View Full Version : Painter 11 Gradation

I'm trying to use gradations in Painter 11.
They basically work, but you can see lines perpendicular to the linear gradient effect. Is there anything that can be done about that?
I'd prefer that it were more smooth.
Here's an example that I posted on Flickr:

Any ideas about how to do this better would be appreciated!
Thanks

Quickly going over the area with the diffuse blender (under blenders) will smooth the area up nicely as I did to your image ;)
Why this is occurring I´m sure someone else can explain :)

also running a focus -> soften filter will remove streaks pretty nicely.
I do it with all my painter airbrushing, since it has visible and annoying graphic artefacts too.

Ah yes, the Painter's famed striated gradations. 11 versions and still not fixed. >_<

Great suggestion ikken. I actually haven´t done it that way in a while... I guess you get into the habit of doing it one way instead of both ways.

The "reason" is a lack of a dither option -- It is also a part of the reason things like the glow brush don't work as well as they could... dither is a VERY simple thing but you really miss it when you don't have it.
Best,
Jason.

I have F5 set as shortcut for soften filter, so it's quick thing to do without digging into menus.
And I'm still under impression that they had either better, or at least some kind of diftering in painter 6/7.
stuff didn't look that crappy there :<

Is this using the bucket fill gradient the 2 point? I wasn't able to replicate it.

they're quite useful once you set them up...
here's my p6 list (that version doesn't have custom keyboard shortcuts except for F-keys)

Hi,
Thanks for your answers. I tried Soften filter and also the diffuse blender.
It's better, but still isn't as good as I'd like. Using the blender is difficult so as not to affect other parts of the picture next to the gradient area.

Wouldn't you just make a selection or mask the area you're working on in this case?

I contacted Painter customer support and they confirmed that this is a bug, or at least this is the way that this feature currently works.
Can you tell me how I can apply the mask. Is there a quick way to create a mask from the region where the gradient was just applied?
Thanks
