View Full Version : Working in CMYK

I've noticed lately that my brushes and brushstrokes are smoother when I work in CMYK mode in photoshop CS4 as opposed to RGB mode where my brushes tend to lag. Has anyone else experienced this, or it's just my computer acting up in RGB mode. Although there is a drawback to this as my paintings seem to be darker on other computers it could also be because I'm working on a laptop that I have yet to know how to calibrate.
Tell me your thoughts.

I'm not sure, but the filesize is a lot bigger. Like, a lot. Even when you save it as a jpeg, the size is ridiculous.

I had to experiment with cmyk for my current client for whom it is very important that once printed the colors are close to what they look like on screen. I found this color mode was just unpractical. The colors and hsb sliders seemed to behave strangely because the color picker squares at the bottom of the toolbox continue to display in RGB (as well as all the color swatches actually) meaning for certain colors what you have in the squares is not indicative of the color you apply on the canvas. The difference is obvious with the following cyan e.g: H=185 S=100 B=100.
Another thing is my CMYK jpegs didn't display correctly in Firefox last time I checked.
I've never noticed any brush speed difference between cmyk and rgb however. Perhaps like you said your rgb is faulty and updating your cs4 would solve that.

Try Lab mode instead?

Arshes Nei:I think I've tried lab mode before, but is there really a difference between lab and RGB?

SouMeng For me most of my colors seems the same as I see them, I also don't know why but I feel more at home painting on CMYK it's strange really to me how a color mode would give me different results in how I paint. Then again it maybe as you said and it's the faulty RGB in my CS4.

FraserMcT None of my files are ridiculously big, especially my JPEGS. Perhaps your resolution for the jpegs and files are to high?

I know it was mentioned here before on CA but here's another post pretty much saying the same info on Lab mode: http://forums.biorust.com/adobe-photoshop/2809-need-information-lab-mode-photoshop.html

Yes, there is. It deals better with color values, more the way we see them. For instance one should avoid using the desaturate function in RGB but do it in Lab mode. Off the top of my head, there's this post (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=2022288&postcount=7) and its follow-up (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=2022293&postcount=8) by Chris Beatrice.

Looking at your DA I would say that's because you seldom use the most chromatic colors of the RGB gamut in your paintings. The more chromatic the color the more discrepancy between cmyk and rgb. There's a little side-by-side comparison here (http://www.impressionsinprint.ca/cmyk-vs-rgb.php).

Edit: Just saw Arshes Nei's post.
