, you might reconsider your choice of character since there already is a Mexican wrestler type of character in for instance Street Fighter IV, then again you could give it your own little spin of course. :)

http://ggames.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/el_fuerte_stand_smaller_jpg1.jpg

That said, I urge everyone to do some research into the whole fighting game genre character-wise (especially the old-school 2D ones) and see what already has been done or just to shop around for inspiration. :)

edit, some titles:

Street Fighter 2,3,4 and Alpha/Zero
Samurai Shodown 1, 2 and 3
King Of Fighters 1998
Fatal Fury 3 and Mark Of The Wolves
X-Men: Children Of The Atom (yes, Marvel characters but it's good character design in combination with fighting styles anyway)
Marvel vs Capcom 2
Eternal Champions
Darkstalkers
Art of Fighting
Guilty Gear
BlazBlue

I'm pretty much ignoring all 3d-fighters at this point but that's a: a matter of taste but b: the limits of 2d are a prime example of how to create some really iconic designs which also work in a game.

Hey, posting my sketch for the topic. Really love the idea and love the variety of characters that can come from this. This guys is called Ty Foon, a.k.a. DJ Foon, internationally known d.j., mixed martial artist, parkour street runner, hip hop artist, and action movie star. He's a cocky guy who loves the media attention and the ladies that follow. I want to make him seem like a complete sell out type character with a HUGE ego, so I was gonna have a bunch of different logo's from companies on his jacket, so when he fights he's also advertising. Anyways, critiques would be nice and hope to see some more kick ass stuff from everyone. Cheers!

You can use Roman gods as inspiration, but try to make it into your own character. Your "culture" would be Classical Roman I guess!

This may sound like a bit of a silly question---Does it have to be inspired by one culture or can it be a fusion of many?

Not silly at all :) Take one culture - see it as if your fighter represents his country/culture in the tournament. It would be confusing if he represented more than one :)

Wow there really starting to be some good stuff popping up around around here and What are the odds that somebody else would do a Maori warrior too lol. For mine I wanted to do a staff fighting style character, but I wanted to definitely stay from the asian culture and I had remembered that the Maori were really good at staff fighting when I was doing my thumbnails and it ultimately turned into a Maori warrior plus the Mogos and body tattoos were a really offered some really awsome ideas for me.

So my character is Hunapo a Maori warrior tattoed in demons blood that grants him superior strength and agility..

I started out with some thumbnails, playing around with just some various shapes and things. For a while I was working on a female pirate idea, and a kind of cannibal savage dude with an executioners mask made of human skin. When I started doing some quick face sketches I liked the idea of of a kind of mask and thats when the connection of the Maori warriors and the face tattos came to me. I did some research and began developing the concept.

http://i673.photobucket.com/albums/vv97/mjhanisch/Thumbnails1.jpg

http://i673.photobucket.com/albums/vv97/mjhanisch/LadyThumbs.jpg

In my first pose I wanted to show alot of the body to have an open canvas to show off the various body tattoos, I went through a couple of iterations on this pose but then recieved some feedback that it felt a little to much like a shaman rather than a warrior like I had wanted so I went back to the drawing board.
http://i673.photobucket.com/albums/vv97/mjhanisch/Hunapo02.jpg

http://i673.photobucket.com/albums/vv97/mjhanisch/Hunapo01.jpg

This next sketch was an idea a friend of mine gave me about making the tattoos a living weapon that actually ripped off the body and attacked the opponents. The idea was an awsome out but it had a little too much of the supernatural elements to it and got away from my original goal of a staff fighter that wasn't a monk.
http://i673.photobucket.com/albums/vv97/mjhanisch/Tattoo_test.jpg

I revisited the pose that I had done originally and changed it to where he is in more of a warriors stance with feet firmly planted on the ground I havent really decided on the face yet but it's something I'm going to be trying to figure out while painting.

after some googling i got into african tribes, and got inspired! so i think im going with that :)
none of these poses are set, still sketching on some good silhouettes.

rumpenstiltzkin-Great ideas im really diggin the nun though we need more chicks in this tourny turning into a dudefest :P but overall great ideas cant wait to see more

Something_Abysmal-hey man love the Maori warriors personally i really like the idea of the tattos as wepons but the direction your taking it in seems just as cool keep it up!

