Me and form_n_focus did this on OC. He had to leave though so we didn't get too far. Mine is the troll politician, and form never got to work his out. Neither is finished, but it will have to do for today.

teyekanik - Nice and moody. I wish I could see what he's holding better, though.

Here's mine..finnaly got back to the valuabe lessons of DSG:P
http://www.xs4all.nl/~rfriet/peppo/images/trollofdespair.jpg
Apricotsoup-Devianart doesn't allow direct linking.....I know..it's stupid( it's because so you don't use their fre unlimited space, just as an image sever..not as what they ment it for(but IMHO the people there are a bit too wooptidoo there...no construcitvity an criticism..)). Cool troll, like his eyes. Needs more defnition f from though. (I like lollipops:p)
Railboy-Aaahw..he looks so..happy..nice teeth, and the eyes also look good. Nice color for the skin. But his fingers are looking a bit wonky to me...and the cat looks a bit flat compared to the troll...
Mr Man-It almost looks like the troll is strangling the girl and he gives me the creeps with that tutu....
Beatnik-He looks sad...good job:thumbsup:....but it's a bit hard to figure out the story behind this...why is he e standing inside?..with a flowr?...hmm..and somehow this let's me think of a hobbit:rolleyes:...
today
Nagasch-Nice pose..but maybe a bit background..and an object he is leaning would help with strenghting the pose. The colthing looks Very Rasta-man..but maybe not the pants...I like the smoke an joint;)...
Bluedreamer-Welcome to the DSG!;) hmm..another sad troll...I like the loincloth and grass.:) It looks a bit flat though...perhaps you should add a bit more contrast by picking a light source and add some darker shadows.
teyekanik-Cute:p. I like the affectionatre expression on his face.(althought the baby looks a bit squished..). Cool horns:).
MAybe you should work on it some more..this could be a very cool image:D.
Edit: I know, I know...mine is veeeery sloppy..was a bit lazy

I didn't spend too long on this so it's a bit scribbly and rushed. Though I may do another one if I get enough time - it's a fun topic :)
http://amerasu.randomleft.com/ca/feb25_04_troll.jpg
Morr - That's very cute! I like the simplicity, I think it works well for your pic.
Beatnik - sexy stuff ;) But I think I like your flower troll most.
Phuzion - she's nicely drawn
Carnifex - I'm not sure who that reminds me of but I'm sure she's trollish. Pink?
Mad Giraffe - I like the colours and the mood, and his big stick. Is he sad or shy? I can't tell for sure.
ApricotSoup - *laugh* Love the lollipop idea
Railboy - Your troll is just great, I love his face. The colours too.
Mr Man - Bit small to make out but he's definitely a misunderstood troll
Nagasch - That's great, love the costume!
Bluedreamer - he reminds me a little of Dobby (is that his name?) from Harry Potter, cute
Nagasch - Really like this one for the atmosphere. Though he's quickly drawn, I think you captured the moment. Nice :)
Nagasch - haha! Reminds me of warhammer for some reason. Like his beard.
Tiger_Lily - Awwww, cute!
dfacto - Love the politician, very real to life ;)
schmu_20mol - I like that style, almost abstract.

Ok guys, do u know the definition of troll? It's a scandinavian folklore creatures, you know those ugly things that can live in mountains or under bridges? Like president Bush! Troll is not sexy naked woman with tinted skin and horns like most of you crazy fantasy artists like to draw. I guess that's the definition of FANTASY. It's all in your head. Good drawings guys but can u be a little more "realistic" in the fantasy world and draw trolls the "ugly way" and not "your sexual fantasy way"? Just a little pet peeve of mine. :p

kinokuniya's troll reminds me of Sally from Nightmare Before Xmas more than it does a troll. I have met a troll before but he was really big and eating a volkswagen so I didn't think I'd bother to ask what his women look like.

Well, he is misunderstood by many things. His fellows in his tribe kind of misunderstood him and kicked him out. Then the adventurers misuderstood him and removed his arm. And you cannot forget that bear. Or even the hornets. Oh yeah, that female troll misunderstood his advance too.

