Hello all,
Those are quick concepts, between 1 and 4 hours, just to keep in shape, so to speak, and figure things out. Not meant to be perfect at all.
The new ones are now later on in the thread (I reached the max here.)
ps: Some of these sketches have references that you'll recognize maybe.

Hehe...I recognize that psychic projection effect...I think from Rick Berry or Phil Hale? Forget which one...loved the idea. Works well in your sketch too.
A few of these bug me, anatomy wise, but most of them are rockin'. I won't bother to comment beyond that, n00b that I am. :)

There are alot of very very good things happening here! The images where you relaxed and let the details slide are the most realistic, the ones with the most life.
the woman with the scythe, the monk with the axe and the floating woman are excellent. easily my favorites of the images I've seen you post on CA.

These are very cool images. It seems that sometimes you struggle with face proportions. According to Jack Hamm, which has the best face proportion ideals that Ive found, the cornias of the eye should rest on the half way mark of the head. Beneath that, devide the remaining half into fifths, and the bottom of the nose falls on the 2nd line from the eyes, and the mouth on the 3rd. There is an eye distance between each eye, and half an eye distance from the outside edge of the eye to the side of the head when viewed from the front. There should also be and equallateral triangle formed when you draw a line from the outside corner of one eye, to the outside corner of the other eye, and down to the bottom of the lip. If this trangle is not equal on all sides, it is likely the face wont appear 'attractive' to most people. These are small details, and perhaps force an overly mechanical aproach to checking ones work. But it seems that knowing this has helped me most of the time. I will try and scan some of his drawings that pertain to this tomorrow if I have the time.

I really love the detail of the armour design on the next to last one, the sketch. Not sure the open breasts are really neccessary though, especially with all the detailing on the armour, the partial nudity is distracting. You have breasts in several of your images, and some of them are a little wierd... and off... anatomically. So you might want to get some more reference.
Your paintings are really interesting, and I definately appreciate that you wanna get so you can work faster. Everything just seems to get dark, and I think that some planned lighting could really strengthen them. Because, as moody as darkness in an image can make a piece, it is starting to take away from what we are supposed to see, because, well, we can't see it.
The bottom painting of the monk works really well in the darkness, the way the face peeks out into the light is really nice too, though.

Thanks all for responding :)
softdrawer: thanks man, I actually use roughly 15 different brushes, but yeah, bristol's in it. Heh. Actually, I like the one you mention and I'm trying to push myself towards this direction now, that is: simpler and details where needed only, with more of a painterly look than my previous attempts. I'm trying to break the habit, in other words.
fukifino: as mentionned by cotron, the first time I saw that effect was indeed on a Jon Foster painting. I hope he doesn't mind me using it and if he does, well, he knows where I live and I'm sure he'd love to come and kick my ass anytime :p Anatomy-wise, you're right, but again, those are quick concepts, I didn't spend time on details so much (I should maybe.)
bwkeough: thank you for your comments. I hope to improve as time goes by. Well, I don't know if "improve" is the right word, but I'm trying to break from my previous habits and getting more into the painterly style. Easy to learn, hard to master.
cotron: right. Do you know if he "invented" it, or if it was used before (as such?)
mephisto: thanks for your explanations. I'm aware, I think, of what you're talking about. As I told fukifino, these are quickies and I didn't spend too much time refining and fixing: what was important to me were the ideas and the mood. If that works, I can always spend hours fixing everything. My previous problem was that I'd start on details way too early in the process and I'd lose track of the mood and the composition would suffer enormously. I'm not saying I'm better at it now, but I'm trying to focus on that rather than the anatomical errors and such.
JeniThus: thank you. The sketch is actually not really a quickie per se, but I like it. Actually, this is a case of visual misunderstanding: the breasts are not meant to be bared: they're actually supposed to be made of metal like the rest of the armor. I guess that I little shadowing or coloring would have helped. You're right about the dark, and that's a personal preference, but I shouldn't just do that. In fact, one of the newer quickies is lighter :)
pogonip: merci beaucoup! please come again, steady customer...
Drumwhore: thank you very much. I like this version. The original version was lighter and not as dramatic (see below). I just spent some time playing with effects and darkened it a lot. It turned out better as a darker pix.

