View Full Version : UPDATED: Taking a great online class with TAD starting 07-12?

There may be a handful of spots left in some of the TAD classes which we are considering opening up to Non-TAD students for this semester only. Do you want to improve your education and portfolio? Would you be interested in taking a single online class with TAD if there are any remaining seats?

When I teach my color theory classes I get the same answer every time, to an important question. "How many of you got this info in art school?". Without fail there is not one student who got all of it in their entire four years of art school. Given that, I understand the value of these classes.

A. Classes would be for only this semester beginning July 12 2010.
B. Tuition would be USD 195/month over seven months or USD 1280.00 up front or in two USD 640.00 installments in July/Aug for this semester
*instructors will vary at times as there are a number of guest professionals and instructors planned for each key class above.

I wanted to see what people thought about this as there may be a few spots open which could be filled by artists who are looking to add to their education with information that can actually improve their work and help their careers.

We look forward to your answers. Again, this is just a poll to see if there is interest. Classes are subject to availability.

Classes begin July 12 and end December 10th.

Best,

Jason Manley

Voted!

A question: most of the titles are pretty much self explanatory in term of content, but what are these classes curriculum? :
- Sketchbook
- Media One

Interested for sure.

A question though, would this class would be good for credit for those of us interested in attending TAD full time next year?

Jason Manley
June 5th, 2010, 04:39 AM
TAD classes do not have grades. When a student can show they truly know the info, they move on. If not, then it is back to the drawing board, wacom, or easel until practice gets you there. That is how art learning truly works. If you take a class and your work demonstrates all of the information presented you would not have to take the class again and could take an elective instead, if you take the full program next year, and if seats are available when you register.

Regarding curriculum, the sketchbooks class covers a full variety of lectures, demonstrations, and presentations associated with the development of ideas, and in particular your own Personal Point of View, which is key. It covers both digital and traditional assignments and fully utilizes the process used at TAD to develop images and concepts.

The Media 1 class is a comprehensive class with demonstrations, presentations, and assignments covering oil, watercolor, ink, dry media, photoshop and painter tools for creating art. Technique, process, and method is shown and explained in full. Students are encouraged to experiment and push beyond their comfort zones in order to develop fluency in a variety of media which can be used to create personal work and professional art.

Thanks for voting so far. If you are serious please vote and we will contact those who are interested when spots come available. It is first come first serve at TAD and we will help you to the very best of our ability.

We look forward to this coming semester.

Goodness I would die to take part in the colour/composition class. Sadly I'm on the other side of the world and a poor starving student at that. But what you provide sounds absolutely wonderful. And despite being in an art class/school right now. I'm certainly not learning anything from what you're to provide! *woes*

WOW!

I can't do it this semester, but if the classes remain an open option at that price, I'd love to give it a try the next.

I will be surely interested, the only reason i didn't send in my enrollment form is because of the monetary issue. But if this 3 month class is a fraction of the price, it will surely help my career. Where can we sign up?

I would definitely be interested in attending these classes. I would have to make a budget over the course of a couple of months to be able to afford it though. Hopefully, you will get some good results and have these classes available in the near future.

Cheers,

This would be simply amazing, to be able to take 1 or 2 courses online, at an affordable rate! Any big-time colleges I've found either require leaving my country and paying enormous bills, so I've always had to say no and keep dreaming.

My biggest lack of progression is due to lack of confidence, lack of confidence due to lack of practice/study/education.

A kick in the butt like this, from some amazing professionals, would be a wonderful idea!

Could consider this ;O really.
But might be too late for me right now. Besides :O learning from kings of concept art would feel way too flattering and
Simply, there are more skilled people who want in.

It just looks amazing it's all i can say :O and i could not agree more with Rashka, myself i belive TAD will be something BIG in future. You know, something that everyone will wanna be in.

And for anyone who is just able to get into there, and has enough skill to be worthy: GET IN, i belive you wont regret it.

Edit:

But im considering here, and Jason, if i can ask 2 questions: what if; student is not for concept art career, but to learn to become classical artist through theese "modern" teachings, since i mean everything is good to learn, and basically, if there is any teacher who learned even something in Atelier or anything alike, it's after all the information that passed through generations to this moment :O Isin't it the same as if atelier in this case? Just better?