Uhm, people, i think you are reacting too much to what I said, it was joshingly u know, thats why I quoted "realistic". I didn't want this to get all woo big ass discussion over it. All I meant was that fantasy artists tend to draw females overly sexy when guys are allowed to be ugly. It's a constant in this male dominated world. Oh and guys: I'm a girl! Shelldragon comes from my name: Michelle. Ya i know there's a troll female in here that isn't super sexy but I was just making a remark in general, not just in this dsg. Ever looked in a fantasy art book? Count the ugly female to sexy female ratio and the ugly male to sexy male ratio. You'll find that because the artists are mostly male they will draw near naked women a lot of the time whenever there is a female present. Kinda objectifies us and makes us as if we don't have brains or that we can only do well if we look good. So there's my two cents, I wasn't freaking out in the first comment I made so I don't know why you people were telling me to chill out. cuz it did just start out jokingly.. then it turned into a discussion.. hahaha yah..

Actually, I agree with shell to a point... although you can draw a troll however you want, and it is completely open-ended depending on where you get your definition of "troll", I persionally have to applaud to people who are willing to not take the "lusty, fantasy chick" route. It's totally okay if they do, but props to those who don't. ;) This is completely my own opinion, but it's just one of those things.. look in any Spectrum book and you have a very large ratio of scantily-clad thong women. It's just a nice change not to have that.

sorry if my post didn't fit under the topic heading - i was just inspired by the other "sexy" female troll so i did my own.
As for shell's point about sexy women - i also agree to an extent, but i wouldn't go so far as to say it's because in this world Driven by men, women are objectified as much as possible. Plus, your statement about what "Men's" intent is in drawing women a certain way, is not only a generalization but also a fallacy. Drawing a women "scantily clad" in no way implies anything about her intellegence, especially in the world of comics. In fact, i find it somewhat offensive that you'd implicitly stereotype me like that without knowing anything about me.
I dont remember seeing any "ugly" looking comic characters in the last 5 comics i read- which included both genders. Either way one of the beauties of Fantasy is that it isn't what we see in real life, it's whatever we imagine, and unless someone finds these scantily clad women or perfectly built men truly and personally offensive, we as artists have the right to draw pretty much whatever we want.

Aw the sexy thing isn't going over too well ay? Heh heh, I'm just in a sexy girl mood right now, so I'm having fun incorporating it into these topics in some way. But, just for the record, I dont' think of women as objects, which is why I kind of make fun of myself in some of these pics. Also, I usually draw a sexy girl that can kick mad ass, with a sort of "hit on me and your dead before you can count to one" attitude, not a "I'm helpless so save me and I'll sleep with you" attitude. So yeah, hopefully, this whole sexy girl thing is just a phase, but you never know!! AAAAAAAHHHH...
As to being a regular, I'm certainly going to try. I use to do this everyday when we only had an hour and a half to do it, and the topic was announced in the IRC chat, and that was a blast... So yeah, I'll try... but school and work keep me pretty busy. Anywho, nice turn out, and nice work everyone! sic8sic, and Hush, really nice moods and well executed. Props. Peace all

February 26th, 2004, 07:08 PM
wow so much attention! You have good points kinokuniya, but i'm really not trying to make this into an argument but you are taking some of the things I said and over generalizing them. What I write are just my opinions and this could get into a huge debate if we wanted.
"i wouldn't go so far as to say it's because in this world Driven by men, women are objectified as much as possible." I didn't say that. I just said "It's a constant in this male dominated world" And you can't disagree with that I think. I also didn't say males objectify women as much as possible. I just mentioned " Kinda objectifies "us. And sure, all the sexy girls here are kickass kinds that don't bow to anyone but like I said before it makes it seem like you can't do succeed or be awesome unless you are sexy.
My commentary comes from my irriation towards objectification in the media. I come to dsg, etc to get away from the real world and the media world where they show us hot lean girls and tell us we need to look like that. Of course they don't say this directly but it's implied.
I really appreciate what Sapphire has to say in this case. Where whatever you do is totally open and cool but props to those who take the more challenging road. It is really easy to draw a beautiful person. But more difficult to draw someone who is rather plain or even "ugly". There are radicals on every spectrum. I happen to be the radical that is on the side where I absolutely hate the exploitation of women in any form. That's just me, I won't rip apart what you do, in fact i'll prolly make a comment like good drawing, really good but I personally don't like the content.
This issue dives deeper into people's troubles with seperating the artists from the art. I don't have to like the art to like you! I apologize if I offend but I thought I'd give a different light to the world for once. Thanks all. Great art, really!
