The terrible Twins are at it again....

Destroyed a certain sketch for the WIP sorrdy.

I selected a variation on the fourth rough concept.
I decided to make Dan take a distant onlooker non dominant perspective and focus on the villain action.

Afterall, everyone know's who Dan is allready ;P

When I read the potential titles, the Twins just jumped out at me and I immediately got a Sci-Fi vibe off of it. Being a good artist I did 4-6 thumbnails for each of the titles, but in the end I ended up back at the twins. I like my layout, but now that I'm finished I don’t like that Dan is facing away form the viewer. I basically had to choose between Dan interacting with the Twins, or looking at the viewer. I think I made the correct decision, but it still would have been nice to show his face.

Dan is primarily based on WW2 Fighter pilot uniforms as well as old school diving suits. I researched many of the more subtle details like the white piping to ensure they were accurate to the 50's fashion senses (and not to the 30’s or 40’s, after all, the future shouldn’t look like last decade…). Among the many facts I discovered while doing my research was that it was fashionable for 50s cowboys to cross-draw instead of side-draw their pistols. So while Dan will be lasing everyone in sight when he draws his weapon, it is accurate to the era.

When I started in on it I was thinking I’d go with really basic shading, something that looked like it was designed for old school printing equipment, but as I got a bit further into the research I realized they weren’t as ‘primitive’ as I though, so I had to beef up my shading.

I had a complete blast participating in this CHOW!

Hmm, this isn't showing up in the preview. I'll try actually posting it to see if it works.

Trying to get it to look like a pulp cover: faded simple colouring, years of wear and tear (hopefully the actual required designs aren't too obscured). Sergeant Dan was designed with the Biblical 'Daniel' in mind, while the Valkyrie is an attempt at something of an angelic cosmonaut.

"Sergeant Dan and The Bat-Men of Thorium"

Decided to go with Sergeant Dan and The Bat-men of Thorium...
I had Frazetta in mind when I did the illustration.:lifedrawing:

I think I could have made everything a little more dynamic and worked out the composition thoroughly before jumping into painting. Would've liked to polish it a bit more too but jumped in pretty late in the game.

Awesome chow...I learnt a lot participating in this :D
Great pieces everyone!

Went with the Buck Rogers/Flash Gordon sci-fi theme, and reasoned that a Valkyrie "from the Void" might be quite different than what we're used to seeing.

In the original thread it's written "Pick one of the titles below" so i'm probably wrong posting 2 entries. It's 860kb ( all four ) so probably a lot of time to load, pm me or take down directly the one you like less. :)

EDIT

IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ

Hey guys, I can't save any of the files from the attachment editor, it's giving me 'attachment.php' instead of the files anytime i right-click save them. So, I'm delaying the poll until I can figure out what's going on and see if I can get it fixed.

ENTRANTS, PLEASE EMAIL ME YOUR ENTRIES. Email them to brittnewstead at conceptart.org. I only need your finals, so that I can put them in poll. Hopefully this won't be necessary and the attachment issue can be solved, but in the meantime let's try to get things together before them.

If anyone can save all the attachments in this thread, PLEASE PLEASE contact me by PM or email, as I might ask you a huge favour. :P

Thanks everyone, sorry for the delay.

POLL IS UP!

Thanks to everyone who helped me sort out the images. I contacted the people's in charge and hopefully IT will have the bug fixed soon, but I appreciate all your efforts in the meantime. :] I got a lot of messages so I can't reply to them all!

No cuts this week.

I missed the deadline! Sorry, i didn't know about the time change.

Anyway, here's my Sargent, adventuring deep into the cold, white VOID.

I think it doesn't quite fit the "pulp" look. But instead it looks like a cool rock album cover from the 70's, ha!

Also, I've just set up my homepage www.leolistens.com.ar (I'm looking from concept art jobs). So if you like to check it out, i would appreciate if you mail me your opinion.

Wow great entries! Voted for adamSchumpert's and Blaise' entries. I wold vote for Nightblue's as well. If only she made it to the poll.

Daestwen: I don't know if you already knew about this but about the saving file thing, i have that problem too, to solve this i have to change the extention .php to .jpg . I usually rename it in the file name box before clicking the save button. Hope this helps, it's less convenient than usual though, especially for your activity. I hope the IT guys fix this soon.

Oh bugger, the deadline was Sunday this time? Whoops! (Should pay more attention next time.) Heh, guess I have no excuse to procrastinate on actual work now... :^^;:

(Not that I would have had time anyway, I blew the whole weekend sketching at the annual Sakura Matsuri, and now my brain is all full of Japanese and totally not in pulp-space anymore.)

Oh well. This is probably one of the most colorful polls yet, I'll say that. Voted Adam Schumpert, Tommoy and Blaise...

Tommoy: It just feels so authentically cheesy to me, both the characters and execution (Those garish colors! Those goofy aliens! Perfect!)

Adam Schumpert: It's got the dynamic action thing going on, excellent poses and expressions. Though to feel REALLY pulpy, needs more color (RED!) And I kind of wish the menace was more prominent...

Blaise: THAT is pulp, you've pretty much got it all - simple, dynamic, harsh colors, nice slapdash style, all very appropriate...

Nightblue, I would have voted for that one, too, if it weren't for the deadline SNAFU (ha, you and me both) - nice action-packed scenario, and you've got the right pulpy mood. (Wish the colors were a bit less murky, though.)

Runners-up:
Dumpling: I love the style and characters, but it ain't pulp to me. Would be cool as a modern comic book, though.

Homerid: The style and characters are pretty much spot-on, but I don't know about that static hand-on-ear pose - not sure what he's doing, but it doesn't say "action!"

JanJager: Very fun and cheesy - but it's a little muddled-looking, and the execution's gotten just a bit sludgy. Could use more distinct colors and shapes in general.

Great round and had a lot of fun looking at the entries. Radius, your entry is hilarious :D

Voted for:

Adam: That's one heck of an action shot! Really dig the flow of your poses and simple color scheme.

Tommoy: You nailed the pulp feel! Love the colors and the cheesy, cheerfulness :)

The fact that these forums are well run and available to everyone, even humble amatures like myself, is something that I am very grateful for. If the deadlines need to change then theres no need to apologise. I'll just have to pay more attention.

This one was very tough! I'm a huge pulp fan, and a lot of these were great covers! In the end, I had to select those I felt I would actually expect to see in my pulp cover collection: Tommoy, AdamSchumpert, Blaise, Homerid, JanJager, missile, and Truepinkas. Of those, AdamSchumpert and Blaise really knocked it out of the park, the former with that fantastic action pose and cthulhoid villains, the latter with the pulp coloring, bold lettering, and even spine wrinkles! Fantastic work, everyone! missile, it you had a t-shirt of your Valkyrie, I'd wear it with pride!

LeoListens, that one's a great take on it, too! To really fulfill its pulp destiny, though, you need some background and genuine pulp titling!
