I was very inspired lately when I learned how BMW runs their automotive design firm. The artists work from 9 to 5 when the bell dings, and they put down their tablets. In an instant their artwork is sent over seas to other BMW firms where the artists just waking up grab their tablets and finish what the other artists started ... This ends up giving them an edge as far as creativity goes, and is also constant 24/7 designing.
I wanted to run with this idea and work from someone else's work... MIKECORRIERO did some amazing thumbnails that inspired me to get designin'! ... and so I did, I inturpreted...
MIKECORRIERO's Thumbnails:
http://pratt.edu/~mcorrier/random/wk1.jpg
My take: I mostly ran with #7 but tried to incorporate a little of everything.

Hey, love this thread. I don't think my pathetic 16 year old skills are up to fully realizing the potential of your thumbs, but I'll try anyway. Heres what I got:

Really need to work on shading and vehicle design (and spelling, but that's another matter). Anyway, keep up the good work and ignore my low self esteame... esteem ...er... how ever the hell you spell that. We really need a spell check function in this place.
Ok, I'll shut up now.

I didn't want this to drop off the board, i'm really learning a lot from everyone on how they approach design.
Here's some sketches I'm doing for a project that involves a giant fantasy-style machine spider powered by magic. I just wanted to throw some ideas on paper, havn't started diggin up ref. yet. My biggest problem so far is that the machine is supposed to have 17 legs. . .I'm still working on that one.
http://img5.photobucket.com/albums/v14/grendalmage/Rick/spiderthumb.jpg
oh, that thing in the middle was a slight deversion into some sort of spider-like vehicle. . .six wheels that move and adjust depending on terrain.
young paddy1
March 11th, 2004, 06:21 AM
quick question Mr Hershey why 17 legs it's an annoying prime number you can't divide it into groups of anything conveniant
rick_hershey
March 11th, 2004, 10:09 AM
It wasn't my choice for 17 legs, the client insisted. It's just my job to try and work it out.
young paddy1
March 11th, 2004, 12:59 PM
All I can imagine is two wheels made of eight legs each and a tail dragger for stability, or am I just obsessed with single axle vehicles?
When its walking eight of the legs could be used as a shield for the top the seventeenth as some sort of feeler.?
Oh and why the engine isn't it suposed to be magic?
rick_hershey
March 11th, 2004, 02:34 PM
Well the picture is for an rpg book, and to be honest doing rpg illustrations is a lot like doing a dsg. . .you have make a picture based on very few details. The reason for the engine is simple, it was built as a construct- a working machine just like anything else- the magic element comes into play to explain those small details like "power source" and "repairing". . .the wonders of fantasy.
The thing with this is that they want a "cool looking picture", and I can get away with not proving the details of how this thing would actually work. Sammy has great design for his machines 'cause they all look like they would work. . .with this pic I don't think anybody cares (it has 17 legs!) Plus it's fantasy, the style has to look primitive- steampunkish- and of course look like a huge spider.
I'm going to start doing reference work on this so the machanical aspects will be cleaned up much more.

i would love to be a active member of this thread artistically, but i have such a limited amount of server room it won't be happening. anyway, i have a few questions for the pros here. first off, what is the advantage to thumb-nailing over drawing quick full sized stuff? also, do you guys have problems with drawing stuff over and over? when i draw say, an apc as concept art, its all fine and stuff, but when i draw it again i always add and change things around. ill finish something, like it for a week and hate it after day 8. anyway, keep it up guys, i love seeing your stuff!

I wish you'd join in Legato, you have some mad inking skilz and I know you can do bots :D
I'm used to thumbnails from my ID schooling... basically I can do up to 100 thumbnail designs in the time it takes to do a fully inked and painted image ... so since my focus is design rather than rendering quality or art I enjoy taking that extra time to go ahead and fully realize a design with thumbs. It is tough sometimes to draw something and then draw it over, but if you really like the design it's not as hard to finalize it.

You learn to appreciate thumbnailing when you realize that 90% of your ideas are dumb or unworkable. Dumb thumbnails are good, because that means you got it out of your system and nobody else ever needs to see it. The most you wasted on the dumb ideas was about 4 or 5 minutes each. Now you pick your favorites and develop those, and show your faves to the client.
If you let the client pick from your thumbnails you run the very real risk of him picking all the really bad ones, so don't let him see your sketchbook ;)

sammy,i think you can help me most on this issue(but others might aswell suggest something):whenever i draw a bot i don't know how to attach the legs to his body.as you can see on that bot drawn i've no idea how to attach the legs and also how to connect the joints with each other without ruining his stability.i think that's the thing preventing me most from creating working bots.thanx in advance for helping me.:)

Carnifex: Seriously the best thing you can do to learn mechanics is to actually build some. I grew up constructing gas-powered remote-control cars, helllicopters, etc.
If it's at all afordable go get a kit, with something like a gas-powerd remote car you get to build it from ground up, you get to see the articulations.
Also look at hellicopters, check out the rotaries and hydrollics ... the rotary part of a hellicopter is so small you can almoast put your arms around it, but it's so strong it can lift a multiton chopper ... not only that it can support it and maneuver it in complex ways (that's 20% a real-live mech right there)
Toys are also a great resource, go get a transformer/gundam/stikfa/bionicle anything with loads of articulations, they're just tiny robots that have to have the same ranges of movement but not actualy be motorized.
You have to think of the human body, and then what you'd have to provide extra for hard mechanical movement (toys will show you this) ... for instance in a gundam toy there's an extra 2 articulatons for the elbow, in the new 20th Century Optimus Prime there's 4 articulations in the sholder.
I have some JVC hydrolic/articulation pamphlets from the local plant, I'll scann that shyt in, it helps me a ton to look at all the construction equipment.

