ROUND #200 :: The MONARCH of CHOW
DESCRIPTION
The MONARCH of CHOW
The queen is dead. Long live the... queen? 200 ChOWS, or rather 199 and it’s time for a new mascot, and this time it doesn’t HAVE to be a Queen. We want a monarch, so it could easily be a king instead.
The flag bearers have raised their poles. The courtiers are quivering in antici.... pation. The herald has blown his trumpet dry and the ministers are stroking their long... beards! The stage is set for a monarch’s grand arrival so let’s see that royal entrance! Design and create the King or Queen of MUSIC. What kind of music? Well, that’s up to you. Put your take on it. Metal, punk, classical, country, industrial, rockabilly, dance, goth, EMO, AOR, hard house, rap... the list goes on! Or somehow incorporate all those genres into one, if you’re plain bonkers enough.
Need more options? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_music_styles
Remember, the monarch is to be the mascot of the next 100 ChOWS! The reigning sovereign, so regal quality is pretty essential to the character; otherwise it’s a fairly free brief. Make sure your chosen music is reflected in the character and costume and we want only one character design, male, female or any points in-between. As for whether human or not, human please as this is based on human experience. But variations thereof: ie: angel, vampire, mermaid etc. are OK as they feature in a lot of musical symbolism. More than one entry is permitted.
Have fun! But please keep the Youtube inspiration clips to a minimum!
This is a MONTH ChoW.

(I was under the impression that an explanation our process was wanted, so below is an explanation of that. If you don't care, don't bother to read on.)
A few words about the character design: I wanted to focus more so on the music and instruments commonly involved in Rock, rather than the personality and style of the fans of various sub-genres of Rock. I felt like if I dressed her up in say, a punk rock outfit, she could never look royal enough to be a queen. I didn't want her to look like some punk trying to be a queen, I wanted her to be a queen who represents rock. That said, I began my concept sketch with what I believed looked like a queen. Then I began fusing her with various rock instruments. The focus had to be on the electric guitar, so naturally the crown was made of that and piano keys. I also went with mini-drums on her right arm, drum sticks on her shoulder armor, and guitar picks in her forearm greave. Decorating her with instruments wasn't quite enough though. I felt that if she was going to be queen of rock, the music had to be a part of her. So I made her hair curl in such a way that it looks like music notes. the strands across the front of her face make up the staff, and on it, two more hair curls make up two eighth notes.
That's all for the actual design of the character. The process of finishing the concept art is actually new to me. I saw this method of a black and white under-painting done on a youtube tutorial by Peter Mohrbacher. basically, after the black and white you just use overlay layers to color the image. I've been trying to find a technique for painting digitally that I click with for a while, and for whatever reason, possibly because it feels similar to how I paint traditionally, this one seems to be it. Anyway, this is the first finished work I've done with this technique, and I'm really pleased with the results.
This Chow was really fun for me, this was my first one (lots of firsts, woohoo!), hopefully of many.

Initial thots of the King of Metal were of Metallica, mostly of Kirk Hammet, his powerful stance, low slung guitar, hair flying... powerful. Thats what i wanted to get at, raw power..

This has been a huge learning experience for me - I definitely pushed my limits. I was more patient, tried out new tips and tricks and got a result I am essentially really happy about. I didn't think I'd be able to pull something like this off, but I just goes to show - we know more than we give ourselves credit for...
The feedback was a great help, and I got some great tips from many in the forum - so thanks guys!
I can't wait for the next challenge. Good luck to all!

The Kaiser of Glam Rock
The first thing that came to my mind were my favorite types of music and artists. Rock, especially glam and classic rock. David Bowie is a god and I love the 70's and 80's groups like The Rolling Stones, Kiss, Motley Crew, Poison etc. I started my basic sketches first not really having a direction except a few reference photo's of Bowie and then scanned it. Decided to outline it with Photoshop instead of ink, i thought this might be easier and allow me to create more versatile shapes. It especially helped when i started laying down my basic colors. After that just kept rendering until i was happy :)

Here is one of two entries I'm probably going to submit. ....We can submit more than one this time, right?
This first one is the Queen of Progressive Rock.
I was really inspired by bands like Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, The Mars Volta, Yes, and the like. I tried not to focus on a certain aesthetic for this piece, because members of the genre don't really have a set fashion. Rather, I was inspired by the spaced-out feel of the genre, as well as a few Roger Dean paintings.
This was my first CHOW entry and I plan on doing more. I've found the process behind this really helpful.
The second final isn't done yet, but I'm planning on basing it off post-rock.

oh man ... time's running out. i would've loved to get more into the painting, but I gotta catch a flight tomorrow. :/
anyway, here it is, more a work a progress than a finished piece.
The Monarch of Funk-Jazz, a synthesis of two styles that have influenced modern music to a tremendous degree. One being the ancestor of today's dance scene, the other a successor of yesterday's classical music.
I tried to capture the regal quality with mood and attitude and less with symbols. A true and powerful monarch does not need a crown, nor any symbolism to clarify his status - that was my thought, and I don't know if I have accomplished that goal. The process was pretty straightforward. just painted what came to mind.
comments and critiques are highly welcome!

