Round 85 :: Magic
Topic
Magic. So many ways to describe it because let's say for example you said "Lilnebo is magic" then you would of course be right ;P
As usual, be creative, push yourself and have fun
Thanks Agrovent for the suggestion on "blood magic" just made it a bit more open :)
Enjoy

Trying hard to think of stuff that everyone will enjoy and I am thinking teen challenge should be a bit different from all the other challenges. Everything else is pretty specific so I want to keep TC as something a bit more relaxing and personal. Keeping it open as possible If you guys have any ideas throw them in the suggestions thread :D ----> Topic Ideas (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=146413)
Deadline
Sunday, May the 9th, 2010
IMPORTANT
1. Add a border around your image with your name and the topic, like they do with the other of the week challenges.
2. Please use the attachment manager, it helps preserve the images to forever and beyond.
3. Mark your final as final.
Good Luck everyone and Hope you have fun! If you have any ideas for where the teen challenge should go then please either PM me or post it in the suggestions thread.

just brainstorming some ideas. i am thinking of either focusing on some kind of sorcerer, or on something that would be summond (spell or deamon ect) in from a first person view.

Agrovent:
Two things.
The drawing of the hand is unsuccessful: it does not read structurally or spatially and as a central figure within the composition it is bringing the entire image down. This is a basic drawing problem, the edges of the forms you are describing do not relate to each other in a way that creates an integral whole. This is especially clear in the second iteration of your image where the lines describing the hand have been smoothed and generalized.
The strings extending from the hand are spatially and compositionally problematic. Spatially, you have established a good sense of atmospheric perspective within the horde at the bottom of the composition, but it is contradicted by the bold lines of the string intersecting them at various depths. The strings should follow the same rules as the horde, lighter/lower contrast further way. Compositionally, i question the placement of the strings. It seems that you have settled on an instinctual solution, which is often fine. However as an illustration that is *constructed*, it may be useful to consider the use of the lines as a design problem. How would the image be effected if you had a string reaching into the foreground of the horde, as opposed to clustered in the mid-ground?

thanks Rarebit! i wish i had seen this earlier, before i went further with the piece, but i think i can still apply what you've mentioned, (with relation to the hand's proportions in particular)
and looking back, i really feel like the two middle strings should venture further into the foreground, in any case, i've removed the strings for now, being that i wanted this to be about "necromancer" magic and not "master of puppets" which was the first reaction of several people who saw it...
i need to find a way to really tie the theme in again, it sort of got lost in the development of the piece
still a wip obviously...
edit- LOL the one on the right totally looks like Billy Corgan > http://i50.tinypic.com/29f9hc4.jpg

gorgeous jatari!
as far as coloring, the armor isn't standing out enough to be interesting yet, i think its more a mater of rendering the rest of it as much as his legs.. not sure, the colors seem more interesting in the blue version than in the green to me..
maybe there was just more contrast in the blue version?
edit- also, the staff currently seems at an odd angle with relation to his hand, like the bottom is retreating into the "vortex" bg design- not sure it this was intended
i know its a wip, so im just saying this because it catches my eye; his head no longer reads well, need to pull the skin tones out of the bg
good luck man! cant wait to see it further along

Final. I messed up and don't really feel like I've got enough time to redo it.
Summoning the Tengu. Not at all accurate to mythologies, but it makes for a pretty cool concept, in my opinion.

Okay, so here is my final, final ever in teen challenge! I just wanted to say thank you to everyone you've been awesome and don't stop painting always keep pushing yourself! TODAY IS MY 20TH BIRTHDAY! Good luck everyone!
CONCEPT: For this guy I thought of this final being a self-portrait, so it's myself in transformation and how Teen Challenge has helped me transform as a digital artist!
Again thank you guys for making this an awesome experience!

I'll be back from time to time to give advice, I just can't participate, but that's what makes it teen challenge! I'll mostly be participating in enviro and creature design which should be fun!
Platingard: put it up and push! Even if it's not in time you'll have an awesome piece!
