I'm aware that there are at least one or two besides me who are deaf and/or hard of hearing. I'm aware that there is a Closed Captioning option for the TAD's free online learning sessions once a month. The only drawback is that once it goes live, captioning is not available until the whole thing is recorded. I'm assuming live captioning is expensive compared to having a volunteer transcribe the entire session for us.

So, what I'm asking is for any of you who are hard of hearing and need closed captioning to be able to understand the sessions better without being left behind is to introduce yourselves on here as a head count and make yourselves known to the TAD folks that you want closed captioning to be transcribed for your future educational and/or professional development.

Besides, I can't be the only one here with this problem.

Thanks,

-A

Well I'm not part of TAD but I'm hard of hearing. So no, you're not alone!

That's cool. Montreal, eh? You're only a few hours from me. Thanks for making yourself heard. I find it very important for people like us to be able to have some kind of accessibility to information and lessons to learn more and improve ourselves in this field.

Welcome LordLouis. Glad to see you on here. I'm not part of TAD, either but was curious because there has to be a way for people like you to be able to learn from TAD material and succeed from there. Or anything besides TAD, of course.

Arish/LordLouis, how did you lose your sense of hearing?

*raises hand* deaf kid here too! :steph:

I don't mind waiting until the whole session is recorded and captions are added... until now I didn't even know they were available. This rocks big time!

Same here. I was accepted to TAD but didn't go ahead with the classes as I wasn't sure if I'd be able to deal with the online video classes/discussions etc and didn't want to put down €23,000 without being sure first. Are there any deaf/hard of hearing people in the classes at the moment?

Whoops, didn't check this thread for a while ... I was born with a hearing loss - must be genetic because my brother is deaf too. I hear well enough to get around but not well enough to follow most videos without some kind of subtitles or closed-captioning.

Would love to know how hard of hearing TAD students are faring - can't wait for speech recognition software to reach the point where I can get videos to be subtitled automatically ... ahhh someday. (Yes I know YouTube is testing a beta version of this, but it works about as well as a cross between Babelfish and 1,000 monkeys on typewriters.)

I know what you mean. I'm curious about the subtitling process on TAD's courses, but then there's Youtube's version I'm aware of. I usually rely on close captioning when watching DVDs.

Right now, I can't afford the TAD courses at the moment because I'm focused on working at the local print shop job saving up to get myself a new Mac Mini to replace the old G4 in order to continue my digital work seamlessly. It's a good thing we got an Apple reseller shop in Burlington, VT for this reason.