PlaidKlaus-Im gana agree with pixeltuner he looks verry much like Dalsim maybe give his tattos a glow to them? and maybe more skulls for a costume? A good way would be looking at some witchdoctor photos. Love the colors though

ArtByManon-Hey love the idea you could try some celtic knot tattos and stuff for him as well and what about the idea of the arm itself as a weapon

Rusty-really like the look to him to me he looks like an actual character you could play in streetfighter cant wait to see him finished!

Zarquino- good idea keep working on it

thegrayslayer-to bad but a great character anyways hope you find time to complete this chow

marak24-Really love the concept behind this one one thing you could try is have the center guy holding onto the others with his hands swinging them like they were his own?

Felix105-Great idea to me though he needs to be MORE flashy, his hands are a tad bit small i think and try raising his shoulders up just slightly but overall keep at it

pacha-i like the muslim idea could maybe give him like a Genie/Jin type of look to him

Quinn Simoes- Awesome man really loving the design to this guy hope to see more!

Arthur 'Two Sheds'-Pretty sweet fighter cant wait to see more

leckronium- Cool idea you could try having the hat at his feet with tricks coming out of it while having the wand in hand

staticpen-Like the idea of this character but just kinda seems a little tomuch like nightmare off of soulcaliber

Taibox- Really like this guy but i think a baseball bat would look good as well

GweNdZ-Really cool idea keep up with it

IVIATT-really diggin this guy

Henchman 21- Love this! really hope to see him finished

Abrodos- Good idea keep up with it id say just experiment a little more with the clothing design a bit maybe make him look a bit more mean

Aneru- great ideas cant wait to see more

fdisk-reminds me a bit of Birdie from streetfighter really like it

matt kohr-Wow really cool design cant wait to see what finished product looks like

humboldt squid-really good idea cant wait to see more of him and how he poped the togas collar

Homerid-THat is exactly what a fighting game needs a bad ass vinking keep it up man

ChileanIggy-great design man keep at it

Pixeltuner-great idea kinda reminds me of a chick version of Daslim, really like the shrunken head idea

Stinger88-like the crazy hair kind makes me think amazon crazy bitch

Lodin- Awsome looks like a bad ass character hope to see him finished

stoph-love this guy really cant wait to see what this guy will look like finished.

@rumpelstilzkin - I gotta say, there's a lot of african/tribal type designs going on here, so unless you're set on something you love, I might choose the nun - it's much more original. You also get that "fighter whom you wouldn't expect" angle ala B.B.Hood in Darkstalkers.

@undeadartist - Thanks man. You're probably right, so I'm going to flip some things around and see what happens. Thanks for calling that out.

Well I got a start on the painting today before having to go to work I found some reference for the hair that I thought was pretty cool as well as changed the stave to a spear, as it feels a more appropriate weapon for a bad ass Maori Warrior and all. , Not alot of detail put down yet, just some base tones and such. I am trying to keep my pallette in the red hues as well the colors bright. I actually had a start and ended starting over about 2 hours in, paintings my weakest skill so I'm hoping to really have alot more developed on it by tomorrow. Hopefully I will have more to show for my efforts than I did today.

This should be my entry.
I'm thinking about adding a portrait after like with the 3rd strike character Art.
I was working on one but started over as i seriously did not like the direction it was taking. So i'm taking more time and care this time round.

This site has character art for loads of games including fighting games such as:

Guilty Gear

Of which the art I adore.

Nice structure, MadGorilla. :D

Moving forward with ideas for the details. This sword folds into itself, hence the short scabbard. I figure this guy will be from Persia or something, so I looked up their flag and saw a bunch of stuff with a lion with a shining sun behind it, which sparked the idea of the windmill-looking thing on his back to enhance the silhouette.

