painter and photoshop cant be compared to each other, their made for different purposes.. in short, painter is the best for drawing and the concept art you see on this site, and photoshop is good for all othe stuff you can think of...
i say, dont choose between the 2.. get em both.. cuz even those paintings are edited with photoshop (i.e. the touchup, colour finalizing etc.)

Try doing a search and you'll find several discussions on the merits of each program.
Painter is the most advanced application for painting and drawing, providing us with ove 400 brush variants installed with Painter 8, more on the second CD, and endless numbers we can create to do just about anything we want, plus more available on third party book CD's and available to download from the Web. In addition, it has many other features, including the Movie feature, not found in Photoshop.
Photoshop is better for color management/color tweaking before printing, and for some other technical manipulation of images.
Your decision will depend on what you want to do and how much you can afford to spend.
Owning both is the best of both worlds and a lot of artists do use both to complete a final image.

um, Painter 8 is the newest version of the actual Painter series. Painter 10 is something totally different I think.

I checked out Fengs Enviormental Design video and noticed that he paints in photoshop. I mean I guess Photoshop is fine if your simply coloring a line drawing. To me it seems like the advantage of Painter lies in the brush effects you can get, like chalk etc. I dont see why you would need it over PS for coloring.

I think Feng pretty much has converted to Painter now. In his latest DVDs, he uses it for nearly everything (there is some editing done in Photoshop).

Hi,
Painter is used for coloring, painting, drawing, linework, and anything that can be done with a drawing or painting brush variant.. over 400 of them in the default Painter 8 brush library, more on the second CD, and loads available to download from the Web and on third party book CD's.
Collectively, all drawing and painting "tools" are referred to in Painter as "brushes" as are brush categories referred to as "brushes".
The only real tool used with these brush categories and brush variants is the Tools palettte's Brush tool.
In Painter, the term "painting" is used to refer to making a brushstroke with any brush variant, or painting a brushstroke. It's not used, for instance, only for fine art painting.