"On that world you vision, through the layers of tears
The ones you choke and keep hidden when the players are near
I watch you chase it with beers and frustration and fear
Try to figure out why the hell I came here
Well I don't know either, and I'm not ready to take a breather neither
All I know is I'm still a believer
So you can beat me up, or you can beat me off
Pick a side, any side, and let me do my job"-Atmosphere

The Queen of Nagauta - traditional Japanese music which accompanies the kabuki theater. The shamisen, a plucked lute with three strings, is a very popular instrument in nagauta. Nagauta performers generally play the shamisen and sing simultaneously.
She looks like a demon because in kabuki often someone played demon and some kind of fox ghost geisha ( well i think so :))

What a fun round! Here is my entry:
The queen of Celtic Music! I used a lot of Celtic knotwork and wood instruments as inspiration, and all of the fables and woodlands that normally come to mind when Celtic music is played. I was going for a more fairy-folk celtic type feel, with a hint of magic ;)
Good luck to all the entrants, some amazing pieces in this round!!!

here's mine. had ago at an emo queen. did quite abit of research into emo to try and figure it out abit. so ended up messing around with the ideas of heart break, self harm and light n dark for the monarch. hence her walking into darkness with light behind her, slashed arms, broken hearts graphic etc. tried to keep the monarch element in there with a crown of blades and the cape. the mic i kept at kinda sceptre length to. not sure if it all comes across very well but ha i tried :p.

King of the bar song. Inspired by the music of the Pogues and the Barley Mow drinking song. The idea's pretty straightforward - there's nothing like a good shanty, and anything that'll get you swinging a pint around is this guy's territory. I thought it was important to include the crowd, as the chanting and chaos is just a big a part of the music as he is.

Missile... I live the design hints to past eras and the framing of her. Voted cause I really liked the image, but I'd have probably been hard pressed to guess she was a queen of any kind of music.
Quinn Simoes. This is awesome character design. One of my favourite images as you adressed both parts of the brief (monarch and music). Love the fact the design hints are quite subtle too. Great colour and rendering on top.
Sakuranym: Probably my fave of the lot. Great design, I love your style and colour choices, a gorgeous image that had inspired me to try my own hand at a celtic queen, but I ran out of time :/.
No87: There's just enough hints in this to get at the idea of a monarch within the genre of music, and I love the pose.. she's got a load of character.
LeoListens. Great work at taking this to an entirely different level to most of the entries here, this got my vote for most unique, but it's a cracking piece of design and colour control. Love it!
Artina: You absolutely nailed regal on this. I voted mostly because I love the character, but again, I wish there'd been a little more of a hint as to his 'music' side of things (maybe something like hints of stage props/speakers etc in the background), but it wasn't quite enough to put me off voting.
Lianti: spent a while just looking at this one. Couldn't quite decide if I liked it or not, but in the end I think it fulfils the brief well, and the fact it caught my attention for such a span of time swung me into voting! He's kinda like what would happen if you took a renaissance-stlye lute player and plonked into a rock festival in modern times.
Brandozer: Awesome character design here, and another of my overall faves. Love the style, the colour usage, in a glimpse it's quite obvious what she is and the kind of character she possesses.
Couple of near misses for votes too:
Bendragon: I really liked your character design, but the image as a whole felt very busy, and the background distracts from the character.
Iviatt: Another great sense of design here, and your colours are lovely... I just felt she was lacking in the regal feeling.
Arthemis: I can't tell you how much I love this image... the colours, the style choice, the way the pixel blends with smoother rendering. Very skillfully done. But in the end if I'd looked at this image without the brief, aside from the small speaker to her left, there wasn't much in this that said music to me. She'd rock a queen of the 8bit consoles tho!
Also, Daest... is there a reason QueenGwenevere's image isn't in the poll? Or am I being blind? I really liked that image and wanted to vote for it!

Wow what a tremendous waste of my time. You guys need to get your act together! How did we lose the extra 24 hours while I was at work? I would have just posted last night. What a joke.
If you find this a waste of time because you're now not elligible to 'win' you're here for entirely wrong reasons.
Another thing: Although this is a queen round and all, I don't think any of these works (including mine) surpass or even comes close to Jessies reigning Queen, both in design and execution.
I miss a lot of regal qualities and just see a lot of musicians or the other way around with a too subtle reference to the music where it's just an anime girl. Sounds harsh maybe, but I can't be the only one thinking or noticing this.

