So far great stuff, guys. It's definitely a topic a lot of people should be able to get ideas for. Hopefully I can work my scanner enough to be able to show you mine. I look forward to seeing the rest!
Morr, there is no reason to 'meh' with that picture. It inspired me to draw my temple guardian--instead of a hulker, it's a more devious creature. And the way you did it makes it seem like an ethereal being... something not tangible. I really enjoy it.
ApricotSoup, I like the idea of an enchanted, posessed set of armour and weaponry. It adds the sense of mysticism like Morr's--something not there, but there, et cetera. Great colours.
0kelvin--that's very good foreshadowing with the hands. You've got it down, and you've given it a great pose. The colours and textures are great. However, there is little thing which, if you look past the pose, irks you. His hand and foot doesn't seem flat on the ground judging by the rocks and wall's corner, touching the ground. But that's a bitty thing--the whole thing is very good!
schmu_20mol, I would never of thought of doing something non-fantasy like. It's great that people can think 'outside the box', so-to-speak. Keep up the work!

This took me far longer than it SHOULD have. I too lost focus on the big picture and paid to much attention to a single detail (rendering the marble). Anyway, here it is...

Schmu-20mol - I know just what you mean. But I do like the modern take on the subject.
Freakt - What program are you doing these in? Maybe we can find a way to get rid of the white pixelated borders around everything.

0kelvin: design's cool :) i find some problems reading depth correctly, though - he seems to be not connected to the floor (a simple shadow and some texture could help) and the reds in the bg bring some pillars in the front a bit too much i think. but i certainly dont want to get in its way :)
morr: this one freaks me out O_O. great style, too.

Morr, i like the way the head turned out, but i think you fellow is a little bit thin :D I'd spent some more time on the torso and the waist, that'd help.
gekitsu, really cool. I can't quite make out what that thing above the right arm is... i know, it might just turn out to be the left arm, but it looks kinda funked.

i'm just getting used to painter. grabbed a random tool and did the best i could (some kind of chalk, dunno the explicit name).
it took me about an hour, because i trashed some ideas first and had problems with the composition. effective working time: 30-45 minutes.
painter is fun, i need to play more around with it :)

DEAR GOD I love you people. *ahem* *clears* throat. I mean...nice work everyone! :D It's always SO inspiring to see how differently people interpret a topic. Some of these pics are so beautiful...Vely Bad Man, Gekitsu...stuff like this reminds me of why I bother to get up in the morning.
Pichuerca - Like the demon, but I have to agree with your brother. Don't quite 'get' what's going on with the pose. If you have to explain what you meant...it's not working.
Evre-Yay! An octopus! Love this pic. Love the fact you put the temple underwater. I'd have never thought of that.

Another piece I worked on today, bit longer about 3 hours in photoshop this time. Thought it would be a nice guardian to a seriously alternative temple, as it's not going anywhere.

Man, living in japan means I'm almost always last! :-( And I rarely get comments.
Hmm... Gonna have to do something abotu that... maybe wake up in the middle of the night and start working on it... :-)
Here's my entry... a Take on the Japanese sense of temple gods and guardians... Like my Cuttlefish image, the layout was done in Photoshop based on reference images, then brought into Painter for the rest...
I wanted to do something with Charcoal, as I've never done that, but ended up giving everything a WASH to smooth it out. It ended up looking like a type of oil painting.
I hope to improve, and would appreciate any suggestions you have!

sic8sic : Thanks! Wow. I'm happy, I made something someone else enjoys! :D
Yes, the stones are heavily influenced by "Spirited Away". I LOVE that movie. I saw it it's first day out here (in Japan.) But there are many stones similar to these all around Japan. Sometimes different designes, but usually about the same.
As for living in Japan. This is my 2nd time living here (this time for good.) I have a job at a university here doing multimedia / computer work as well as the occasional art / animation job. I'm trying to convince them to buy me a copy of Painter for the new fiscal year. ;)
Thanks again!

No. I got this job before I moved here. I did a lot of animation work (mostly for myself) back in the US, and a guy here was looking for a multimedia person with teaching experience (I taught English in japan for 3 years, previously.) So he contacted me and I ended up here again. :-) So, no... didn't just move here. And yes, it's expensive, but the pay is good.
Sorry I don't know those names, but perhaps because I just started hanging out here in the Forums. Hope to meet everyone soon!
Cheers -- Jds

This is an idea I actually woke up with today, not exactly a creature design, but it does fit as a temple guardian.
I was going for a hawkprey-style sketch, not sure how well that worked but I'm fairly happy with it, although I am toying with the idea of having him floating.
Crits welcome.
http://users.bigpond.net.au/laing/dsg/temple-guardian.jpg
[edit]Here's the floating version, which I prefer:

Wow! Some really impressive pics here today.

I had this gargoyle guy already sketched from a different pic never finished so I stuck him here instead. He looks guardian like.
I like your Japanese temple, JDShaffer. It's soft and peaceful, plus your guardian guys remind me a bit of the little statue from Spirited Away. I don't have much in the way of suggestions other than to say that perhaps your painting could benefit from some more clearly defined lines (a little detail). Anyway, I like it. It's a tranquil temple :)

Flip- very nice. I like the floating one better too. maybe a bit more emphasis on the crucifix. Don't know what you mean by 'hawkprey style sketch' but I like it.
Hungerartist- love the mood and texture. Nice use of the widescreen effect.
Gekitsu- great!!! Awesome idea (a bit more mature and more based in actual mythology than some) executed very very well. Maybe a little bit more contrast and lights and darks to real move the eye around but I love it.

it's friggin late. I'm tired, and.....n/m. Been busy the past few days but wanted to get a drawing in (actually in the mood to paint, but no time..and anyway).
Not your standard temple guard, I guess, but not your standard guard. In case you didn't get it. The hand is the guard..and the temple is built into a rock face. Honestly? I wouldn't need a guard to keep me outta there, but hey...it's the first interesting thing that came to mind (what does that say about my mind?)

Hunger_Artist: I really dig this one, it has a very Radiohead feel to it, one of my favorites from you.

Hey everyone. I went more for an undead approach because i was thinking that a temple guardian would be something that is stuck protecting it forever even after it is dead. I want gonna do a full beast but I went with just a portrait instead. Tell me what you think.

wow there's some neat things in here now. Guess I was inspired by giant flightless birds of death. Maybe it's a mayan or aztec temple. I spent about an hour on it, got lots to do on the background and integrating the bird though. Gotta say seeing what some people pop out in an hour here is pretty sweet. Hope y'all like it.
