After enjoying my Alien Quadrilogy DVDs so much, I wanted to make a little tribute piece to my favorate movie of all time; the original 1979 'Alien.' I wanted to remain true to Giger's original design aside from a few liberties. I also used a few references of Sigorny Weaver as Ripley, but they were fairly poor so I'm not really satisfied with her face. This is really just a display of my appreciation more than anything else. Feel free to post yours too.
This really didn't take long and i probably won't go back to fix anything. Comments are appreciated though, even if it's just for me to be able to keep them in mind. Anyway, if you have an alien or two, share'em.

Uuh! Aliens! You have done pretty good work. You can handle your technic. That's easy to notice. Especially if it's done quicly. Next time you could make the alien pose look more aggressive. Now it just stands there like a nice fatherfigure ;) Girls pose is much better.
I can't draw aliens, but maybe some flowers or butterflies will do... (hehehe!)

looks good, nice and ominous, think the straight areas let it down a bit, torso/arms/chest/tonguething look a little stiff (makes it appear flatter than it is) but like the detailing on the head
old speedpaint (hoping the finished rule doesn't apply - just wanted to join in the xenofun), took a few liberties on design hehe

dinfet: you may want to try making your images smaller memory wise. This one is 850k! if you have Image Ready, put it in there and optimize it... should take it down to about 60k depending on the quality level. Anyway, it's a really nice start.
Awesome thread idea ;p can't wait to see what developes. Peace

hmmm.... Phuzion it shows 47.1 kb for me. If this is the case I will optimize in different manner.
edit: degads, I dont know whatt to do on my site its not a bitmap when I save to my comp from web it converts to bitmap and then is a large file size, other wise its is small in jpg...
When I save it, I use photoshop and use the save to web, which sets the rez to 72 dpi and I dont have A large file.
I do have slow web space.

That SpaceJockey's amaizing. You've really addopted Giger's style quite well. I love the biomechanical landscape as well.
It makes me really hope that the Alien 5 rumors are true. That Ridley Scott is returning and would focus on the Alien's origin and the makers of the Derelict ship. For me, seeing the Derelect ship on twisted organic landscape from the first movie was the moment I knew that the movie was different than anything that had been previously released. It actually lived up to the adjective "alien."

I agree. In the Quadrilogy, one of the producers, David Giler (or was it Walter Hill? the producer that smoked constantly) when discussing what he would like to see if there were to be a next film, he said It would have to show more of the 'homeworld' and possibly what happened to the race of the spacejockies. The first Alien is one of the best looking DVDs I now own, and it's from a film more than 20 years old!
Unfortunately, with AVP coming out, I feel the future of another quality Alien film being released is small. If one does come out, I pray that Ripley's character is finally given a rest, or only have a small ammount of screen time. Give Winona Rider's sexy android 'Call' a chance to shine, somthing...ANYTHING but Sigourney again!:machinegu

Yeah. I hate the idea of an Alien vs. Predator movie. It's the cinematic equevelent to two kids arguing about one's dad being able to beet up the other one's dad. What I hate is just how much they're completely degrading Ridley Scott's, H R Giger's, and Dan O'Bannon's artistic vision just so they can cash in on the combined profit potential of two franchises that have both lost momentum due to age (or redundancy in Predator's case). What I especially hate is that the Alien is pretty much reduced to cannon fodder for a lesser monster like the predator. You have one of the most revolutionary creature concepts in film history fighting with a stomping, roring Lou Ferrigno with foam-latex padded muscles and a face that looks like a mix between a tarantula and a dinosaur. In the end, the alien series can survive much better without predator killing it's artistic credability. What future does predator have? Yet another predictable movie set in the present where he hunts a body-builder with a machine gun?
...And yes, Winona Rider is awesome. It's too bad they made her an android though. If she took a took a lead role, I don't think you have the same sense of danger as you would with someone who was human. Of course that discounts Ripley #8 too. I recomend that you check out the Darkhorse graphic novel "Aliens Apocalipse: Destroying Angels." It has some great art and sort of explores the idea of what kind of civilization the Jockies had.