Jamesy, I know the armor is Mongol style, but for me this guy is not reading Asian at all... I'd look at some references of Mongolian or Asian men to get the facial features. I've lived in China for 2 years and I've yet to see a man capable of growing that kind of thick, brushy facial hair. Also watch the perspective, or maybe the angle, of that shield.

Really good stuff so far everyone! Some very cool fighter designs indeed, can't wait to see how things progress from here!

I'm getting in on this a little late, so hopefully I can pull something together by Sunday is it? Here's a little sketchity-sketch of what I plan to work with, and a bit of background info ala mid 90s arcade fighters...

Name:Renier "Ren" LeSaboteur
Age: 26
Origin: Corsica, France
Fighting Style: Savate-Capoeira Fusion

Renier LeSaboteur was born on the island of Corsica off the coast of France to a poor fisherman and his wife. When Ren was 4, a sudden and violent storm wrecked the fishing boat he and his family were on - leaving him an orphan. Unhappy being raised in an orphanage, Ren escaped to the streets surviving by stealing food and sleeping in deserted ally ways. One fateful night, Ren came upon a group of traveling street performers passing through the town and noticed they had seemingly left their supply trailer un-guarded. Ren made his way over to the supply trailer to steal a couple of loaves of bread, but he was caught by the troupe leader who at that moment was going to fetch some moonshine from the very same trailer. Ren immediately took a swing at the old man, but was quickly dispatched with little effort. Ren, humiliated and on the ground was surprised at what happened next - the old man smirked, reached out his hand and invited him to join him and the rest of the troupe for dinner.

During dinner, Ren had explained to the troupe that he was an orphan, and that he had run away from the orphanage. After dinner, the troupe leader told Ren that he was more than welcome to join their troupe if he wished. Has he grew, Ren not only mastered all aspects of performance arts from his new family - but also their unique style of martial arts, and the art of the con. For you see, these were no ordinary street performers - they were also a band of thieves and grifters. Unfortunately for Ren, it was because of this that his new found family also had it's share of enemies.

While passing between towns, Ren and the troupe were ambushed by a band of mercenaries no doubt sent by one of the many nobles who the troupe had conned in some way. The attack was as sudden as it was brutal, within minutes Ren was the only one left and found himself escaping through the woods. Alone once again, with his new family taken from him - Ren looked back one more time and spotted the lead mercenary - knowing he would not survive a head on fight with him and his men, Ren swore revenge on his attacker before fading into the shadows.

No longer safe in Corsica, Ren travels throughout Europe and the far-east surviving by his skills as an entertainer, fighter, and a con artist. All the while searching for any leads that he can on the mercenary that led the cowardly attack on his family...

Name: Lan Joe
Birthplace: Xinjiang, China
Age: 34
Bio: As a young boy, Lan Joe's family moved from there rural village in Northwestern China to Shanghai to open a Lanzhou La Mian noodle shop. Unlike other boys his age, Lan Joe did not attend school, instead working in his fathers shop learning the art of noodle making. During the late, slow hours of the night shift, Lan Joe pasted his time watching kung fu films on the small TV hung on the wall, and dreamed on one day becoming a great kung fu master. He began copying the kung fu styles he saw in the films and began incorporating them into his noodle making techniques, and soon became known throughout the city for his unique style of noodle preparation.

NOW a rich and greedy developer wants to tear down his family's noodle shop to build an apartment complex. With no where to go and his family's livelihood and future in the balance, its time for Lan Joe to put his fighting skills to the test. He will stop the developer no matter what the cost, no matter who or what stands in his way! BUT FIRST, as a way to prove to himself he is ready for the long fight ahead, he signs up to fight in The Ultimate World Tournament. Armed with only his noodle making equipment, his kung fu skills and a sachet of noodle dough, he knows if he can win the tournament, then nothing can stop him from saving the noodle shop!

