WEBSITE POLL : 800X600 VS. 1024x768

hello there my friends, and welcome to this thread..

ok..im designing my site--but i wasnt sure about the "industry standard" for sizes

what are most of you guys using for your sites as far as screen size?

i guess its good to cater to people on smaller screens--but at the same time its nice to see stuff as big as possible..

i say 1024x768, at least. i think except for public comps at schools and stuff most people have thier res higher than 800x600

as for the standard though, i have no idea

as far as it goes, most people that are going to look at your site will have 1024x728 resolutions...and since it's your own site, it's your call. when I design sites for other people, however, I go by what yahoo and the "bigger" sites use, and that's 800x600. I've found that making your site resizable is the way to go, and my size is a minimum of 800x600.

well my site is 800x600 cuz most of the ppl still have shitty ass comps and you gotta consider that ....so theres my opinion

800x600 since that way you get all bases covered. But try and make it resizable and then it can look good at higher res too.

Imho, if you have a fixed resolution, you gotta think about what users u have browsing your site in the end. Not everyone has a great rig with a big screen. In fact, lots of ppl still have tiny, old screens. Ppl interested in arts probably spend some money on their screens though, and i guess potential clients have huge screens. Now the problem is, if you do a screendesign for 640 X 480, a resolution almost everyone should be ok with, it will look tiny on a 21" monitor with a 1280 X whatever resolution.
I'd say 1024 X 768 because in the end you are making the site for "teh bosses" :D
Or be smart and make it resizable and sacrifice total control. I don't know what flash is capable of though.

I use a laptop and technically I have 1152x768 of viewing space...so I could view a 1024x768 site, but how often do people stretch thier web browser wall to wall on their screen? I'd cover all your bases like dfacto said.

800x600 was years ago, when illustrators/designers and gamers used to have 1024x768.

nowadays gamers and such have a res like 1280x1024 or 1600x1200.

my site is set for 1024x768 if I remember correctly, though the res is smaller to account for the IE menu bar and whatnot. If you think about it, if your site is meant as a portfolio for getting a job, the people you're gonna want to cater to will be running at least 1024x768. If a company is still running 800x600 you probably don't want to work for them anyway as they'll probably pay you in donuts and hugs.

As far as size in concerned though, you do want to consider the fact that larger images take longer to load, so you have to spend more time optimizing them, but it's worth it ;p No 800k images!!

768 x 1024 for me. I'm not willing to comprimise the look of my images as I see them for people on library computers. I figure if someone s seriously concerned with computer imaging of ANY kind, they'll at least have a mediocre monitor that can handle millions of colors at 768 x 1024 resolution.

thats what i was thinking too about not wanting to compromise my ,but how do you guys feel about this:

the bigger the images, the more of a chance someone can steal it a reproduce it.

If the standard is what you want - then run at 800x600 - or make a really sweet resizable website

Seeing as though it will be an artistic website aimed for people who will be aiming to view it, I think that 1024 is fine.

Since most of the people who will view it will either be from here or other forums (and employers). How about just starting up a poll where people can put in their resolution? That way, we can all see what res people use, and adjust from there.
