Hey, folks. It's been forever since I last posted, but I've been wicked busy with work. Anyway, here's a new one from the Drawing Jam (http://www.sketchbooksessions.com/shanesboard/viewtopic.php?t=14755) over at the Drawing Board.

Thats pretty cool, my favorite thing I've seen of yours.
love the lighting and the exagerated lines.
(Insert nitpick) the background is just too blured in comparison the the foreground. Now maybe if the back of the table started to go out of focus...
Nice colors on the face and skin.
I might have to buy you coffee some time...

Thanks, guys. Before I forget, here's the Process Slider (http://www.burncomics.com/post/drawingjam/2-13-04/process/) for this piece.
Thrash - I'm not sure I agree with you on the background. It's extra blurry to make the figure pop more, to give it a little depth of field. Thanks for the suggestion though.
Morlok - Funny. On The Drawing Board, there is so much cartoony work that this is almost realistic. But here on this foum, with all the painterly and more realistic work, I can totally see what you mean.

After seeing the above image I went strait to your website and... yeah... it's great. I love your characters and the style you work in. Your line work ( line weight ) is incredible and something that I should study and try to use myself. Awesome stuff....

Very cool pic, I like that mix of realism and cartoon. Only thing that bugs me is the thickness of the line. I'm sure that's just a style issue, but it bothers me in places like her left wrist, where the line is so thick on both sides that it seems to pinch the character. Anyway, it's a relatively minor thing on an otherwise great picture. Checked your webiste too, some great stuff on there. :D

Your lines are phenomenal! Such weight to them. Keep it up.

Killer Napkins - No, I'm not really 9'5". As far as I know, no human has ever been that tall. But it's funny, if I was that tall, people would probably have more respect for me. Did you know that statistically, tall men are paid more than short men?
SeraphSword - Yeah, I see what you mean with the line weighting on that wrist. I tried some new things with my line work in this. Some worked, some didn't.
jfrancis - That's a very good perception. How would you recommend simulating bokeh blur?

I really like this piece. I mean I really, really, really like it. Personally I am getting pretty tired of what seems like the four or five "styles" out there, I'm getting sick of all the figures veiled in blackness, etc. This is very refreshing to me. I'm also a little tired of the cheats I see people doing to create the illusion of form (bandages and belts wrapped around limbs, etc.). Here you're rendering form and deep space with very economical line work, and that is something few artists do well or even try to do at all. Kudos to you. It has an amazing power and solidity that defies the graceful and elegant line work. It's really superb.
Listen, I hate to tarnish the above with one stupid little sugg, so please ignore this if you don't see it this way. If it helps that's great: her lower leg (the one she's sitting on) is not quite "sticking out" to me. I mean, it's working, but to me it's working less well than the rest of the piece. Look at the lower knee (her right) relative to her left thigh/butt right above it. To me it looks as if they're right next to each other, not like the right knee is way out in front. Tell me if I'm full of it!!

OMG That process slider is COOL!!! Makes me want to take the flash class at my college. Unless you wouldn't mind explaining how you did it. Mind you I don't have the faintest clue on how to use flash, but it shouldn't be that hard right? ;)
Great job though, can't really offer any crits at the moment. :)

Blueharp411 - Thanks, man. That's about the best compliment you could have payed a piece like this. :)
Chris Beatrice - Wow, thanks for all the kudos! I do see what you are saying with her right leg. It's a very difficult foreshortening, and I'm still not entirely sure what to do with that.
SirRon - I came up with the idea for the process slider, and had a friend of mine who's a wiz with flash cook it up. I'm gonna get him to revisit it to make it more user friendly. Once that happens, I'll unleash it on the drawing board communities.
yelahttam - Well, working from reference really helps. I mean, I always have something to check with and see how light and color would really fall on the figure, but the real trick is knowing what colors should be where and bringing that out in the right proportion.
LiL QoH - Thanks, Terrie! It went great with the 'rents. I think they like me already.