BTW: For those of you who have never been to China or are not familiar with La Mien, do a youtube search for "Lanzhou La Mian" and you should be able to find a video of one of these guys. Its pretty cool to watch them making noodles. In this image, the long sweeping lines are in fact noodles which he uses as a weapon, but it makes alot more sense if you understand how they make them.

Considering completely redoing the dismembered arm too, it doesn't look heavy, nor is it hanging right. Think I might ditch it.

I was in a hurry to try out those funky Capcom color palettes. Still pretty messy but i'll clean it up once i've calmed down, also chopped and changed proportions a little while keeping with that Capcom flavor.

Something_Abysmal I can see why you'd confuse a Taiaha with a spear, heh! but it's not, it's more like a bo staff with 2 differently shaped nasty ends, long flat-shaped blade end is for striking, pointy end for jabbing when in close and feathers act as a confusion device to the enemy, deadly and beautifully carved piece of kit :) ...real ones i mean not that souvenir crap

Mr.Delicious That's rockin man! lovin it!

Yeti Ball Anatomy isn't bad at all, it's in the Capcom vein but the clothing wrinkles and folds aren't holding up as well, also hold back on the thick ass lines for now draw the whole image in a uniform thickness first then go back over and methodically pop out areas, see if that makes a diff.

ArtByManon You drew no manhood on him watch you expect! ;) light source isn't too bad you got the right idea maybe once you clothe him up it might start taking shape. How about putting the arm over his shoulder? just an idea.

Once a fierce assassin of The Black Desert Guards, now a nomad wonderer and thief through the Arabian Impire, Al-Lesath is known for his fast and surprisingly attacks that overcome his opponents. He doesn't fight for honor but for fame and wealth, that is why he uses every trick in his sleaves to bring down his opponents. From ranged attacks to melee attacks he uses a large variety of weapons to compensate his lack of armor, longbows, polearms, throwing knives and his poison coated scimtar are his primary death bringers but rummors say that he sometimes uses the mystical art of the Dark Spiting Cobra. He now joined The Ultimate World Tournament...you better watch out for him!

ArtByManon - I think if there were to be a problem with the light anywhere, it might be his abdomen and left pectoral. I think they are more turned away from the light source than they seem. But it's pretty minor. As for the arm he is carrying, the shoulder idea is good, but I thought if that didn't work you could also try making the object longer so that it drags on the ground. And I think his hand would not look like that unless he was holding onto a thinner area, like the wrist.

I have a habit (bad habit maybe) of always using very heavy lines. Right now I'm drawing in Sketchbook Pro, I'm thinking of maybe trying different software next time. The CEOs of the Ultimate World Tournament Fighter, saw a opportunity to assure themselves they had a fighter that could win and take profit from it. So they hired a scientist who was studying reanimation of dead tissue. What ever the doctors original plans were changed the day the founders of the tournament came to his doorstep. They paid him a substantial amount to create for them an ultimate fighting creature that could feel no pain and no remorse. After the experiment Stitch was "born" with a mind that knows only fight, he was entered into the Tournament. The CEOs of the tournament couldn't be happier with this abomination or their stocks.

ArtByManon - The facial structure is definitely there but his face looks a little...expressionless? I mean he just ripped some monster's arm off, I'd think he'd be grinning maniacally or something you know? His jawline might also be going back too far, making his head longer than it should be. I liked it better off the shoulder and dangling. Also, when holding a dismembered arm, you probably wouldn't hold it on the forearm. Too thick and uncomfortable. I'd hold it from the wrist. Why do I know so much about dismembered arms? I don't know. Good job so far though!

Oh my god why did I want to paint so many figures this is going to be the death of me

Here's an update on my concept, and some crits:

Rusty: This piece is developing really good Loving the colours. Be careful with the composition: Right now, the shoulder has more or less the same importance as the head. That creates a weird stiff, straight line from the head highlights to the shoulder and arm ones.

Undeadartist: Cool concept. Try to depict the reflections from the blue lights in the body, and do it by using not just the local colour but also a blue hue.

