Spartan Camp #134 - 50 gestures + Optional "Action Pose Study"

The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 25th of April.

- The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!

- In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Action Pose Study", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:
A familiar one, since the thread is up late this week. Attempt to show the actual action (Think of movement, tension, motion, dynamics). Pictures of sports or athletes may provide suitable reference.
Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Have fun!

50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.

Critting each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference and resources!! Let's help each other get better!

Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!!

I had a very busy and tiresome week, I drew some heads in the first days of the week. I spent my whole evening on some gestures, a lot of time on each one. It seems I'm unable to improve, it gets only harder and slower, I can't draw a decent sketch in an hour, I have no idea how to draw a body, no matter the quality or simplicity, therefore I need several redraws (the first one has flaws like a head 3 times smaller it should be, usually).
It's even more painful than failing my motorbike exam...

Maybe I should do zillion quick ones and some long ones (several days on the same gesture or something). One hour is both too long and too short.

Sealegs : Nice Studies. Nice line work. The blocks really made your figures look dimensional.
Anthis : Your figures look quite good. The shading helps to bring out the volume.
shiNIN : I thought your side views face studies are really good though. As for the digital one seems like you spent more time on the first one on the left. It's coming along. Keep on practicing and I'm sure you'll improve. For me "struggling" is a nice thing 'cos when you can conquer it, it'll make you feel like you have achieve so much more than otherwise.

Here's mine

All referenced from books,

This time I tried more animal studies. It's really more difficult than it seems. Struggled quite a bit.

Sealegs Lovely strong lines and interesting gestures, wish I could sketch that neatly on Photoshop :)

Anthis Beautiful as always :) I like the last sheet with the sketchy lines here and there, using blue is quite effective.

Shinin I would say you've improved from what I've seen the past couple of weeks. I know what you mean about warming up, I have to do a couple of sheets of cack before things start coming together but I do run out of steam quite quickly, it's hard to keep the enthusiasm up sometimes when it's not going your way though sometimes if you push through it it can work out for the better and I agree with Echo7925 it can be more satisfying :D

Echo7925 Cool stylisation :) like the animals, interesting things going on, I especially like the mountain goat on steroids :) the last page has some nice movement in the gestures and the clothing.

A bit on the late side but here's my attempts this week. Didn't have much time this week, was doing the POW.

Thanks for the comments guys! Thought i might leave some quick feedback as well while im here :)

Anthis- Nice lines! Wanna see more :) keep it coming!

Shinin- Hang in there! There are always lots of mistakes till u get it right! This means u are learning! :yum: keep it up! Fast ones and slow ones are both good practice! Good head practice, nice job with the heads, i see u are braking it down into geometric shapes and also studying the features! This is how u should study the figure! Break it down, study the parts and also the whole...I see a little skeleton for the standing figure...do more of this :)

I think u are over-thinking your figures- getting caught up on details. You can get so focused on a certain part that you easily forget about the "whole"-thats usually what causes u to keep fixing proportions...

Keep it super simple at first...just basic shapes, then later add anatomy and other complexity...
Maybe get one of those little wooden mannequins if u think it would help...

Echo 7925-Nice animals, i like the 3rd the best, deer is great...practice your proportions on your people, i like that u are doing dynamic poses, some look kinda cartoony, were these from a comic book?

Angel_IntheUk- good gestures...Some of these are looking really good for being so fast...keep it up! maybe try some longer poses as well:)

Sealegs : Thanks for your comments. I agree some do look cartoony. I was watching different stuff on the tv when I was doing the studies. Guess I was influenced by what I was seeing on the tv. Tempted to explore different things, so I tried to tweak my reference to explore stuff. Some of the poses you see are from tv too.