Sorry for the late response, but you know, life...
the toddler: thank you very much. I think it turned out alright too (modestly speaking.)
Dan: Hey Dan! thanks for your praise :) I forgot to tell you that I loooove your last Thunderdome entry :ep:. It's fantastic and I wish I could draw like that. I'm still trying to get to be faster, and I'm struggling, but I'm having fun! Maybe I should do storyboard to get that better at that skill, huh? You too, keep posting!!!
MindCandyMan: hey hey hey, it's been a while. You've been watching me all this time, heh :) thank you for your appreciation.
Guyjin: Thank you very much. I try to put details only where needed since time is of the essence. I don't know if I'm always successful, but that's the goal. It's mostly painter with some photoshop here and there. B&W and inks tend to be PS, but it's not a firm rule.
mephisto: yes, that would be me :) Jon helped me indeed. I don't think we've met yet, have we? well, it's just a matter of time now. It's funny to think that my old stuff is still down there. Retrospectively, I don't think it was very good, but then again, at least it proves (to me at least) that I am improving. Meet you soon, hopefully.
Carnifex: That's a good idea, C. I might do that but I can't do it on a daily basis. I think I might just decide on a subject that inspires me and do something - thanks for the heads-up (can I still win the booby prize? - just to add the the debate going on in another thread we all know about now...)
jett: thank you very much.
Cassandra: hi you! been a while. Thank you very much, here's for you too :
daspetey: thank you. Think of the clouds as being "artsy" (hmm, well...that's an excuse) and it turns out that "bang" is also one of my favs!
Until next time.

yeah! consistent improvement. One general crit: use a different color than white as the background, it's washing out your highlights and flattening your shadows.
I like the female halberdier best, but I wish I could see at least one of her hands. Very good, tho, well realized costume and equipment. The paladin is my next-favorite, also well-conceived, but the fore-shortened arm looks too thick at the elbow.
keep rocking these out; I only realized last night that whenever I think I'm drawing enough I should be drawing twice as much!

It's fantastic!
I think that, in general, all your artworks are very impressive, although there might be some minor details here and there that might need some improvements ( i.e.: the face of the girl in the 11th drawing, the right foot of the girl in the 18th one, etc. )
All in all... it's great. ( I like the 1st better! )
Overall: 8.0/10

bwkeough: yeah, I should remove the white. Those were quick studies, so I didn't bother, but you are right. The hands are hidden by long sleeves, that's just the design of the shirt :)
Endorfin: hey! thanks for the mark :) I didn't expect to get graded here, hehe. Again, these are concepts and sketches done as exercises and they're bound to have problems - but I won't spend more time on them at this point (around an hour a piece, generally no more than 2 if I can prevent it.)
grinn: yes, it was based on Sitting Bull, though I didn't quite made a "portrait" per se but used the famous photo as a reference to draw this one. I think it's awesome to have such a famous historic figure as a grand (x5) father! what a neat family tree! :)

Oh yeah, let me explain: That was an allusion to the Janet Jackson' stunt on TV. If you're living in the US, you HAD to know about it because it was such a huge thing that you couldn't open a media without having this whole circus frontpage and all...though, for the hell of me, I still don't know why. Dunno if it made it all the way to EU: it's not news material, it's sensationalism.
For those who missed it, during Superbowl, Janet Jackson had a duet with Justin Timberlake, and the stunt was that Justin ripped her shirt off to reveal one of her breast (which had tape, so it had to be choreographed.) Yes, you had kids watching probably, and yes, it was during one of the biggest televised event in this country, but hey! it's nothing we haven't seen before, and yes it could be interpreted as violence against women, and yes...the list goes on.
Was it tasteful? certainly not. Did it had to spark such controversy? certainly not.
Of course, this happened in the country in which Ashcroft (I believe) wanted to cover the breasts of the statue representing Freedom, in courts. The amount of ignorance shown by some leaders in this country just floors me.
Well, in any case, it made (rich) people over-react - a trend - furiously over this "show of indecency" : Janet and Justin had to apologize. My previous post was a paraphrase of the apology.
Roughly after that, politicians, being elected by the same people, had to react the way the public wanted, and so, Congress just increased the fines for "indecent broadcasts" from $27,000 to $500,000.
Rumor is that the FCC is planning to fine Howard Stern. Stern was just dropped on all the Clear Channel stations, after the government started cracking down on radio execs. If the FCC fines him, it will be for nothing he hasn't been doing on the air for the last 10 years, but instead to make an example of him...and others too. Who's next? So now, the Feds will tell you what you can, and cannot watch. "1984" meets "Brave New World"? No thank you. We already have "Novus Ordo Seclorum", and I'm not fond of it. Additionally, The FCC is looking to oversee both Satellite Radio and cable TV.
Next, they will fine Art for indecency. Show a breast, pay a fine.
Philistines!

