How to prepare smooth plastic surface for painting

I was planning to use acrylics on top of old CD coasters or cassette tape. Would acrylics stick on easily or will they eventually peel/rub off if I don't do any preparation to the surface?

If prep work is needed, how should I go about roughing the surface?

i think itll stick to cassettes but not cds cause i know if you paint on glass you can peel it really easily. maybe if you scratch it up enough it'll stick?

Well, I don't know for CDs but I used to paint small Citadel plastic models with acrylics. The paint holds fine if you glaze it after drying.

Awesome, that's what I was thinking. Cause "coarse-ing" up each piece seems like it would take forever.

Just rough up the surface with some steel wool- then wash it and let it air dry. It will only take a few swipes! Paint will stick.