Artbymanon: That change has taken it a step further. I think the problem was that the arm position and muscles didn't show that it was lifting some weight, and that made it look unnatural. Right now it looks much better. Be careful with his right foot perspective, though.

Abrados - you mean my dude's right foot or our right?

Marak - yeah, I think i should do a more cocky and smug face - i'd nto really thought about expression. I'm gonna have to find some ref or get my fella to do some silly faces (not hard). In fact, my fella has big old bony feet which I could use as some ref for this too. And yeah, the jawline does look a bit strange - I'll fiddle with that too.

Here is the first iteration of my Taino Warrior and some backstory.

As the spanish conquistadors began to arrive in the caribbean, and began to devastate the Taino population with sickness, overworking and superior technology, the Tainos in Puerto Rico began to fight a guerrilla war while others would begin the journey to the center of the island and hide in the mountains for generations. Enter Moin-Iro or Blood Spirit. This warrior would become like a ghost to the spanish invaders, kill entire squads and then disappear into the forest. Fighting for vengeance and blood, he would slaughter the spanish just as they slaughtered with no regard man, woman and child. Gone was the kindness and hospitality of this Taino. His people, in return for such honor, were repaid with torture, mutilation, pain and death. And now, he would bring the same destruction to the spanish. However, one day he was betrayed by a fellow Warrior blinded with spanish promises and riches. Ambushed by Tercios one day, they attacked and killed him with great cruelty and no mercy. Now, it would seem a higher power has provided him with a second chance. Win the Ultimate World Tournament, and he would not only regain his soul, but another chance to free his people.

Took some creative liberty with the character. Wearing Taino accessories, hairstyle and markings while also having some spanish equipment taken from his fallen enemies.

Rusty: So Taiaha is the proper name, I knew it was something alot more elaborate than a spear but spear was the closest thing I could relate it to. Werent Maori warriors known to catch spears being thrown at them though too, I remember seeing that somewhere and I am pretty sure it was the Maori.

ArtbyManon I dig the anatomy work on him very epic.

Pixeltuner: I like that pose alot better than the previous one, it seems alot more natural.

Little bummed I spent the whole day painting and accomplished almost nothing, alot of trying things out, deleting and restarting. I hate those days where you feel like your just banging your head against a wall.

First time at this one. This is what I got so far. He's an Australian Aborigine.
I'm not sure why, but when I save and post as a jpg, my contrast and saturation goes all out of whack. It looks a lot better in Photoshop. Any clue why posting it online changes the colors?

jrbarker, its probably because your painting in CYMK mode. When PS displays colors in a CYMK doc, its just an approximation since your screen is RBG. Or at least that what I understand... Make sure your document mode is RBG and see if that help.

Mike D, I think your loosing some details in the armor. Right now its maybe too dark. Also, the guys skin looks really shiny, very polished plastic looking, this might make sense if he were in an action pose and was visibly moving and sweating, but as it it now I think it looks strange.
Also, the armor on his arm doesn't look very flexible, as in now I feel it reads as an metal cast that would hold his arm in that position with no articulation.

Jamesy guy still doesn't really look that Chinese :D ... shield still looks strange at that angle, but otherwise its looking nice.
BTW, are his blue eyes a reference to the theory that Genghis Khan had blue eyes? Blue eyes are very uncommon in Asian people but some people think that Genghis Khan had red hair and blue eyes. I don't know much else about it but I was just wondering if you had heard of this. If not you should just pretend you did cuz it would be a nice touch!

My Japanese fighter is a boy comes from the future.

He uses gloves and boots that once on control Ectodroids. Ectodroids are little flake-like,hexagonal, translucent nano particles that work together to create "virtual" limbs that simulate and amplify the boy's movements. Ectodroids can became solid surfaces by interlocking themselves to one another, generating violent impacts with devastating power. The name Ectodroids comes as a reference to ectoplasm manifestations supposedly created by spirits using body fluids of a human medium.

here's some work I've done. comments very welcome.

tarik and Jager, that's the kinda stuff i was waiting to see! Good to see you two went against the grain and didn't do the typical brute , i was gonna do the same but stuck with something from my own culture and do it a bit of justice!

