Ok, i'm trying to get a webcomic started to practice and learn art, both digital and real. Unfortunately I'm an art noob, and I'm running into some problems with my coloring process. if anyone could help me with this problem it'd be awesome.
ok heres the problem:
here we have some line art i did. i scanned it into photoshop 7 and then vectorized it in macromedia flash, then sent it exported it back to ps7.

now when i color it as it is i get a normal job.

but since i do backround and other effects i need to get rid of all negative space. i usually just select the lines with the wand tool and either copy or cut the line art into new psd and start from there. btw i color by selecting each space with the wand and then using the paint pucket to fill in, but i get the same problem with the brushes. once i try to color this i get this weird barrier shown below, even with the backround stuff. the green in in a layer behind it.

this really sucks and if anyone knows how to fix this i'd really appreciate it.
i was somehow able to do this panel by turning off the anti alias function on my wand and cutting it, but as you can see the line art became fragmented and unclean.

i'm using the method at www.machall.com (http://www.machall.com)
shown here:

i have to credit them for getting me into the webcomic stuff. Ian McConville is an amazing artist
if you dont know please try and ask someone who does. this problem really bugs the hell outta me.
Thanks alot.

one simple solution would be to set the lineart layer mode to 'multiply', then create another layer (still keeping the lineart on the top), and put the colors on it :)

Yeah, the suggestion above is a good one. If you do that and still have any trouble with light edges around your linework you might need to take a big brush and fill in by hand the color under the linework layer instead of magic wand select -> dumping it. Or dump it then go back and go around the edges with a little brush on your color layer getting rid of the lighter value. Also, try playing with the tolerence of the magic wand, that might help so it selects less white.

yea that's what i've been doing. i paste the line art on two different layers and set the top to multiply to make the lines darker. thanx for the suggestions though, they help alot.

Ok... as to the multiply solution, sure it works, but if you want any colored lineart you're screwed.

A better solution is this:

copy your black & white lineart
create a new layer & fill it with black
go into quick-mask mode and paste in your lineart
exit quick-mask mode and press delete

You'll be left with pure black lines that are surrounded by transparency. Then you can enable preserve transparency and be able to color ONLY your lineart. Or you can just leave it plain black.

tap 'Q'. pretty easy. i'm in the same boat as you though, trying to get a comic started, but i can't find a style i like, nor can i get anything satisfactory put down on paper or digitally. i should try vectorizing in flash, hadn't thought of that. i look forward to seeing your progress.