I agree. An Alien vrs Predator movie is a horrible idea.
At least the games based on that idea have been pretty good for the most part. But a movie? No thanks...
Also, on the space-jockey...one thing to note is that that's not supposed to be what he looks like. The ship and the jockey have been covered with alien hive growth ("Gigerfied") over the years, so they resemble something completely different from what they originally did. What they looked like originally is anyone's guess, though. But I imagine that human bodies and architecture would look a similar way if they were subjected to alien hive colonization over very many years time.

was a great flick, especially the director's cut. but alien3 and alien resurrection were lame, especially the alien clones and the alien baby at the end of resurrection.

it was typically hollywood(although the regisseur was french:D),but for me still good fun sumhow.
sadly it has lost most of it's magic.you can study the alien in each and every detail and that makes it not as interesting anymore.
when i saw the first one,it scared the shit out of me and by the end of the movie i bathed in sweat, letting out a big "sigh" when the alien finally flew into space.
good horror films are where they don't show the monster as much as possible.
http://img1.photobucket.com/albums/1003/fisite/alien_01.jpg
really helps you when drawing an alien to know that there is some kind of human head underneath the brain pan.

I've been a big fan of both film series, their respective comic books, and the avp comics. One story I enjoyed in particular was about a cannibal predator that killed it's own and ate them, along with humans of course. Not just a huge, armed-to-the-teeth, alien hunter, but a psycho too.
I agree that Alien 4 sucked. Predator 2 and Alien 3 sucked only a little less. I wish they'd leave a bit more mystery in there.
The AvP movie has me conflicted (no pun intended). The director (guy that directed Res. Evil) and the storyline (Anartica? Aztecs?) I have problems with. There is a lot of potential for this movie to f*** the series up and a very small chance that it will be successful. The comic books have been entertaining and there are decent stories in there, but Hollywood, like usual, has decided to ignore those and twist it into something with dollar signs stamped all over it. However, I will see it because I've been anticipating it being made into a feature for a long time. But if I see the preds in "bullet time" with metal rock blastin or some gimmicky special effect that has no place in there, I'm walking out.

well said JOATLEY,
and i agree on your judgement of the predator2 and alien3 and 4.
as for the art... i like the cloaking effect you have there, but i do thing that the shoulder cannon is to head on. make it at a slight angle just to give it some dimension.

I actually like Alien3 quite a bit. I didn't at first but it grew on me. It May have not served the series that well in the long run, but it was great movie in it's own right. I recomend to everyone that they check out the special edition that was just released. It's a half hour longer and has a few alternate scenes such as the Alien bursting from an ox instead of a dog and a few others. most importantly though, the story is much fuller and more satysfying. Characters like Golic (the crazy guy) and Junior (guy who tried to rape Ripley) don't just mysteriously disapear. The plot makes much more sense and seems more driven. That's all I can say without giving it away. The movie is literally improved from 2 stars to 4 in my book.
Here are a couple of older images. I apologise in advance for their lesser quality. If anything they serve to show how much difference a couple years make.

Well, thats one theory. However, if you go back and watch the first film, you will see that its just the opposite. The aliens are an extension of the Jocky's technology. The interior of the ship isnt 'hivegrowth' as seen in the reactor in Aliens, but has a definite logic in its organic patterns and shapes including the jocky's biomechanical integration into the chair as if the ship grew from the pilot (or the pilot grew from the ship :)). The outside is also decorated with this biomechanical 'aztec pattern' as (i believe) Ridley Scott called it. But, you might be right... thats the mystery of the whole thing. Maybe in the long run it's better we NOT know all the answers. That's what truly keeps it 'Alien'.

I absolutly hate drawing predator masks. They are such a bitch to draw from the front or 3/4.

Long live AvP. The movie is going to suck balls, but the games and novels are quite good. (along with the whole avp universe)