I have to agree... I don't want to be negative, but where were all the "pros":P? I was really looking forward to Aly's and Jessiebeans piece for instance... There are still a couple of really good ones, I really like Brandozer, Sakuranym and Sentinel. But this round doesn't feel any more spectacular than a regular Chow :P

I don't know what on EARTH you are banging on about Manaburn. You had a month plus a day extension to get one image done, how much time do you actually need? Lecturing us is going to get you short shrift round here!
As for 'standards' of art here, there are actually some fine pieces, but ChoW is not really about a showcase for pros., it's about getting better and honing your character skills. And people have other priorities from time to time. Jessi's last Queen was a great image and so deserved the title spot, but with respect to all, I don't care if the final piece is rendered to the nth degree and shines like a beacon of light, if it's a good concept then it deserves to win, so look at what we have here and vote for what you think is the best image/concept/character.
As for me, I had a finished piece, but as a mod I wait to see how the entries are going and only submit if it looks like there's space. The first priority for space in the poll is the entrants not the mods as far as I'm concerned.
Queen Gwenevere - I have no idea why you aren't there. I saved the image and resized it, so it should be. I'll look into it and get back to you.

Queen Gwenevere - Your image wasn't in the Photobucket account where we store the resized pieces. I know what happened. I had a browser crash when I was saving them to Photobucket last night, yours obviously was the one that didn't get there. For me it was between Sentinals Queen of Indie and Artemis 8bit Queen.
Both of them completely captured what the essense of their genre was. The means of creating the art was also an expression of the particular musical style.
I gave the edge to Sentinal because of the subtlety in which he/she captured the feeling of Indie. And not to mention Indie is, by its very nature, hard to categorize. But you did a great job. The graffitied crown on the wall speaks volumes about the character and Indie itself. Artistically, what really won me over was the deftness of the shadow notes against the light, both on the figure and the wall. Convincing yet subtly handled...She is simultaneously "Indi-fferent" yet regal at the same time. Awesome.
And great job to everyone who very obviously put in alot of thought and effort into their pieces! Keep it coming!

Brandozer - because it filled the brief with kick ass monarchy!! What a woman - I liked the nod to a Frazzetta style female here too and the balance of the image and the drama and colours. Gorgeous.
However, I also loved....
Sakuranym - really beautiful and very regal.
Lodin - cheeky! Love the attitude.
Matt - gorgeous style, really love the hands, very rubenesque.

I think it's kinda funny how people interpret genres and how to portray them. I think Brandozer's image is a cliche filled metalposter, Sentinel's image doesn't spell indie for me at all but more like hipster electro80sindiepopcrap and Arthemis's 8-bit queen has a bit too much 16 or even 32-bit influences ;)

True, I see what you're saying. I think a lot of that can be left open to individual interpretation. For myself, I voted based on "regal presence" mixed with an obvious musical theme. It didn't necessarily have to be spot-on as far as its genre (just for my own opinion!), but I can absolutely understand how that can sway someone else's vote.

I totally agree with that, but for me personally and please let nobody take offense in this: I'd rather see the pro's smacking my ass here showing off because it's something I can look up to and motivates me to try even harder. I agree with you on that but on the other hand most of the time the voting is lopsided in one persons direction, little crits/paintovers and all, it'd be nice to have a "Mentor CHOW" sometime, where a pro, or someone at that level picks a newbie and works with them to produce that week/month's character.
By the way on the voting note, I personally found the C.O.W. way of voting a bit better because I get the feeling people don't really spend time looking at the individual pieces and vote by thumbnail only lately (whereas COW you have names and below in the thread the pieces themselves. Just a personal pref. though.
I voted for a few myself, but the one that stood out to me was Pinback, the linework and color is top notch, though I liked the full version vs. the cropped.

Exciting stuff. And Rashufachekblah, I know you seem confused as to your 3/4 cut, even with your gown the image does seem to be more... 2/3's maybe. Not quite 3/4. I think to be safe in the 3/4 rule you have to at least be able to imagine there are knees somewhere within the confines of the image. Under clothing or not. Sorry yours got cut!
Pinback - I was sad to see yours cropped off. I loved those horns. I really love your style of rendering too.
Matt or it is it Natt - I love this image, it's textured so well, seems very mixed media.

Seems to be some slight bitterness from some about this CHOW, which I think is unwarranted. I thought it was a fantastic turnout, many diverse and wondrous styles, and a buttload of professional AAA quality entries. Where are the pro's? Hell they're massacring me in the polls is where they are! But I didn't enter to win, I just wanted to look back on CHOW #200 knowing I was a part of this fine event!
And thanks to the Mods for your toil, bang-up job yo!
Reymus+Astro Aww shucks, thanks guys. I hadn't really finished my entry (pretty much my first attempt at painting with a tablet), I bit off more than I could chew as usual, and it was either submit a detail or post unfinished work. Yeah, it is a bit cliche'd, but its just a really dynamic and powerful image. Sometimes its better than trying to be too original/clever. If that makes sense!

Quinn Simoes: I love the use of horns and the subtle way you've handled the dress. And the face. Quite Giger, but very unique at the same time. You've really captured that grim side of music.
Arthemis IX: The thumbnail of this doesn't really do it justice. Great concept, the colours you've used look like they could have been plucked right out of an old video game but aren't painful on the eyes.. it actually works well.
