I haven't given it a fair run, but I saw the first ep and wasn't really impressed. They took everything that made the movie cool and either took it away or made it too exsesive.

The really cool periodical Japanese music is no more. It is now Japanese metal. The Demons in the movie were cool, now they are a little weak. The first big demon is mecha?! In edo Japan?

My friend said it did get a lot better as it went along, but I am still really skeptical.

I've only seen the first episode also... I thought it was good myself. The art level was quite high for a tv series and it kept with the bloody/mature nature. So.. I thought it looked great, but I really can't say anything about the series without knowing the story.

The only current/recent animes I'm really blown away by are Naruto and One Piece, which are both absolutely amazing.
