Not sure if this is where I post this. Trying to do a quick drawing a day at lunch hour. Spent half an hour on it, then back to 1942 for the rest of lunch. Used Painter 8: lines gouche, felt pen for colors...uh...grays.
Hopefully they'll get better ;)

Pretty awsome.. i would love it if you could do a little walkthrough and explain some of the how of such an image. My problem is propably choosing the right tool ect.
Anyhow awsome, and would love it if you could find the time to do a tutorial/walkthrough of a similar image :D

Dude, that's awesome. Looks really good and only a 1/2 hour? Pardon my ignorance, but what do you mean "back to 1942"? I agree with Swoop, a little walkthrough would be cool. I always like to see the process of other artists. I do, however, understand what it is like to draw through a lunch hour - no time to scan the steps. Good work Doug.:chug:

Hey thanks, appreciate the compliments. 1942 is the game Battlefield 1942. There's a group here that plays. Here's me process, please ignore the ol' lame drawing, it was sooper fast!
1. Quick line drawing using the gouache brush.
2. Lower the layer opacity.
3. On a new layer, draw the image, still using the gouache brush. I like to keep it loose, but that's just me.
4. Paint or use the selection tool to lay down some base color underneath your line drawing.
5. Use "Preserve Transparency" and "Pick Up Underlying" Color, and lay in your values.
6. Little bit of touch up and poof you're done!
That's it, pretty basic, but it's fast. That's the one thing I think I have going for me is I work pretty fast. Hope you enjoy.

Hey swoop, with my shading I use a felt pen with buildup, and Pick Up Underlying Color. Imagine flat planes with your work and how light would hit them. I like to keep it loose and simple, but above all else, HAVE FUN!
There's a million different styles, and ways to achieve them, I'm still looking for mine. I just enjoy drawing.

Hey there. This is my first post, but I must say that your drawings are stunning. I'm interested in drawing using tablets (I have a very basic one, which doesn't respond well) and I'd like to know; what kind of tablet do you use? I am prepared to buy something that is mid to high price range (quality is a must), but I don't know too much about which tablets are the 'best.' Any help would be greatly appreciated. =)

Hey thanks. Glad people seem to enjoy this stuff.
Swoop: I size them down
Zealot-X: I use the 6x9 Wacom Intuos (sp?). Fpr me it's the best, not to small, not to big. I have three diff versions of it from three diff jobs, all are great.
Zealot-X
February 26th, 2004, 08:20 PM
Thanks; I'm looking into an Intuos2 right now actually.
How much different is it than a canvas or a sketch pad? I currently have used a few lower-end Wacoms (Graphire?) and found them to be somewhat unresponsive and unnatural. Perhaps it was the pressure settings on the tablet, but I felt that it did not respond the way I would have expected.
What is the closest medium you can relate it to? Marker?

Hey no prob, and thanks!
I use the "Design Marker"
Then in "Edit Variant" (just to the right of the brush) select "Cover" (instead of Buildup).
Then just above your layers check the "Pick Up Underlying Colors" (get rid of this white outline that usually appears).
That should do it!

Alright, do these aren't an everyday thing anymore, at least until E3's over. Check it though, I made up my days.
So; yes I love Moebius, I don't know what that bucket/cage thing is in front of the hut (this piece was just to test some brushes, but I kind of liked the mood), and sloppy samurai attacks the snow worm...thingy.:)

If you like Moebius, know that Enki Bilal (another famous French comic artist of the same caliber, I would say) released his first movie. It's actually in English (for wider audience), but for some reasons, I haven't seen/heard any advertisement for it in the US:
Here's the link http://www.immortel-lefilm.com/
Watch that trailer! it's based on his comics.

Hey thanks. I love those beasties too.
Here's one I messed up. Spent over an hour on it.
It's supposed to be a giant metal face, and for a bit looked really monolithic. Then I noodleed nd over-detailed it. Lost some of the "big" it had. Still, I learned a bit. Don't do many painted pieces, so they all end up teaching me.

weird horse thing but fantastic sense of scale which changed the second time I looked at it. First time it was about 5000 feet tall, then it was suddenly about 400, I think it is the sudden realisation that they are single buildings it's stalking among

Wow thanks everybody. I like the Power Rangers idea. The foursemen (tm) would fight something living everyweek, and kill it by the end of the show.
These I don't care for, I started on them late and was tired when I began working on them. Please ignore that I eyeballed (ahem...butchered) the perspective on that ship. I do want to do more ships, so I can use this piece and a starting point to see if i improve.

Here's one that I'm not to happy with. For a moment I really liked it, but kept noodeling it...until it died. Learning though, and I do like the engine/thruster area. Funny, those thrusters were robot eyes when I started this, but I saw the shape of the ship and went for it.

this image. I'm having trouble understanding how you create such a smooth surface with the color. It appears as though you could actually reach out and slide your fingers along his forehead and hear "ssqqqcckkkk"
I mean, I'm partially colorblind here, so maybe I can't see all the colors here but I think it's the way you blend all the colors together from one to the next, sort of like small gradients here and there.

I am sorry to your thread, and I hope you have time to respond to everything, but I really wanted to say one more thing:
[i]Originally posted by Dougbot

Everyone who enters this thread should look at this image. Even if the image was created hastily there was deliberate thought and attention given to every important part. No piece seems to be placed in the vein of "design" yet everything falls into a great balance. The unit on the back of the head seems to be either a battery unit or more space for inner equipment. The two hydrolic shaped valves are robotic replacements for the two tendons in the human neck that allow us to move our heads, up, down, left, or right. There's even a rubber-ish fiber threading right into the face for muscle movement and facial expressions and whatever kind of circle on the side represents an ear to some extent.
I would just like to say this is a great study piece for how form and function need to work to better each other and that you've created something that stimulates my brain for a little while when I look at it. I think all art should strive to make the viewer stay on the image as long as possible and you've done that.

I know I'm goona sound like a noob, but whats a Wacom? Is it the thing you use a stylist pen and draw on a pad that converts it onto the screen? And did you take any art classes in college/highschool? Because it seems what you are (a concept artist for gaming company?), is what I want to be when I get a little bit older. I still have time to decide what college I want to go to (im going into 11th), and I'd like to know what classes you took / what I should take to improve my skills in that area. And, BTW, AWSOME drawings. Your creativity is amazing. I think I have the mind to come up with monsters/beings like that, but I can't really put it down on paper too good.