I was gonna do something close to yours tarik except mine was a kid from the 1980's who time travels hoping prove the might of his Nintendo power glove to the world! Jager Awesome man, i picture him fighting in old school bare-knuckle style, juggling fists in the air, back of the hands facing the opponent and very straight backed, deadly!

ArtByManon heh! my character now has backstory motivation, to retrieve his arm from some random agro Anglo-Saxon dude! Yea it's looking better now but i agree with a earlier comment that there needs to be a subtle suggestion that it is a dismembered arm and not someone leaning on him. Already he's looking different with some bear pants!

Marak24 That's looking ace dude, such a solid feeling to it

Yetiball I use Open Canvas for sketching only use Photoshop CS2 for coloring. Open Canvas brushes feel just right to me for outline drawing (once configured to personal preference that is) and the rotating canvas option feels very analog, even better than Corel Painters imo! It's no match against the others as a total package but for sketching it's perfect.

well done everyone

My Idea was for a neanderthal character thats sort of ape like but mostly human. I only sketched in the bg quickly but I think now maybe it takes too much attention away from the character and also doesnt describe him that well. But again im new to this so I dont know.
I want to show him as being a strong warrior but not necessarily a hero type character, hence the uni-brow :S ha

One of my favorite character was the min dino "Gon" from Teken 3. Of course it was one of the most cheese monkey type character, with simple but powerful moves, and such a short stance that that high attacks almost never hit him. However it was adorable and the character that drew me into the fighting games (aside from games like Primal Rage, and Dark Stalkers).

However I do remember one game of shape shifting fighters. There was a wolf, a rabbit, a bull, a warthog, and others, and this is where this character is inspired from. I'm late to the game as it were, but I am hoping to at least have something /finished/ as I'm terrible with only doing pencil-sketches and quick renders. ;)

SO I went with that idea and am going to try and keep it as human as I can. We'll see how it develops. :)

I figure I'd at least try a base sketch and see if people like the general idea. This guy has a bit of a backstory.

The Dragon of Daylight once belonged to a secret society of monks whose responsibility was to guard the tomb of the malevolent god Neshif-Kormali. In 1974 there was a moderate earthquake which cracked the magical seal that had been placed on the tomb, waking Neshif from his long slumber. The monks tried everything that they could to keep it at bay, but it was no good. Daylight did the unthinkable, he performed a ritual that would bind Neshif to his body and soul. Despite saving the Monastery, his actions were not excused by the Monks. He was exiled, never to return. After this he all but disappeared off the face of the earth, only to reappear again as a professional fighter and brawler. Using his knowledge of martial arts, and the infernal energies of Neshif-Kormali, he is not an opponent to be taken lightly.

Crits please.

I liked the idea of focusing on a time period and crafting a fighter based on that. I decided to go with the 18th century French aristocracy, not exactly a people known for their hand-to-hand badassery. I'm calling him the Marquis du Pain. I hope I have time to color him before the deadline.

Well I actually made progress today, I learned alot through this painting experience, like have a strong drawing before you start painting and dont count on being able to fix it in photoshop. I think I would actually be in a lot better shape had I not rushed to start painting right away. Oh well live in learn.

basti0n
June 25th, 2010, 10:59 PM
something abysmal. the perspective on your spear has some hijinx. along the haft of the spear you are going backwards towards a point in space, then the head of the spear is moving backward to a different point in space. this makes your spear tip appear to curve upward. it should be easy to switch in PS, just redraw the spear tip over the other on a different layer using the spears vanishing point. that way the spear and the blade of the spear are receding in space to the same point.

neways. strong characters coming up so far, i wish i had a better mastery of the figure to engage in something like this.

You can submit more than one image in the finals thread if you want to show some detail or something on your image. Your actaul final piece should be the entire character with your name and chow number on it (you can read the guidelines in the finals thread :) )
