ok here's my chance to redeem myself for that crappy car I posted earlier. Here is a painting I just completed for my demo tape. I'm also attachng a link to a sequence movie you can watch to see how I painted it. The sequence is a big ass file so you might need hi-speed internet. Sorry about posting the crappy car.

I like it! Nice mood.
Thanks for posting movie, I am trying to learn more about this stuff.
What program did you use? Brushes?

November 18th, 2002, 03:31 AM
Thanx favek
I used Painter 7: loaded pallette knife, flat smeary, and digital airbrush for details. the sequence is a really cool feature in painter7 in the scripts options that records all of your steps as you paint.
good luck

Finally!!!!!!!!!! Someone is posting their scripts/movies! This is so extremely helpful. To see the technique behind it is awesome. I have been wondering how to use the loaded palette knife tool that is awesome. Thanks so much for posting that movie. This is so extremely helpful. Woohoo!

I like the style... not too dark, the lighting is quite good
I didn't know Painter had a movie option...
Hey, do you know OpenCanvas ? It's a free little painting software, with just needed tools and specials options like "movies" export or Dual Painting...
I like the tablet touch with it, fast and smooth, and opacity and size variations are perfect...
Movie files aren't that big, so it's maybe better for low connection, but, on the other hand, you need to have OC to see it...

Awesome piece..I love the lighting and atmosphere =)
Very cool..
Damn I wish I could download that movie file..screw this 56k modem!

November 22nd, 2002, 04:06 AM
yes! death to 56k modems. I'm glad you like the last piece. I'm just going to start posting all of my finished stuff in here from now on. I'm feeling conservative right now. :boo:
so with that thought here's a new one I whipped out today, between renders and edits and waiting for an open edit machine. You didn't think I would just sit on my arse did you?

I never saw a pic made with markers from you...
This is my fav mcotie-pic yet!!! GREAT! :whoa:

While I'm waiting for the movie, I might as well comment, no? :)
The helm design is nice on the first one. Execution wise, it's a bit dull, colour/saturation/stroke wise. I'd take a look at Brom to see how he utilize contrasts and colour/saturation variance to create interest.
Picture number two, Wow, terrific rendering! If you used PS to make the colours richer, and then rendered that arm to metal status (remember NoxizMad's first ccreature?) that would be a fantastic creation! it might just be a sketch to you, to me it's crazy!
Ah, the movie has come to a theatre near me, thanks for sharing!

Holy crap m-dog!
Now that is a fucking monster!
I love it, in case you couldnt tell already...that human head there is just a great touch =)
Was this done with markers?
mcotie
November 24th, 2002, 01:15 PM
Thanx
Lono> yeah the head is pretty gruesome. If you look close it has a carved tattoo of "MOM" on the forehead of it. Could this be it's mother's head? hmm. could be.
MindCandyMan, Fozz and Amphex>
I started out with a pencil sketch very rough. then I came in with a prismacolor cool grey 20%, 40% and started to flesh out some shapes. then I used chartpak warm gray #1. #2 and cool gray #1, #2 to add some contrasting shadows. The cool thing about chartpaks is, they run, alot. normally that wouldn't be so cool. but this is what establishes all the little "nurmies" in the details. because i then go inafter i've laid out all of the markers and add the details with staedtler pigment liner pen. the last step of the traditional media was then the guache hilights. after i was pleased with that I finally took it into photoshop and added the desaturated colors. like the reds and purples and the blue-green tattoos. I then dodge/burned allthe necessary areas to punch it out.
Thats it.
NordstrandT.> thanx man, I do need alot of practice with color, it's something that i have been diving into lately.
Batteram> I am planning on modeling this guy!
Here is a new one done in painter yesterday of one of my characters, Cullach (a character I created sometime ago).

November 24th, 2002, 05:36 PM
Wow..the last one is also amazing!
I love the feeling of action and motion..I think the background has alot to do with that, and you really did a superb job with it.
If only I could be as creative as you..Ive been spending weeks trying to design a cool character, but I just dont have the originality or creativity in me!

November 24th, 2002, 09:47 PM
damn dude! you're very fast. how do you obtain such a speedy brain, eyeball, and hand quality. i find myself a bit slow sometimes(ok, i realize i just left myself wide open for humorous attacks....therefore i am rendering them all null and void).
great job mitch!! keep'em com'n!!!
mcotie
November 25th, 2002, 01:08 AM
thanx guys.
Tarwater> thanks man.
davi> thanx, yes it's hard to not want to use Hawkprey's baddass marker technique. I believe he uses more of a range of subtle colors though, but definitely the cool/warm combo, rather than just one or the other.
amphex> thanx, the story was created quite sometime before the character was. this guy started out as a Cerebus looking cartoony guy and transformed into a more human guy. Lots of conept drawing to develope him, I may get around to posting those to show his development.
MindCandyMan> they're coming!!!
WhiteBlaizer> I do try to get better with each drawing/painting. But I'm not sure what you are trying to say. Do I sux or do I just sux sux? thanx for the compliment on "the last one".
keyth> I am totally addicted to drawing, painting and what not. plus I have no time in the day so I draw when I can, and on any surface. A family and school and a job, I aint got time to sit and contemplate what to draw. It's do or (the idea) dies, bro. Can't wait till I get to do this stuff as a job rather than on the fly. watchout!!!
here's another one. I'm in the process of purging out my "star wars" looking vehicles and doing some stuff that is more to "my style" if you will.
heres one I did tonight all in PS, about 2 hrs.

Awesome work man. I LOVE your stuff. You are churning out some killer paintings man. I am going to be in Dallas/Fort Worth Texas for a week starting tomorrow. Maybe I can drop by and you can scrape some fairy dust off of your drawing hand and give me some of your powers. I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE the guy with tusks and the two axes. Looks so awesome. Keep it up bro. How long does a picture like that take you? Keep up the good work man. You will get an art job someday...that's for sure...you can't keep pumping out all this crazy good stuff and not get one. Keep it up bro.

November 27th, 2002, 11:47 AM
WhiteBlaizer> it's cool, thanx. I checked out your site and you have soma amazing models. love your stuff.
ne obchod> thx, check out ebay or mysimon.com for a wacom, plus check out companies or schools that use wacoms selling old stuff, they usually get rid of wacoms dirt cheap. AI Dallas got rid of a butt load of wacoms last year for like $5 a peice. I heard about it too late, but crazy stuff happens like that all over.
MindCandyMan> thx, that'd be cool to get together. email me when you get in town.
amphex> thnx
WerxOne> thnx, I use the chaos effect right now till I figure this stuff out. I met David Cherry ( Old School Illustrator/ artist for Ensemble Studios) last night, man that guy is awesome, he really had some good stuff to share. So there will be more order to my work from now on.

um, Mitch, that is so cool. I love your attention to detail on your models. Did you model every bump and crevace around the staples and nails on that guys neck? If you did, all I can say is damn good work buddy.
btw, when are you going to model that other monster you did with the guys head as his belt. Can't wait to see that one, your models and skins rock!

Hey thanks! I'm just trying to keep up with all the baddass art on this site.
I will start doing some modeling as soon as school is finished. I have just a few weeks left and thigs are kinda crazy right now to start any new projects. But I definitely will takle the dude with the head-belt.
The chunky stuff on the beggar is all bump maps, specularity, and texture maps, I'll have to kick out a render of the gray shader on him so you can compare.
I have not tryed any mods yet. I sure it's something essential if youre not actually holding a job in the field to get a taste for it ( am I right?).
with all of the crazyness right now I still make time to sketch. here are some new ones done today.
thanx again,
