Great to see you motivated. I agree with the above users; Definitely start out with a larger brush to block in your main values, then slowly move on to the smaller variations. Keep it going!

I like your compositional viewpoint. There is something compelling about the feel of the work.
What are you using as tools to do your work? Is it digital or classical tools?
and insomnia results freakin marvelous !

Anatomy is coming along nicely. Definitely think you should nail facial anatomy in pencil before doing many digital portraits.

Woo gestures! You're getting the motion down nicely. Are you using Posemaniacs? If so, when you become more comfortable with 60 seconds, bring it down to 45 and then 30. Also, I definitely think you should scan your other stuff.

April 26th, 2010, 01:23 PM
@FourTonMantis: Thank you :D yes im using posemaniacs, i'll definitely do it, i feel like im getting more comfortable with 60 seconds, going down seems like the next step :P I'll scan them once i have time ^ ^

You're gestures are a bit sketchy. You seem to go over a line two or three times before moving on. Try to limit that. Also, you should start with 1-3 really big lines that define the contour of the entire body, then work it down (similar process to your quickies).
Your paintings are really nice though. You have an amazing sense of atmosphere and lighting. The boat in the clouds is probably my favourite.

Cool speedpaintings!
Do figuredrawing from photos instead of posemaniacs (saw that you did some of those), it's better cause posemaniacs are static and lifeless.

First I'd like to compliment your grasp of value. You have an excellent sense of light and dark.
I think the strongest piece is this collection you've showed us is the rocks with bird silhouettes. You do have other great pieces, but between composition, values, and texture, I think it's my favorite.
For a lot of these you seem to be getting ahead of yourself, and starting with too small a brush. And then going over and area again and again. The resulting texture is very distracting and produces a sort of naive feel that I feel detracts from the work. You're obviously very talented, but you're creating so much work for yourself by creating these huge images and working so small!
Perhaps you'd benefit from some studies of environments where you just spend 10 minutes a piece blocking out with a large brush and learning to create your excellent areas of value with a few simple strokes.
I'm sure that if it's a stylistic choice, you'll be able to come back to the small, more scribbley method, but I think you'll benefit from toying with a different method - and learning how to incorporate it to make the image stronger and interesting, instead of confusing and distracting.
Edit: Ahhh and I just saw your last image. This is much closer to what I'd envision you creating. It's still a bit problematic in terms of distraction, but I think it's well on your way to bringing interest with erratic brush movements to an otherwise controlled image.
Carry on!

@emilylorange thank you very much for your comment... i am trying to keep in mind to working with a bigger brush, i dont really know why i always seem to use a smaller one ^ ^ ill try doing those environement studies you suggested :p
once again thank you!