And secondly, if i'm not technically skilled yet, (i gotta learn first anatomy and all, and i mean completely.) and still student, but i tell you, i do have the passion to work/study for 10 hours easily :O, and i mean. I really doubt this but, is it enough?

Hi Jason, great offer. Just so you know if TAD was fully part time I would sign up tonight, even if I didn't get a scholarship.

For me it's a problem because I have a well enough paid job in the games industry but I don't have enough money to pay the fees AND not work. If it was part time I would happily pay the fees even if it takes me 5 or 6 years to finish the course :).

I hope this helps.

I'm definitely interested and hope I get the cash for it by then, when is the latest paying date for the first month of july? and is it 195$ per month for single subject of our choice for a 7 months period?

Thank you for presenting this opportunity!

It would be great to attend Sketchbook, Color&Composition and Media !
I couldn't cope with the full monthly fee for now but 1-2 classes for part of the price is a wonderfull opportunity! Will there be some kind of competition for the places?. When/where should we sign up?.

I voted for light and form, color and comp, and sketchbook.

I'd definitely be interested in taking a class, but I was wondering how an art class works online, how far in advance we had to sign up for a monthly payment plan, and what the light and form class and color and comp classes are about. I don't understand how critiques are given and how the teaching is done. Is it over a streaming video or something?

I am planning to move in August so taking an online class would be easiest for me as I will not have a car to take a class at a community college or anything.

What are the advantages of paying to take a class over doing art on our own?

Thanks!

Edit: PS - Do we need to apply to the program with a portfolio or anything if we are only taking 1 class? Thanks

June 5th, 2010, 09:23 AM
No, I would not be interested in this class.
1. I think the cost is terribly high.
2. Colors appear differently on different computer monitors.
3. I have received quality information from rented or bought DVD's.
4. I prefer to take any class on color in a classroom setting.

I think this a great idea for people who can not afford the full TAD program, Hearing the words of wisdom from a brad Rigney or Marshall Vandruff would be well worth the money. How do we sign up? Will there be a separate enrollment form for these classes?

This sounds like a promising alternative. Even for those like myself who were accepted at TAD but simply can't afford the tuition. From my specific situation, after working in the art industry (hooray for NDA's) for awhile now I would like to view a syllabus before hand to see if it's something I'm not currently doing. Of course I'm not currently being tutored by the masters at CA specifically, but just wondering what the sketchbook course is all about.

I'm leaning towards yes but there are a lot of questions still.

What will be in the program(s)? Color concept, drawing fund., 2D design, 3D design, etc. And, how will this be presented in the online course?

For example, will the instructor use 3D modeling to complement an industrial design course online or will they use live video to present something like creating a clay sculpture? Or a mixture of both?

And, how does this benefit the user online versus taking this class with a physical teacher? What can I get from the teachers that I can't from a DVD?

I've taken a class on CGTalk and know how valuable an online course can be so this could be something I would be looking onto.

I think it's a good idea in general, especially as a sample for those who perhaps couldn't attend Discovery.

While I am interested in taking any one of them, I will be taking a full-time semester at my current school, so it would depend on how much this would conflict.

For example, how much total estimated time per week (lecture and work) will these be?
And also, it would take place on a weekday, right? I know they can be watched on demand, but if I couldn't actually attend a single lecture (due to classes at my current school) to ask questions and otherwise participate, then it would practically just be a subscription for online videos.

Maybe, someday, TAD could offer part-time classes on the weekend for those of us who would have more time on the weekends?
(I'm not necessarily asking for that now since I know this is just getting started, but I think it would be a good idea.)

(Though it did occur to me that some international students may also find some of the class times inconvenient but will just deal with it... so maybe suggesting weekend part time classes is just wishy-washy?)

I'm interested, but like all of the other posts here, there are still lots of questions to be answered before I could commit.

Mostly, why are we paying for 7 months when there are only 5 months of classes? July 12 to December 10 is 5 months.

Also:
What is the class schedule (what days and times are the lectures)?
How much time per week is required?

I would also like to see the class curriculum. If there's a link you can point us towards, please do so Jason.

My question is what level has the student ? this class is for beginners or you must have a high level drawing.

And I live outside of USA, I live in Spain (UE) and the difference of hours with USA ( depend of the coast of USA ) is important for me.

