it is an intense and grueling process of trial and error. Once i have a basic sense of the brush i want i go through 100 minor variations to find the exact style im looking for. I then select each individual brushstroke i make and adjust the hue and value accordingly.

Well in my defence the origional sketch looked a lot more stylish and like it actually had 2 arms. Oh well new style not sure about it. 45 mins Photoshop.
(anyone want to buy me a scanner or a tablet so I can stop using the mouse  ).

having issues with the light source, and wishing for a softer piece of charcoal. Experimenting with a new charcoal pencil (usually just use graphic, but the charcoal is nice and dark...tho not as dark as I'd have liked today...could add more layers...but nah). bailed on the background, tho if you look you can see the rough. bailed on the snowboard..but if you look, you can see awesome shading and kickin' graphics on it... I think I might actually erase everything and go back and color it. This black and white stuff just isn't doing it for me right now, other than the studies...anyway...rambling. picture...here.
http://members.lycos.co.uk/oldstormy/snowboard.jpg
okay, actually went back and colored this. got rid of the lodge because didn't wanna do anything with it. oil pastels (I have a hard time lightening them once I've gone dark..any suggestions?), a little bit of chalk pastel to try and lighten up spots in the oil..didn't work great, and correction fluid...next time will use a liner brush with that.

Just a quickie - you can probably detect that I know nothing of snowboarding ( or what the youth might consider 'stylish' ).

Schwoassa - I like that very much! Good job.
Tjoints - Very nice..!

stormy - Ive started to use white acrylic on top of things to get highlights.. you can also try drawing on one paper on top of another and scratching through to the next one to get a highlight. Nice experiment!
toinjoints- cool goggles.

oh man this was so crappy. i concentrated on the silhouette for a long time and i didn't know how to actually paint the outfit.
i worked for more than one hour.
it doesn't fit to the topic anymore, really, but i spent so much time with it.. i want to show you anyway.

eyebooger - LOL, it's supposed to be upside down; see the tops of the trees along the bottom? Hmm, guess I didn't illustrate it well enough. Anyways, he flew off a cliff upside down, hense the 'ops!'
heh, love your ninja boarder!!

This was my first time using painter. It took me a few hours to do because i was trying to figure out how it worked. It seems to run slower than photoshop though. Anyone know if this is how it is for them as well? Well here it is.

and sheldon v nice took me a sec to notice that the random iceicles at the top were coming off the back of the board and not random snow being thrown up from the upside down pic =p

Here's mine. 45 minute sketch in pencil, colors done in Photoshop with a terrible mouse.
http://www.shawnadomanis.com/dsg/dsg361.jpg
Morr - That is a very cool, cyberpunkish design.
Schwoassamoasda - Really nice, metalic suit there. You got the bindings pretty much right too.
toinjoints - Nice first post. Welcome. Did you paint from a reference or use the reference as tracing paper?
Matt Dixon - Nice sketch. One thing about snowboarding, and youthful outfits, the gear is usually two pieces — jacket and baggy pants. Just a heads up.
Hunger_Artist - Wow. She'd be pretty cold out there. Nice effect using the sketch of a sketch.
Railboy - Ahahah. That's great.
Sheldon - Yeah, it was confusing the angle of the picture until you explained. Also, his board and the feet are not in the same perspective, otherwise good sketch. You really dislocated your shoulder? Wow. Sorry to hear that if so. I twisted my ankle last Monday, but then kept doing jumps... not the smartest thing to do.
eyebooger - Man that is just awesome. I love it. Your pencil work always shines through and when you add color, it really pushes the picture out. Sorry that you have never seen snow. It's the best thing ever man. Where do you live?
Matt Smith - Really nice pose. Well, I am new to painter too. It seems slow too, but I also have an older comptuer and no tablet, so I have two stirkes against me.
Til tomorrow...

Not really much of an outfit here. I couldn't pull stuff together tonight so just ended up colouring the little bits I had. My husband actually wears a one piece snowboarding outfit (with a yellow belt!) that's the yellow, orange and grey/brown in my pics. I don't know whether to laugh or cry...
http://amerasu.randomleft.com/ca/feb21_04_snowboard.jpg
dingoegret - I really like the illustration/fashion style. It looks good to me. The colours too.
Stormy - Futuristic outfit! Looks spacey :)
bernstein - I don't think your pic is crappy. I think the silhouette idea is cool and it worked well too.

No color yet, but here's my submission. Wasn't going to do today's, but ended up sketching it while I was trying to work on something else. Since I couldn't get it colored to my liking with a mouse I inked the sketch and rescanned it.

Not much detail for a costume concept, but here it is. (I know - the board's perspective is wacked.)

Phuzion - That is badass!! Very solid. And yes, they are about the hottest thing ever! Good one.
U2DeathBear - I agree with Sheldon. Very nice form and stance. And I agree with you about the legs, but they just need to be lengthened, that's all. One thing about snowboards, if you don't know. An ideal board should come to your chin if you are standing up straight. Good work!
