I had so much fun yesterday (thanx for the comments btw) that i'm just gonna try and post my daily pic.
I don't want to put in too much time though so here's todays:
(also based on that first link, it's that snake, bringing destruction to earth.)

Actually i dont know what that dragon had to do with ragnarok ^^, in my experiance its basicly the snake wich holds the earth together who lets go of his tail ( that is in his mouth) and fenris comes down etc etc etc.

Btw, in swedish it's ragnarök, midgårds ormen (the snake) Fenris ulven( fenrir) =) maybe its fun to know :PPPPP

Got stuck on that part of the world sinking into the sea, thought it would be interesting imagery to tackle. Photoshop's Gradient Map function turned out very helpful today.
For some reason I want to see Holden draw this one, but maybe that's because I'm a sicko. :D

Ok first dsg entry, pretty embarassed tbh. Wasn't going to enter todays as my first as I wasn't really inspired by the title, but uni really was that boring today. All done in photoshop with a danged rollball mouse in about an hour.
I thought they might need a few more troops so here's an recruitment poster for the youth devision

You know it's a tough topic when you just stare at the screen and go "what the hell...?"
maybe I'm just slow.
Anyway.
Signature: I like your spin on the topic.
BrainBug: Cool snake/dragon thingie.
ApricotSoup: don't be embarrassed about your work. Ever. And don't apologize. You did great - not only is it well rendered, it's funny. You can't go wrong with that! Keep it up, welcome and I hope to see more of your work here!
plaf: What can I say? Great as always. Sort of reminds me of the Baalrog from LOTR, but that's just me.
Railboy: I must have stared at yours for ten minutes before it dawned on me what's going on. Strangely, that played in your favor with me. I totally dig your pic. *squeels like a girlie in pigtails* "It's soo cool!".

I jumped up and down when I saw this topic...then the enormity of the subject hit me. You could make paintings for AGES off all the great visuals from this topic. Ahem...so....needless to say I ran out of time on this. I made myself stop at 90 minutes. If I hadn't I probably would have kept working at it for hours.

Silentbrain - moody. Cool.
Plaf - I love yours dearly. Just wonderful.

I found this topic difficult because there was so much to choose from and I didn't manage to focus on a single theme. One track mind I think. I did finally get something down, the last big battle. The easy one :) And I've never done a battle pic before anyway..
http://amerasu.randomleft.com/ca/feb18_04_ragnarok.jpg
Signature - I love that idea! It's just how I felt reading the description.
BrainBug - I like the colours though I think the fire would be far cooler if you defined it more.
Silentbrain - Very serene
ApricotSoup - Cute :)
plaf - Really like the way you painted the cave. Looks evil.
Railboy - Took me a sec to get a proper view and now that i see it, it looks good.
Sabre - Nice style
Swan - Horn looks great, and the laid back blowing position too

oregano: thanks dude :) yeah, i guess the flame stuff and that would remind of the balrog. nothing intentional though. (the whole thing is more or less just random, anyway)
amerasu: glad you like it. i think yours is pretty cool as well. if you added a distant row of enemies in contorted shapes, dimly visible through the fog, i think it would be even more wicked.
swan: yours is great. love the dynamic stance Heimdall has - and the other guy for that matter. i dunno what it is, but i find it kinda amusing to look at :)

Einherjar
The Einherjar are the heroes who have died with great bravery on the battle fields. These heroes are prepared in Valhalla for the oncoming battle of Ragnarok. In the morning they are woken by the crowing of the cock Gullinkambi ("golden comb"). During the day they train and fight, until they cut each other to pieces. At night they feast at Odin's side and their wounds are miraculously healed.
On the day of Ragnarok, the bravest of the Einherjar will march with Odin to battle the frost giants, the enemies of the gods. .

Been a long time since I've had time for a DSG, and I didn't really have time today either. But this topic is just too cool to pass up. I think it would be so interesting to develop each character involved in this; all the gods, demons and creatures; and then storyboard the last battle. :( I've got to find some time before I think about starting such a big project, though!
Anyhow, here is my 30 min speed paint and relevant excerpts from the link kaptah provided, I only wish I had the time to do this topic justice.
http://www.velondra.com/images/doodle/ragnarok.jpg
"It will be preceded by Fimbulvetr, the winter of winters... The wolf Skoll will finally devour the sun, and his brother Hati will eat the moon, plunging the earth [into] darkness. The stars will vanish from the sky. The cock Fjalar will crow to the giants and the golden cock Gullinkambi will crow to the gods. A third cock will raise the dead."

Not in the mood to color.
These are supposed to be 2 panels.
Hugi (the raven in the window) alerting odin that the frost giants are attacking.
This is kinda before ragnarok...

I had good time making this, though while I liked the sketch, I don't like the coloring. :-( I wanted to go for a "shades of gray" storyboard look, but ended up with this.
Suggestions?