The money for me isn't a problem at this moment I'm working. on IT staff (my god I hate a lot this job).

Best Regards.

Dunno if I count, but I'd love to be taking a lot of these courses. Figure drawing is a non stop journey so one of the first. I also liked the other courses you gave on color theory and composition. I also would like to see the sketchbook. Well geeze all of them ;)

Course the problem for me is I have a full time job now so I'd have bad attendance.

Already having an MA, I would pick and choose classes based on the instructors and what they are doing with their own work. For me, Jon Foster and Android represent two facets of art that I do not normally use. I do like to paint with oils over digital under paintings, so I have some common ground with Jon. But he gets a lot losser with his paints. That intrigues me. Watching Android work has opened up concepts of digital painting that I would never have grasp on my own.

Is this brick and mortar or online? Right now I am a full time online student for Computer Animation, and it's been working pretty well. I can't relocate unless my living expenses are covered, or if I could land a job nearby......

I chose Color and Composition. I always prefer to start off small when making new commitments so as to enhance the quality of my work.

Alas, I have no funding for this. I have a portfolio available upon request, if that would help obtain scholarships. I'm very interested in the classes advertised here on ConceptArt, hope to attend some day.

I voted on Figure One, Fundamentals of Light and Form, and Color and Composition.

I am interested in taking a class, though the cost is a bit high.

I also agree with someone who said something about monitor colour varying from person to person, how would we be able to calibrate it so everyone would be seeing the same thing?

And what time would the classes be held?

June 5th, 2010, 02:22 PM
* Fundamentals of Light and Form - Dorian Iten-plus Guest instructor
* Sketchbook - Brad Rigney (Cryptcrawler) / Sterling Hundley

I would take those if I could find a way to afford it, which is out of the question, like I stated, until I get my refund for attending another art school.

Thanks for your interest. All of you. Really.

The classes are excellent. I will be posting more information for you over the next couple days and we will reach out and contact those of you who are interested.

A few things....

A. Class Curriculum- I will post this information today. I am headed down to the Austin POD and when I get back from lunch I will get that info and post it up for folks to see.
B. Pricing - Online classes for Academy of Art and the major art schools are more than double this price. TAD is doing full education at a fraction of the cost of the over-priced big schools who are charging as much as 2800.00 USD per class and have instructors who have never achieved what this instructor group has in their careers.
C. In terms of monthly payment length, this is no interest financing from TAD and we broke it into seven payments to make it easier for students to attend. If folks prefer to break it into four payments or three, that is also possible. We are simply trying to help make things easier on those who need a break in monthly expense.
D. The program is online, but classes can also be had ON DEMAND so that if you have to work or miss, you can still access your class and stay caught up. The system is available 24/7 and the instructors will be available during class times.
E. Classes alternate between lecture/demo/presentation days and feedback days. Your instructor will meet with you directly and will be providing feedback as if they were right there in the room with you.
F. We will also have a forums system for uploading your work for feedback, should you miss a class feedback day due to your location or emergency.

Masta- These classes will absolutely help your work and career. They did help mine and those around these parts who have gone on to work for the big companies after attending the workshops, the atelier, and the Illustration Academy will agree with you too. We will be contacting those who vote in the poll about the next steps and I will post here as well.

Rashka, it sounds like you are on the right track. You are absolutely right about the confidence issue. Sometimes an artist just needs more information to be able to do what they wish to do, and that makes things easier. We are not going to see you struggle to get the information you need to succeed. I went through that in art school and you will get what you came for. No doubt.

J-P: These are TAD's core foundation classes. TAD is geared toward Fine Art Drawing and Painting (Representational), Concept Art, and Illustration. This includes everything from gallery work to editorial and childrens book illustration to matte painting and character design...and more of course. TAD's program is geared to create versatility in it's students as well as develop personal point of view and a unique perspective, aside from technical mastery, which is very important. Skill level now is not important to attend the classes. We have students coming in who are at the very beginning of their art learning and that is a good time to get the right information so they don't have re-invent the wheel in learning art.

Jason- I will look forward to working with you directly then. I am happy to see you will be joining us.

Danny- Yes you are correct. Payments are due July 1 at the latest but as said, it is first come first serve so if you are interested in attending I would suggest doing what you can to prepare. Exciting stuff. I look forward to it.

