DigiPen Institute of Technology, a long-standing pioneer and global leader in the field of digital entertainment higher education, offers graduate and undergraduate degrees in game development, computer engineering, game design and production animation.

Full Time Instructor Position

Key Activities:

• Lecture and teach in a classroom setting on a daily basis.
• Teach fundamentals in character modeling, texturing, rigging and animation using Max and/or Maya.
• Provide technical support for the students with understanding of game-specific challenges, restrictions, and shortcuts.
• Provides technical support for general character rigging processes.
• Teach problem solving – students need to constantly strive via research to optimize, fix and enhance an effective animation pipeline.
• Identifying workflow improvements, providing and directing trouble-shooting efforts for modeling and animation projects.
• Work closely with CG and traditional art faculty to develop an ongoing and constantly improving curriculum that reflects industry trends.
• Study and maintain an understanding of current trends in game and cinematic animation.
• Give creative direction and criticism to students on assignments. This can include character assets, animation and cut scenes during all phases of an animation pipeline.
• Organize and manage time efficiently for multiple classes.
• Grade, critique and input assignment data on a weekly basis.
• Help students to direct and create cut scenes in more advanced projects.
• Act in the capacity of an academic advisor for students.


Essential Requirements:

• At least 7 years experience building, rigging, and animating characters in the role of Character Artist or Animator in a game or cinematic team.
• Highly proficient in modeling, texturing, rigging, animating, lighting and rendering in a major 3D packages (3DS Max and/or Maya).
• Experience developing processes and tools for working with animated characters. This includes experience with game editing tools.
• Experience in scripting (maxscript or melscript).
• Exceptional skill in animating bipeds and multi-legged figures, as well as other organic forms.
• Thorough and solid understanding of animation theory and the principles of animation (squash and stretch, timing, anticipation, staging, appeal, etc.).
• Have a strong understanding of CG lighting techniques.
• Understand shader creation techniques, including multiple UV mapping, AO, Normals and specialty shaders for multi-pass rendering.
• Understand and can articulate how to do advanced UV Mapping and unwrapping of organic forms.
• Very proficient in Photoshop, and compositing software such as Premiere, After Effects or comparable packages.


Desirable:
• Previous teaching experience
• Knowledge of Zbrush and
• experience with MEL scripting
• Experience using and troubleshooting render-farm environments
• BFA degree
