Round 82 :: NightMare

Topic
We've discovered that you guys are just plain dark. So let's go back to the dark realm. I really like this topic and think it's very open. Thanks to Jatari for the suggestion. Nightmare can be anything ;) but I'll leave it up to you all to figure out what your nightmare will be. Have fun
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trying hard to think of stuff that everyone will enjoy and I am thinking teen challenge should be a bit different from all the other challenges. Everything else is pretty specific so I want to keep TC as something a bit more relaxing and personal. Keeping it open as possible If you guys have any ideas throw them in the suggestions thread :D ----> Topic Ideas (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=146413)

Deadline
Sunday, April 18th, 2010

IMPORTANT
1. Add a border around your image with your name and the topic, like they do with the other of the week challenges.
2. Please use the attachment manager, it helps preserve the images to forever and beyond.
3. Mark your final as final.

Good Luck everyone and Hope you have fun! If you have any ideas for where the teen challenge should go then please either PM me or post it in the suggestions thread.

Ohhey, this sounds pretty cool.

Wanted to take part in the last one of these, but it slipped my mind to look here during Spring break... so I'm definitely doing this one. I had some pretty intense nightmares when I was just a wee thing....

I'm completely new here, can someone please quickly explain how this works?

RedHotHoshi
April 14th, 2010, 02:35 PM
I've got mine sketched, don't feel like scanning it though. I'll have a scan up tonight or tomorrow, maybe.

After looking through a couple of the past Teen challenges, I take it that it's rare for someone to do completely traditional stuff, huh? My tablet's on the fritz, so I think I'll do this one in acrylic.

I'll do a traditional piece, because it sounds like fun! :)

A couple questions... 1) Can we use any size canvas or does it have to be relatively square? I was thinking a very skinny tall one. 2) When is the deadline for this and 3) should we post WIPs here or just finals? Sorry to bog down the thread but this sounded like a cool topic and i might have some time to work out my idea.
Good luck everyone and have fun!

zypherax: Hope you can make it man!
Hunchback: Yes sir I am looking forward to it

Freddzie: Got back to you on PM :D, hope it explains everything and welcome to CA

RedHotHoshi: I would love to see that! It'd be brilliant and acrylics are great, defiantly go for it!
Fraser: Hell yeah! breaking the traditions here!

MagicPrincess: It's not problem at all.
1) You can use any size of canvas you like, doesn't have to follow anything
2) The deadline is written where it says "deadline" ;P 18th sunday for this one.
3) Post everything in here, make a post of wips, sketches, ideas to get feedback on and then post your final here too.
Looking forward to seeing what you'll come up with and hope this helps.

Lilnebo- Thanks so much! During my art appreciation class i sketched out my idea perfectly, now to just transfer that to PS. XD and i didn't see the deadline posted, sorry i'm blind, thanks so much again!

I don't think mine's dark enough... No, on second thought, it'll work, with some sauce added here and there. Here's about 5 minutes of sketching and about an hour and half's worth of painting.

I need better brushes ._.

and to fix the well/hole thing.

Ill do the best that i can

I have a lot work ahead of me for the next few days

Goofing around with ideas, I need to replace the kid/fix the kid's anatomy if I keep the kid, and the fact that the caterpillar is way bigger than the kid and dissapears into the floor, and make the face more doll-like, and... :P

Fawn- I like the doll-face/caterpillar idea... the colors are pretty too although i'm sure those will change. XD I would maybe add some depth to the piece by maybe putting the other end of the caterpillar trailing behind his currently exposed body which would also resolve your "disappearing into the floor" issue. The kid could stand to be a tad bigger but if not that would be fine i would just advise to not cut his body off at an obvious point like his shorts or knees... somewhere that feels natural to the eye like middle of calf or even middle of his tibia. Hope this helps, great concept can't wait to see some more progress!

Thirumal Amped- I'm a bit confused on your piece. Is the hair becoming the giant arm? Where are the bottom arms coming from and what is the whole the woman is standing in... it looks shallow considering her feet placement but i don't think that was your intended feel. I can honestly say that this seems truly terrifying though, great concept!

RedHotHoshi- The anatomy on the falling man in very good considering the difficulty in that particular perspective, the well/hole should be more defined unfortunately i don't have much advice. I'd say to darken the edges of the piece making the whole thing seem more linear and focus your viewers eye. I just realized that's probably water at the bottom in which case adding some dark or light lines for contours on waves or ripples might add some clarification. I think his right hand might be backwards... Overall good design and i'm glad to see some traditional media.

Well the idea is that arm are forming from her body weighing her down and more arms are forming on the ground pulling her down into the hole, its not that deep because the process just started(if that makes sense)

ok, here is a first ruff-very ruff sketch. i decided to go with the "our worst nightmares are the ones we lock away inside ourselves/personal demons" theme

I'm honestly considering leaving mine as I have it now. I did deviate a bit from my original plan, I was going to have the well be lined with bricks, but I honestly just don't feel like I could paint all the detail I'd want in those bricks before the end of tomorrow... That and, I'd really like to paint my shoes today.

http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z248/kotsuke723/SCAN0045.jpg

If I do anything else to this, I'll probably just smooth out the ground surrounding the outer stones on the well, make it gradually fade.

RedHotHoshi: Your image does not read spatially; i'm not sure what your trying to depict.
PixieTrick: Removed from the context of this challenge, your image does not seem to relate to the theme.

I see what you mean there. And I know how to fix it... digitally.

http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z248/kotsuke723/fxd.png

I really can't seem to get it right on paper, but just took a few minutes with my broken tablet and Mypaint and managed to get something more believable. It is really annoying to use my tablet though, So I guess I'll start over, this time keeping the more or less fixed window open on my comp so I've got something to reference.

EDIT: Restarted, this one looks much better, IMO.