Aridus- You are correct. Taking a single class is a fraction of the cost. Classes are not priced by the credit hour, they are per class. Some classes have less in-class time and additional homework time. Each class is a minimum of 6 hours per week in total. Obviously the more time one can spend the better but it ends up being about one hour per day being spent to keep up with the basics. You get out what you put in right?

Gink- We will be contacting everyone directly. Watch your emails that you signed up to the site with. Those who get back to us right away will be first in line for the open spots. We are looking forward to working with you.

Star- Single class students...We will, ask to see your work so we can get to know you and know where you are at yes. Preparing some of your images now, for when we contact you, would be a very good thing to do. Thanks for asking.

2kre8- We will be in touch. Thanks for the support too. I will also post here so you get more information. I expect to have the rest of the information up by the end of the weekend/Monday.

Michael, take a peek at my post last night. I made some comments about the sketchbook course but will be posting more info on the other classes today.

Haridimos- You can absolutely attend if you are in Europe. We have many Euro students and even students in Asia and Aus/NZ. Classes are available On Demand and we will have ways for you to work with your instructor directly, if you have work hours or the like which will conflict.

Ryu- We are not using 3d yet for these classes. We focus on core foundations in drawing and painting at first. 3d comes in a later elective. Also, take a look at the comments for our other classes if you like:

Response to TAD's Discovery overview of how we are doing the program (see what the students said) http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=183098

Response to the Free TAD workshop bannered above: http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=187742&page=7

Classes alternate between demo/presentation/assignment and then feedback and input. Artists learn as much from watching others get crits as they do from getting them for themselves. Students can interact with voice or chat and instructors can do paintovers, give real-time feedback, and provide direct support in the TAD online software system. It is state of the art stuff...and it is very much as if the teacher was right there with you.

Zirn- You could do it On Demand on the weekend if you wanted to. Also as said it is a minimum of six hours per week to get through the classes.

Laz..Cine...I think I have answered your questions through others. Please read above.

Arshes- On Demand...and I know you work hard but I also know that you need to focus on your studies no matter what. You are far too smart to get stuck in that job. Far too smart.

JCole-Sounds like you know what you are looking for. I am sure Jon and Andrew will be happy to help. I am positive about that.

Metal- keep an eye on your mail. Thanks much too.

Lemming- I think I have answered this above. Please take a look. Thanks too!

Autumn- We will post class times shortly with the info package. Also we have not had any serious issue providing feedback due to monitor color differences. The theory is very easy to understand and both usable and practical. There are some methods to get close and I will share those in class.

Jeris- I shall hope you can get things worked out. I appreciate the interest. We all do.

Yuki- We use a java based application which streams voice, video, and images directly to you. I am able to both teach and watch classes on WiFi so it is not heavy on it's own. It is a very stable and useful software we use and it has a host of great features as an online classroom.
OK..off to the POD...I will return.

Best,

You are very right regarding some instructors unfortunately but, there is some great instructors at AAU as well such as Terryl Whitlatch, who is a great artist.

There is no way to obtain financial aid through your school though is there? Just curious. It is still cheaper but, not as easily attend-able even considering that unfortunately, due to the lack of access to financial aid that a lot of students have to rely on IMO.

I am still going to find a way to attend TAD eventually, ASAP. The instructors are great. I know you guys must know your stuff.

There are definitely a few classes I would be interested in - I voted for the ones in the poll. I'd have to see the syllabus or course description to really know for sure though.

I would try to take advantage of this opportunity for sure. I've been slowly working my way thru the Discovery on-demand classes and they've been fairly good.

So these classes would be $1280 per class?
Are the lectures once a day, once a week, 3x week or something else? And how long is each class lecture and what time during the day.
I'm just trying to figure out time commitments with work taking 45-60 hrs/wk and if I would ever be able to make it to a live class or have to watch everything on demand.

Thanks!

It looks mighty interesting!
I wonder at what time classes will happen for me on the GTM-5 (Eastern?) timezone...

