ROUND #201 :: ANDROMEDA
DESCRIPTION
ANDROMEDA
To kick off a fresh new reign of ChoW we dive into greek mythology and this week's topic is: Andromeda, the chained princess.
Story:
Andromeda was the princess of the kingdom of Ethiopia and daughter of Cassiope and Cepheus. One day, Cassiope bragged that she was prettier than the daughters of the seagod Nereus. The Greek Gods did not appreciate this and sent a seamonster to punish the queen for her arrogance. The only way to stop the monster from destroying the kingdom, was to sacrifice beautiful Andromeda. She was chained to a rock in the sea to be devoured by the sea monster...
Find out what happened to Andromeda:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andromeda_(mythology)
http://www.mythindex.com/greek-mythology/A/Andromeda.html
The story of Andromeda inspired many artists throughout the ages:

http://www.wga.hu/art/w/wtewael/perseus.jpg
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1a/Gustave_Dor%C3%A9_Andromeda.jpg
Now it's time she inspires you!
Since you have some more time for this ChoW, you will have to include the seamonster in some way. Feel free to experiment with Andromeda's outfit, style and time period, but keep to the story and include the sea monster.
Good luck!

Andromeda In Space
As a fan of anything sci fi, I took the classic scene/setting of the myth of Andromeda and turned it into a derelict asteroid field in orbit above a moon.

some critics & comments :)
leckronium: on the quick first pass I thought you hadn't included the monster, then scrolled down to the wips and saw it, very cool! just keep in mind that sometimes things are going to be so subtle that they may not be read immediatly, so it has to be done with purpose. This time it totally works for me.
lodin: its a very nice image, very nicely rendered, and while the warm centered light looks good in the image, it doesn't make sense to me, with the rest of the lighting. Maybe adding some other warm highlights would help? Also the front part of the monster (snakelike) doesn't make sense to me with his body, kindda makes me want to see him whole. Still, I like the composition a lot.
Evil comrad: it seems to me that the light is quite inconsitant. She's lightened from the overcast sky, but the monster has some hard shadows on some surfaces facing upwards? I think you're using directly a photo for the water? if you are, you'll learn more if you try doing your own rendering with some abstract shapes, and the pic will be more "yours".
Pinback: Very lovely shapes and composition! I'd like to see more control of the attention, either by rendering certain parts or by better composing the values. I'm just nitpicking, the overall image has a good effect.
staticpen: I saw your linework in the wips thread and it was amazing. Your final is a great image, but I think it looses something, compared to the linework I saw. I like the mood a lot.
fdisk: Its a good idea, but you have the same contrasts all over the image, so its hard to read what is going on. If you pushed the monster and water to a similar dark value, reserving the highlights to the foreground I think it would work better.
posichrvey: I enjoyed very much the mood, and the monster design. I think more rendering on her, especially her face, would help the pic a lot. Her face is the center of attention, give it more love.
rumpenstilzkin: I liked your character design the most, but the composition looks too contrived. I think you could either have a more natural composition, or keep the contrived design but play more with the the abstract shapes that make the image, to help sell the composition.
dashinvaine: Very nice oils! But why do you have them both looking at the relatively boring dark clouds? there's obviously something out of the frame, but you don't give enough clues to sell the storytelling
Rusty: just.... duuuude!!

I voted Carnifex, Pinback, Rusty and Sakuranym, focussing mostly on character design and originality, as opposed to rendering and execution.

Some excellent work this round! Nice new start chaps, but I guess I personally would like to have seen more re-interpretations of the myth. You know... ride above the half naked chick and snake (penis) monster cliché a bit. ;) It would have been cool so see Andromeda kicking a little monster butt herself, or maybe an ironic 'take' on the subject. Turn it into a pulp cover or something... But hey ho...

How very Fruedian, thanks Aly Fell.
Blau, thanks for the comment. I suppose Andromida and Aly's toothsome willy from the deep must be looking up at Perseus, who maybe I should add in with his winged shoes... I did a little more to the painting this morning and the results can be seen on my blog and on DA. No sign of our hero yet though.

Thanks for all the time you spent with that post! I agree with your opinion. At high resolution when you can still see the lines it's a better image, but the thumb doesn't read as well. I'll have to adjust with that in mind for future projects!

I hear what you are saying and I also think it would have been cool to see some re-interpretations; but I usually approach CHOW like it's a character request from a client, and the description specifies she's being sacrificed to the monster. Usually sacrifices don't leave a whole lot of room for fighting back :)

I'm not pointing fingers at anyone specifically Dash, it is merely an observation. But Freudian? Of course it could be seen so, but you don't really need Freud to realise the obviousness of a long snaky monster about to eat a naked woman. It's like a Whitesnake cover! Yes the Andromeda story lends itself to this realisation all to obviously but I guess it is the prerogative of the artist to step outside the box a bit. This is ChoW, so it would be good to see a bit of character development other than the realisation of an archetype, otherwise this becomes a rendering contest.

(...) otherwise this becomes a rendering contest.
I'm afraid it already is, most of the time the most expertly rendered image wins and we as voters are to blame. But that's beating a dead horse I guess, because its a point that has been brought up far to many times already (character design vs illustration and ideas vs execution)
That said, you're right of course. There's more to Andromeda than a (half)naked woman and a snaky monster.

The inclusion of the monster requirement totally threw me. This was my first time doing one of these and I completely lost sight of the CH in ChoW. What I ended up making had zero character design, and was a blatantly Freudian, run-of-the-mill interpretation to boot. But I'm not gonna beat myself up too much: I'll try harder to step outside the box next time.

Glad to know my comments are good for something. When I re-read them, some seem like pointless ramblings...
How very Fruedian, thanks Aly Fell.

I imagined it was the hero they were looking at, but it was more because 'what else could they be looking at?' rather than anything you actually put in the frame. I'm not sure if the winged shoes would be enough, you're pointing the direction of my eyes to that corner rather strongly, whatever you put there would have to be quite interesting.
Thanks for all the time you spent with that post! I agree with your opinion. At high resolution when you can still see the lines it's a better image, but the thumb doesn't read as well. I'll have to adjust with that in mind for future projects!
The image will always be stronger, if it works on the thumb level. And your thumb is very attractive, it just doesn't help much with the figurative storytelling part of the image. This isn't necessarily bad, its still an attractive image, it depends on your purpose.
But what I meant was a bit more variation and purpose in the rendering and values of the shapes.

I think that's what threw most people. CHoW is character based first and foremost, with very little emphasis or importance placed on setting or scene. this challenge called for too many elements - don't get me wrong, I enjoyed doing it! but it definitely needed to be set a with a little more character focussed parameters. only so many options you'll come up with when you get into specifics like "chain her to a rock, have a sea monster coming after her"

I had to go for Sakuranym first, simply because I love style and it focused on the character first. That was the point of this challenge. Second goes to Rusty and Pinback. Great developed styles, respectively. Wonderful images.