I just thought you might find it interesting to know that :
That Fenrir on the original tongue was Fenrisulfur. Or Fenris wolf.
That Fenrir along with Hela, Midgardsworm and odins horse are the children of Loki. And the interesting part is, Loki is the mother :P
That Fenrir is supposed to be a giant wolf (ive seen a few ordinary sized ones here)
thank yew

All of you guys and gals have great ideas, and have done some creative stuff with it.
Mike--I really like your piece there. The colouring is really good, and he you got the fierce look with him. I do have one suggestion, however, and that is this: the side of his face which is turned away from the viewer seems too flat: IE, the eye surface. You might want to make the eye a bit rounded where it fades from view.
Keep up the great stuff!
Swan

Some really cool stuff posted here. I knew this topic would bring out folks (scare some folks off too, but ya gotta admit it's a damn cool topic).
Davi - am I missing something? I don't see a sketch at all...was this just an FYI post? An answer to someone else's comment or question? Hmmm....
JDShaffer - I agree with Mike's comment that this isn't very clear. From the size it's at and the color, I would actually think it's a raven, not a cock.
Firematador - I like this sketch, but the photo-realism of the ground he's breaking through doesn't fit with the rest of the sketch.
Amerasu - I LOVE your Heimdall (yes, that's who mine was too - blowing the final horn to summon the hordes. I think you did a better job of 'capturing' him)
And Mike - you do amazing stuff with a "simple" sketch. You nailed Fierce.
P.S. Hey, Talmir - not to stamp up and down on your post or anything, but Loki was only the mother of Sleipnir, Odin's horse. Angrboda the Giantess (also a shapechanger) was the mother of Hel, Fenrir and Jormungand. The form they took during the coupling determined the race of the offspring. (See? That's my DnD geek showing.)

I was rather taken with the idea of the ice giants.

Thanks for the input, MIKECORRIERO and Swan. You caught me red handed! I didn't know what to do with the cock, despite originally thinking of making it the foreground object. If I can, I'll see about editing it, but I don't know if I can find time before the end of today's session...
Thanks again. I definitely wish to improve, and every comment is worth its weight in gold! :D
Cheers,

As moon starts to disappear, the demi-god Loki is freed from the bounds of chain and rock and sets forth from the ice lands of hell, in snow and in storm to do battle with the gods… this is the begging of the begging of the end of the time of man.
http://www.digitalmack.com/Pages/TempPostings/ranorick.jpg
Repent now, for all that is good... repent and save your sole
On another note, I agree this should have been a week topic,
Day 1 the waking of the gods, and the dammed,
Day 2 the preparing of legions for battle,
Day 3 the darkening of the moon, and devouring of the starts,
Day 4 the battle of good and evil,
Day 5 the sinking of the land,
Day 6 the rebirth of gods,
Day 7 the rebirth of man and lands,

What a crazy and vast topic.
I first thought of the punk band GWAR's album, but here's my take on Ragnarok. It's "The fire giants, led by the giant Surt". He is scorching the Earth.
http://www.shawnadomanis.com/dsg/dsg357.jpg
Silentbrain - That is very moody and emotional.
plaf - Cool as hell. Very nice perspective too.
Railboy - That is very well done, but I thought that the wolf "Skoll will finally devour the sun, and his brother Hati will eat the moon" not the earth. Just a note.
Swan - Very nice, especially how much volume you have in such little time. That pose is really cool.
Amerasu - It's the calm before the storm...
Sunny - Nice. I love the background, it really sets the character off.
Olsen - So dynamic. The sense of movement and impending violence is intense.
Velo - I like the scene. I wish you had more time to tighten it up. Keep posting.
firematador - Fenrir is well done, but I thought that the use of photos was against the DSG rules. Just a word of advice.
Amerasu - Busy bee aren't we? I like this. It's very stylistic to the middle ages.
MIKECORRIERO - Very nice start. I hope you can finish. From another post I remember you saying about your wrist. Hope all is well on that front, because it would be ashame to lose you...
Oregano - Great start. He either is really pissed or constipated.
Antilight77 - I was going to do that scene too. Well, something close to it. Very nice take on it. I think that if you would have spent about 5 more minutes of the moon, it would have been much, much stronger.
micmac - Good scene. I like the limited color pallette too.
Til tomorrow...

I was thinking of the Ragnarok Hitler planed for Berlin if he would lose WW2. He wanted to destroy the whole city or something like that. But as we know he lost and so Berlin is still in its place. I really tried but couldn't bring my thoughts on paper. Well a very uncreative day for me!

Yeah, Hitler was great like that. When the war started going badly, one of his views was: "if the German people doesn't win this war, it doesn't deserve to go on existing".
Heads of state in totalitarian regimes - so charming. Thank god we've learnt not to be THAT stupid anymore.