I've recently finished studies to be a Character Modeler but I found out that I've got more potential to work in 2D than in 3D and am looking forward learning the trade of Concept Artist (and/or Illustrator)...
Now, I think I do not really have the proper tools to paint non-digitally (best I've got is my old acrylic painting material from school years ago), tough I'm somewhat correctly equipped for traditional drawing (with sanguine, charcoal, pencils of different values, etc) and then I got digital painting covered.
So, I don't really know if I could take classes asking for, say, oil paint... :/

Otherwise, I'd think I'd skip Digital Photography if it does imply taking pictures- I've already done a little bit of it in school and it's not the most useful class for me...

I voted "more than 2" bur I'd need to fully know what to pick.

And, if I may be so bold, would these classes count for something if one decides to become a *real* TAD student, like not having to re-take such classes (proven you've shown to understand and are able to apply the principles)? Plus, is there some sort of certificate-thing as a proof you've attended those classes (which is always a plus for employers that are interested in your resume)?

Thanks!

Classes range from 3 to 6 hours per week. The shorter classes are intensive, of equal information and will have homework which balances the time spent in class. You can find the actual daily schedule here: http://theartdepartment.org/info/curr_test.html#electives at the very top of the page. That way you know what days the classes are.

* Figure One 6 hours
* Fundamentals of Light and Form 6 hours
* Sketchbook 3 hours
* Digital Photography for Artists 3 hours
* Color and Composition 3 hours
* Linear Perspective 3 hours
* Media One 6 hours

* Upon class completion, each student meets with their Review Committee. The Review Committee is made up of 6 individuals: 3 full-time faculty members, and 3 prominent individuals from the industry.

Classes alternate between Demonstration/Presentation days and Review/Feedback days.

Morning classes (CDT time) begin at 8am Pacific (11am New York City time) and there is a one hour break after the first three hours (either one or two classes depending on what day it is). Afternoon (CDT time) classes begin after the one hour break. All classes are available On Demand for those who cannot make the scheduled live class. For those that are unable to make feedback classes due to time zone conflicts, they will still have their work reviewed and that review will also be available On Demand so you get the input on your work. Particular questions can be asked to the instructors using a variety of tools that are available.

There are a host of industry professionals/faculty participating in class portfolio reviews during the semester. If you take my color class, for example, you could see input from artists like Andrew Jones, Anita Kunz, Brent Watkinson or artists who work at the big companies like id software or other important studios. You will get the input you need.

More info to come in the next couple days. Sign-up's will start Monday and we will send and post more information shortly.

Thanks everyone! This is an exciting time for sure. I must rest before typing more though. I am up at seven to head to the Richmond POD to teach at the Illustration Academy on Monday. See you all in class on July 12 I hope! We have a lot to share and are going to get right down to it.

Like many others, would love to do, but too much for my meagre budget.

Jason you are the best. Ever since I first heard of TAD I hoped it would be available part time. I will be taking two of your classes now and I will take two more classes as soon as these finish.

I want:
Colour and Composition
Fundamentals of Light and Form
Media
Sketchbook

I'll be meeting Andrew Jones in a couple of weeks (although he doesn't know me yet) so I guess I'll have to take Media one..

To be honest I'd like to take all the classes. When the first set of classes finish will a new set of classes begin in January? I mean will I be able to take Colour and Composition and Fundamentals of Light and form now and Media and Sketchbook in January?

Next all you have to do is open up a POD in Europe and I'll send you a a painting to stick on your wall. :)

PS If you need help promoting your schools in MADE I'll take time to sing the praise of CA, VLP and TAD. Just tell me where to volunteer.

I'm definitely interested but a little worried that it would just be too isolated for me in my crazy time zone. (classes would start at midnight here!) I don't know if I would get as much out of it if I'm just an outsider always looking in on things afterward rather than ever getting to participate myself or have any kind of communication.

This seems like an incredible offer, and I'm definitely interested. However I'm studying overseas during the summer, and I'll have limited access to the internet and a full set of courses. Hopefully you guys will offer more opportunities like this. It really seems like you guys are dedicated to helping young artists improve their technique.

Haven't voted, but it is mainly because it is uncertain I can attend this year- moving and so both physically and monetary unavailability stops me, but if you'd want to know interest-level: please add me to the list for sketchbooks. The moment I have moved and gathered up the money for it I will take that class if still available.

I pretty much would love to get all of them =D (besides, i think i would need all of them O.o) but if i have to choose, i'd get ;

- Fundamentals of Light and Form
- Figure One
- Color and Composition

Not sure if i can get money nor present a suitable "portfolio" ._. Still, i think i'd take a shot.