for 200 bucks you can get a perfect grade gundam model kit which starts at the exoskeleton and then builds out.

heres a leg iso
http://incolor.inetnebr.com/legato/Art%20Scans/Concepts/Leg%20Concept.jpg
heres a light gunship i just bsed together, and...
http://incolor.inetnebr.com/legato/Art%20Scans/Concepts/Light%20Gunship%20Concept.jpg
heres a hull detail that i ran out of room on :P (i like the first one better)
http://incolor.inetnebr.com/legato/Art%20Scans/Concepts/Light%20Gunship%20Hull%20Detail%20Concept.jpg
anyway, hope you like it. also, you may notice i use a ton of hydraulics instead of actual "motors" for movement. i prefer hydraulics for 2 reasons. first, the complexity just adds to its coolness, and also, i think they are far more realistic. i don't see a axle driven engine as having enough torque to move a mech well... thats just me

insanely impressive legato, you got a major future in mechanical concepts. And you're getting great at laying out your grids to work from, glad you got a chance to join in
These articulation experements will help you a lot to, I know I have a mental library of every joint I've ever drawn. it's mega helpfull just to doodle some out whenever you can.
Keep support in mind as well, hydrollics have a tendency to bend when pressure that isn't perpendicular to their movement is applied. Like having only muscles and no bones.
And skeletons or exo-skeletons for that matter aid in the overall design.
here's a collection of reference photographs, check out the bulk that's usually around hydrollics.
mechanical ref (http://www.securevirtualpages.com/~sammyha/onlineforums/machinery/)
check this book out, it's been mega helpfull for me, it's got some free pages online.

I agree with Mike your skills are worth more than $20 (important part is that you enjoyed doing it), and as far as mechanics go you should try and find some real freelance - you're young too... boy we're all in trouble.
a Mechanical thread would be awesome... but arrgggg...:crosseyed I'm workin' on my Thesis ( :coffee: ) and wont be uploading any of it's art untill I'm finished.... can we wait 8 weeks?!?! :D I could go hardcore into it then.

Fun concept, nice to see you ran with an idea.
I think you should make the tires more interesting if you ink it, they got the Tonka plastic wheels look. Wouldn't be hard to fix just find some ref and ink over it.
I don't have any images but there's an actual pivotal rotating rod/axil - They used to have them in old Technic sets.
Hellicopters have them. They're capable of rotating and keeping an articulate rotation at a bend.
One of those would make a great axil to beef up its underside.
(nice inking too, if you would make your lines thinner it would have more impact)
once again I really like how thought out your greebles are, with mechanical design it's always inticing to add some dots here, a slash there, a panel over there ... great to see someone keep it clean, don't lose that.
Main Loop: In a way you just gotta love it, Look at Legato's stuff.. it's obviouse that he's thought it thru - That he's either researching a lot or has an engeneering mind with a library of mechanical articulations in his head.
Legato
April 2nd, 2004, 05:47 AM
actually, this has only been leveled, not inked :P. sorry just had to get that out of the way. anyway, for me the biggest subconscious influence i think in my young childhood would be legos and technic sets. i had huge cardboard boxes of them and they helped allot. especially technic stuff. even a simple set can do tons of stuff. other than that, right now i talked to a few people for the mod and they love it. i need to work on a second revision today and somehow figure in suspension (which i foolishly forgot) and actual turning wheels... i was going to keep these like tank tracks and just have one side rotate faster/slower but now i don't think they would turn fast enough... so yeah... the shocks are going to be a tough one, but thats what comes with the job i guess! thanks again for your support!
Sammy
April 2nd, 2004, 01:08 PM
Technics rule, those were my first dose of engeneering. Sucks that lego doesn't really make 'em anymore, just incorporates their pieces here and there in packages : \
I never got my hands on the Starwars Guardian technic set, the thing rolled up in a ball and when you rolled it across the floor a trigger snaped and the robot poped up ready for action.
(Ooops my bad communication, I meant the inked chair ... I used to make my lines really thick. Thinner lines are the difference between an illustrative look and a designed/technical look... check out how thin brasshorse's lines are http://www.wildpixels.com/brasshorse/ )
young paddy1
April 2nd, 2004, 03:17 PM
only a couple of things I can see that are dodgy with that design are all around the wheels the way you have them set actually increases the likelyhood of roll over and raises the centre of gravity, if you made the tyres more spherical you could use a spring like that on a clothes peg as the suspension, an external oleo would work for shock absorbsion.

Legato
April 2nd, 2004, 06:53 PM
oh, btw, i forgot to mention how power is supplied to the wheels. it isn't through a belt or a weird drive shaft. i was thinking that the front wheels would power themselves. i think there big enough to actually have a motor inside of them... the back could be conventionally powered, but the front would have the motor inside of it.
