I've made some minor changes to the mech and I drew it's pilot. Also, i made a viking that i didnt want to look like a typical viking but rather something that had a rock and roller feel.

Nice work man!

Hey Carlo... Awesome art show last night! It was great to see you again after more than 10 years! We'll definitely have to get together again.

So is it cool if I try and model one of your mechs?

C'ya!

You are great at what you do; you're an inspiration. I hope you keep up with your work, I'm never tired of seeing it--ever. If you stop, I'm seriously going to start crying.

I'm raping and pillaging the forums for more of your work. Your female mech drives me insane. It's so... lovely.. Keep up the work, and when I see something which should be commented on, I'll try my best to point it out.

More great stuff Carlo

The mech pilot is excellent. I like his attitude.

These are really nice. Very funny exaggerations as well, like the huge zipper :) Did you use any reference for the faces or attitudes ? because they have a very realistic attitude, it's very well done anyhow.

Btw, this is a question that will maybe provoce some or many will disagree, but it has bugged me for a while. Why does Blizzard show off all those crappy sketched and bad wallpapers with 100's of errors, when they actually have a lof of nice artists as yourself ? -I'm just curious, since I love their games and their 3d work, and the style itself could work a lot better if a more talented artist would create the linework and paintings which they are releasing.

actually, the gangsta guy is an amalgam of the guys I grew up with and he had no reference for the face or pose, my brother says he looks like me though. the pack is loosely based off of military style packs. The idea for the big zipper came from looking at 12" toy soldier, I noticed that the zippers on his costume were entirely to big to be to scale.

 sweetness these are great. I agree with Evil maybe a tutorial or something. Are you sketching them on paper first or all in Painter or Photoshop? I like how you can still see the lines underneath.

Great work, great style. the thing that gets me about the pilot is that his uniform is believable (apart from him bein topless). This is how mech pilots uniforms would probably look.
The viking dude's my pick of the 2. brilliant stance and expression. love the rocker look.

Hey Carlo,

I was gonna try to say something really clever or poignant. Then I thought maybe I'd tell you something needs adjusting. But I just kept staring at them and going "I love these" damn it I love all you stuff. So there... I love um" they’re “carlicios” how’s that for clever?

Peace

The first one reminds me of an ancient Mongol with tribal tattoos. Awesome design.

The second one doesn't say Viking to me very much. I may be wrong, but my general impression was that Vikings, by ethnic blood, were generally blonds.

i really like your technique and the detailed designs.
did you use to teach production design at associates?
i think i took your class there a couple of years ago.

Ah. I put my finger on it! I know the designs don't have any relation, but the Viking reminded me of Remy from Street Fighter 3:Third Strike. Awesome game, but I suck at it.

One of the most important things to me when I look at any kind of artwork is style. What style it is, and how much it has. Your work has style to SPARE!!!! Your color choice, fashion sense, attitude (of your characters, as well as anything else you draw/paint). All around your work is just "smart". It's the kind of work that would be passed over if there wasn't a lot of knowledge behind it. Beatiful. You can't post enough as far as I'm concerned.

P.S. - The Viking? BAD ASS BAD ASS BAD ASS. I love it.

I love your characters and your personal style. Also, I´m sure you work fast, getting really good results. Awesome.

Wow, it does look like remy, i was going for axl rose but remy is good, wasn't Eric the red a viking? The tatoo was done with some tatoo flash from a friend of mine on a multiply layer with about 70% opacity. I went for the red hair cause i pictured him running through snow and wanted the contrast.

your work really earned that 5 star rating. when ive seen it yesterday my girlfriend had to stand up from bed cause i had to show her these fantastic characters!

these are CHOICE man!

the designs are very fresh. that viking has a definate rock star look to him, like the son of a rich viking king or something, hes got the "im a punkass, but i can still bring the pain" look to him.

awsome stuff, cant wait to see the mech =)

Come on, Carlo, the viking is great! :D He doesn´t remind me of Remy from SF.
And his clothes are fantastic.

Hi Carlo, I was a student of yours at AI during your last quarter there (I was the guy who incessantly irritated you about the Kevin Chen references, which BTW, have been a GREAT help for life drawing, thanks again). And despite having been a student of yours, I still can't take the awe out of awesome. The work that you do is just too damn good. I am sitting in Kevin Beardslee's class right now for his character modeling class and I had just nagged him to get you to post more artwork, and...viola (props to Kevin)!

BTW, whenever that book of yours comes out--hopefully soon--you can count on TWO copies sold!

carlo- it's humbling.
you're master of those little details like the skewed headset holder on the pilot.
i have trouble focusing on my work in the studio when i try to "memorize" your renderings.
great inspiring art.

looking at your pics somemore..got a question for ya:
when you paint, do you lay in the medium tones first, and go from there? or start with the darks?
im just starting out with this whole "color" thing hehe, and i start with the medium tones first....but it seems like its a very inefficient, cuz it seems like im usually going back over it again ..and again....

anyway, any insight would be much appreciated =)

carlo
February 23rd, 2004, 12:38 PM
I lay down a medium dark, then the darks. This is followed by mid-tones and finally highlights and I use flat brushes. I'm constantly pushing, pulling and re-emphasizing throughout the process. As for the details, it all comes down to continously asking "Who is this guy?" and letting the visuals tell that story.

this stuff is awsome carlo!!
it freaks me out how similarly we work... the way i do my color concepts at work is almost identicle to the way i assume you work.. i even do the multiplied tattoos and i have an extensive refference directory of iggy pop. hah!

keep posting man,, i cant get enough.

The mech pilot is nice, but, pilots don`t wear stuff like that.
It makes the body movement limited.

The viking`s hammer doesnt seems to fit with the shoulder.

How do you draw hands so well?

Thank you for the compliments. there is no shortcut to drawing hands well but i draw the overall form rather than concentrate on the fingers. for the pilot's outfit I used this ref and modified it.