Thanks guys, for your nice comments.
2 days ago, I learned that my friend and buddy John passed away. I felt the need to do this.
John "Crank" C.,
There you go bro, this doodle's for you. Keep me a warm seat up there, but be patient, I don't intend to join you right away. We had great times together and you made me laugh my ass off like noone else could, Crank, really. I'm so glad we were able to work together, and I'll never forget you. You had one of the biggest heart, made entirely of pure gold. Not only did you manage to entertain me, but pretty much the entire AC community at one point. Quite a feat, buddy, quite a feat. Looks like Heaven's up for a few massive laughs. I envy them, somehow.
Why did you had to go so soon? I don't know, but fuck, man, it was way too early. I was hoping to see you when going to the West Coast, see how your life was turning out, after leaving the East Coast. Sounds like you had fun down there.
I'll always remember our trips to the office...the best car trips I ever had, man. You even made the truck drivers honk everytime we passed them, remember? Ah shit, you nutcase, I'll miss you. But I am so very glad I knew you, even for too short a time.
Well, this is the last goodbye, then, right? You liked to drink, and I don't, so why don't you have 2 for the both of us, or just pretend that I'm holding sake in that painting, k?
Alright Johnny-boy, time for me to let you go, as hard as it is. I love you, bro, and I'll miss you.
really.

hey, I ca definately tell that you are an experienced artist, atleast with the painter program. I think all of those concepts are very well drawn out with minor flaws and lack of elaboration on the backround; I like to think of the backround being just as important as the forground because of something called atmospheric perspective. The things around the focused object say a lot about the object itself (ex. shadows, landscapes, other characters, something else happening within the image). Though I am new to CA I hope I was a help. I think you are definitly going somewhere with your art.
P.S. the Janet Jackson peice i thought was really funny, although the appologie kinda of ruined the political statement it was making. Try doing more of the politic paintings i think they can be funny and have a point to them.
Love your stuff.

Clandestine_IX: thanks man. I'm sorry I ruined your pants. Next time, I'll have a "wear a diaper" warning, ok? :p
Jeff jaws, Scubasteve, bwkeough, blackarts: thanks guys, I hope to show some improvement over time. And you too, keep posting!
Briza: I'm with you, buddy, I'm with you. See the answer I gave jgillman below.
Hito and Kambei: thank you, gents. I'm still learning and experimenting a lot, and I think I'm starting to understand things slightly better - maybe that shows in the paintings (hopefully). A lot of inspiration comes from the very talented people in this forum. And Mifune Toshiro is such a great actor!
jgillman: Thanks, Joshua. Every bit of info or feedback helps. Welcome to CA. As for the statement, If you re-read it, you will notice that I didn't apologize. I did explain things a bit more in depth, however. When/If I make a political or satyric pieces, I'm not going to apologize for it - what would be the point of doing it in the first place if I'm not going to stand by it, right? I will apologize only if there's a valid reason to do so, but this wasn't the case. I think, in this case, the gov' simply over-reacted (once again.)

the shift from bright background w/semi silhouette on her left arm works well when compared to the mid-value red background and the full silhouette on her right arm.
maybe she could be front-lit by torch light to pick out some details on her face and armor?

syntax401: looks like the whole Providence and Vicinity area is meeting in this thread :)
Fabrys: aha, yes I do like that one very much too, but I really don't think I could do it justice in color. However, if you feel like it, since it's your specialty, feel free to give it a try if you want (I can email you a bigger version). Though I'm sure you have plenty to do already...
mephisto: Hmmm strong legs! Me car's still screwed until early next week, but I should be able to rejoin the modelling class soon. Can't wait to check those books of yours.

i love your skillful, earnest style. some of them seem too dark- maybe just my monitor?
**political rant follows**
ive been following the stern thing myself, and reading 'angels and demons' which alludes to alot of history regarding the catholic church destroying various sculptures in rome for indecency and, supposedly, scientific symbolism. its nothing new, i guess, but its all just distractionism, a political tool. no-one i actually know gave more than a thought to the janet jackson thing. the only outrage i heard was from politicians and the media itself.
**end rant*

hey, another nice one. I'm guessing this warrior performed an assassination for someone that is standing in the viewers position. One thing that isn't very clear, because of the darkness, is that he's offering the sword to the viewer. At first glance, I though the sword was hanging from the back of this belt.
Your dark colors add a richness to the image, but you might need to bump the contrast alittle bit, just in the important places. A shine on the scabbard would be all you need here.

hey guys, thanks for your nice comments. I added some highlights and details to bring the scabard forward, in front of the character. I hope that it helps a bit (see above - I replaced the image).
Now, the new one.

Haha, that last one's awesome, tegehel. It's not often you see your classic fantasy characters in a .. well .. classical picture. It definately lends more believability to the subject. :)

thanks, guys. The general is based on a Velasquez painting (Juan de Pareja), and this one on a George de la Tour (Magdalene). It's an idea I heard from Marshall Vandruff and others, that is to use great Masters paintings as reference to learn composition, colors, etc...

Great lighting in that last one. It's got a Dutch 17th century feel to it.
