I'm having trouble understanding how to construct the form of the figure with squares, my stuff always ends a lot larger than meant too and out of proportion. suggestions?

Just use your pieces with the wrong proportions as references and redraw the pieces with the correct proportions. If you can tell what’s wrong then you should be able to correct it.

also you should use a mirror, to see drawing in reverse before you really get into it. what may look right to you now can look very, very wrong in reverse. you can then catch your mistakes early on and fix them (happy face icon)!
