Spartan Camp #139 - 50 gestures + Optional "Sports Study"

The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 13th of June.

- The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!

- In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Sports Study", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:
Any sport will do, but obviously the ones that require physical exercise are recommended.... You may want to look for interesting action poses and postures. Key words could be movement, tension, functionality, balance/imbalance, dynamics, I hope you get the idea! With or without reference? Free choice as usual.
Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Have fun!

50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.

Critting each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference and resources!! Let's help each other get better!

Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!!

Hey all, figured I'd jump into the fray this week. My hands are pretty weak, so I did a bunch of those.

MJ Ranum's (http://www.mjranum-stock.deviantart.com/) stock is really high res, so I just zoomed in on some hands in those for a lot of these. Others were just my hands.

Need a lot more practice, but it's a start. Good luck you guys.

eekolite- Woah these stock photos are amazing...such high quality and free! Thanks so much, I will most definitely use these.

Kudos for drawings hands, they are hard for sure... :) i think your hands from life are stronger... some of them could use a little more structure, maybe draw through the shapes more, keep it simple...

Looked at Fencing this week, used flickr.com for ref... and some pics from a renaissance fair. I Suck at clothes! i need so much practice... Prolly do the study in the morning.

Hi all!

I'm a bit late but I just checked this thread today (yesterday since it's 1;20AM over here)

@ EEKLITE: Great hand studies, I love doing them but I lost inspiration on variation on poses so quick.

@ SEALEGS: Awesome studies, I love your linework. Maybe to clean for quick sketches for me but definitely a good style for even a final drawing :)
I like the little details like the coloured outlines and the texture on the background. I think that always gives those simple sketches the little extra power to feel good.
Hopefully I'll see more of your work in the next one.

@ ANTHIS: Good study as well. The quickies on the right side gives a good feeling of experimenting with lines. The linework of the chick in the middle, with her arm in a upwards angle, is my favorite. Contrast in dark and light lines and loose and firm lines combined is awesome :D Hope you don't mind my late-coming

So here's my study: To keep in the WorldChampionship-mood; Football/Soccer! And behind that, some 'real' man (and a woman sorry!)
Maybe more tomorrow! (in a few hours?!) otherwise I'll wait for the next spartancamp.

eekolite; Those are pretty smart sketches, very accurate for how 'simplified' and 'sketchy' they are. Nice use of reference too. The foreshortening can be troublesome sometimes. One thing that's interesting is that just a foreshortened (or receding in space) finger by itself may look like a shapeless lump. It may only make sense when attached to a hand. You have some really good thumbs in there, by the way. They always give me trouble.

Sealegs; Sent you a PM on the reference. Those are impressive sketches. It's nice to be able to recognize a persons body even when clothed. In those studies you can clearly recognize gender, age, fitness... Quite an achievement, and they're not the easiest of poses. You might want to follow up with some clothed poses from imagination. To challenge your own creativity - and it forces you to use the knowledge gained from these studies.

Absorber; Welcome! That's fine, I was still in the process of creating the new round. Nice variation of sketches. These sort of studies (soccer players and such) can be tough, single action shots can sometimes look really odd. Yours feel very smooth though. Those two poses in the top right display a great deal of movement. Keep it up! Don't shy away from drawing the faces (although that may be something for longer studies)
Thanks for the comment! Poses like that girl can be interesting. She was lifting up her backpack with her leg, so that she could reach inside with her hands.