Students will be required to listen to the other students critiques, as we all learn from watching others mistakes and successes too.

How do I cover tuition? Email thegator@theartdepartment.org and he will assist you personally.

I will be sending out an email like this for each class available. When you respond please confirm which class, or classes, you are signing up for. This is a great opportunity and I am very much looking forward to working with you directly and have an awesome slate of guest instructors coming in to share their knowledge too. If you get more than one email it is because you voted for more than one class. I am sending each out individually. With that said, let's get on to the course description:

Color Theory and Composition: In this comprehensive class, there will be live demonstrations, informative lectures, and the information you need to take bigger steps in your art. You will learn to improve the foundations for all of your future artwork You will see improved ability to create unified works which communicate rich moods, stories, and ideas, specific to the art you are making.

You will experience hands on refinement of the principles of design, composition and color, and gain a better understanding of practical ideas on mood and imagination development, which can be immediately be put to use in your art.. You will be better able to create images that tell stories, communicate, and control all aspects of the images being projected from imaginations and through both digital and traditional media.

The history of compositional and color theory will be outlined so students are able to better base their images compositions in ideas that suit their needs as creative and independent artists. Terry Brown, the Director of the Norman Rockwell Museum and the former President of the Society of Illustrators in NY will be sharing his knowledge on the History of Illustration which I will be relating to both compositional and color theory and practical use.

This class will help you more precisely control not only how the viewer reads your image, but will impart the information needed to put that viewer in a state of emotion and feeling that you choose to have in your work. You will learn the information needed to control time of day in your images, cleanly communicate your visual stories, and understand a variety of methods related to constructing images for Fine Art, Entertainment Design, Illustration, Storyboarding, and even Photography. You will get to know a great faculty group, and be participating in a stellar and talented student body. This opportunity is a very good one. I would like to see you in class.

This class is suited for both the beginner and advanced student and the faculty will be working with each person individually to assist them in their path and art. We are here to help.

Again, please respond so we can be sure you get your spot! If you have questions, please let us know right away.

Best and thanks,

I guess I need to make a clear choice else I won't be contacted...
I'm very uncertain about what's best for an aspiring Concept Artist and what would happens to be the areas I'd need to work on the most....
So, having to make a choice, I'd pick:

Fundamentals of Light and Form
Sketchbook
Color and Composition

Sorry Jason! I know you're super busy.. and I am impatient but at least you can sense my enthusiasm! (I hope)

Chat during the week. Oh one question, when I do pay for the classes is there somewhere special you want us to upload portfolio pieces so you know what level we are at and that kind of thing? Sorry if you gave this information and I missed it somewhere.

Does Fundamentals of Light and Form cause much?
and also the color and comparison?

Personally, I don't think I would ever take a single class, unless I knew I could go all the way with it, some day I hope to see if I can manage a scholarship, until then I doubt I'd take just 1 class, IF I did however, it would be the color and composition class - So I voted for that one.

If you want to take a single class, or more than one you can reach us at infoATtheartdepartment.org or my email in the post below and sign up that way too. You can also ask questions offline there if you wish.

Man I canīt make up my mind if I want to take the Sketchbook program or the Colour and Composition... Both are important for me I feel. Any suggestions on which is good to start off with? Because like I said in the mail to you, Jason, I think I will only have time for one program at the time, this time around.

They are both equal. You can start with either. Sketchbooks is more about developing ideas and color and comp is more about the roots of image making. They go hand in hand. The choice is yours. :)

I've signed up and paid! See you in a few weeks. For the rest of you who are debating: This might be the only chance you get such a good offer. I know I'm stating the obvious but if you're working and you love drawing then TAD is the place to get motivated. I've joined VLP and done a few tutorial sessions with Jason Manley et al and I have improved massivley in just one month. Imagine what 6 months will do to me and the rest of you and with direct tuition!? I hope to see you all in colour-comp and light-form soon.

J out.

Figure Drawing: This unique and in-depth class features costumed and nude models shot with very high quality cameras and lighting. An innovative approach is used, combining two methods which together, give the students a full understanding of how to approach drawing the human figure from life and imagination. The first is an optical and painterly approach stressing the silhouette of the form. This teaches the student to view the entire figure as a unit, and to focus on the overall shape. The second is constructive, teaching the student how to develop and use anatomy knowledge in order to build the human figure with a sculptural approach, creating rich three dimensional work. These techniques can then be translated into every aspect of drawing, design, and painting. Students will learn to stress the character and of the figure, they are drawing on paper, in order to strengthen the soul and life in the image being created. Media: graphite, charcoal, digital media, and pastel. Students will be able to see demonstrations, presentations and get feedback on their work both Live and On Demand, allowing for unprecidented schedule flexibility.

Composition and Color Theory: This comprehensive class features lectures, presentations, demonstrations, and personal feedback both Live and On Demand. Students will gain an understanding of the history and development of composition over time, and across cultures. The principles of design, spacial theory, tonal pattern, linear design, abstraction, temperature, value, saturation, color movement, hue, narrative color, cultural color, mood and emotion form the foundations for all future artwork created by TAD students. This important class will improve students abilities to create images which communicate ideas, stories, content, and give emotional impact to their works from imagination, reference and life. Armed with a full body of compositional theory not available in any other single program, TAD students will see rapid improvement in their works during and after this valuable class.

Fundamentals of Light and Form: Light and form are two of the key components for communcation in Art. These two aspects of image creation foundations are covered at length in this informative class. The principles of light will be covered at length, allowing students to understand the information they need to be able to control lighting from imagination, improve their use of photographic reference, and better communicate ideas, mood, and narrative. Students will apply their learnings through the time honored tradition of study of the plaster cast, still life, environmental and landscape drawing, master studies, and the creation of personal works. Theories utilizing these principles will be practiced and understood, enabling students to create believe-able three dimensional objects, structures, and spaces in their works. Value theory will also be covered. This class is available Live and On Demand, and like all other TAD classes enable students to attend from any location where there is internet. Students will interact directly with faculty to improve their foundation studies.

Sketchbooks: The sketchbook is the birth place of an artist's ideas. It is where a creative person learns to develop their own unique and personal point of view. In this highly informative class, students will begin to understand TAD's five step process, generate and perfect ideas, and begin to hone their abilities to communicate. The sketchbook class is focused on students needs to have personal idea exploration, a safe place to make mistakes and explore content, and practice their skills. This class is geared toward students who wish to have a wide variety of abilities to design, compose, and create from life, reference, and imagination. This is one of the single most important classes TAD offers and is required of all long term TAD students.

Perspective: Linear perspective enables artists to create believe-able spaces through their learning to understand how the visual world actually works in volumetric space. One-point, two-point, three-point, and forced perspective are covered at length enabling students to build forms and environments in space to precision. Linear perspective is a core foundation for image creation and once understood, enables students to quickly see what is wrong with the spaces and forms they are creating from life and imagination. This class is important for figure work from imagination, building environments, and placing objects in images in ways which make sense to the viewers and hold the images together compositionally and structurally. This very important class is available Live and On Demand and as is the case with all TAD classes, is made up of demonstrations, lectures, presentations and contains information valuable to artists of all skill levels and trades whether it is for commercial or personal work.

Media One: Media class covers a host of exciting and interesting media including graphite, charcoals, oils, watercolors, acrylics, colored pencil, chalk, pastel, conte, photoshop, painter 11, sketch-up, pen, and ink. An artist with capabilities in a variety of media has a greater ability to create images for all purposes. Technique and process are of very heavy focus in this class and each media will be demonstrated and presented prior to a student beginning studies. Wet, dry, and digital media processes will be explored, shared, and developed during this valuable class. TAD students attending Media One can attend both Live and On Demand, enabling a fully flexible schedule for viewing the classes and getting the direct and personal feedback required to be successful.

Digital Photography for Artists: Artists are not able to work from life or imagination in order to complete timely and professional quality works. When an artist struggles it is often because they do not have all the information needed to create their artwork. This key class covers the basics and important fundamentals for shooting reference and lighting subject matter for mood and information gathering. Students will use the digital camera and learn all the necessary information on the best methods for creating their own reference library and materials. A variety of lighting fundamentals will be covered, as well as information on the tools and techniques best used to develop the materials necessary to create a professional body of work. This class is available Live and On Demand, enabling a fully flexible schedule for viewing the classes and getting the direct and personal feedback required to see success in their work.
