Hi, I'm currently a junior in highschool, and I've started to look around at colleges here in Texas, around San Antonio, because I don't think I can afford to go to any colleges out of state. I was just wondering if any of you guys know about any schools in Texas with a good art program..? I really need to find a few of them so I can start looking for scholarships and all that.
I have no idea where to start looking for all this stuff because my parents never went to a real college so they don't really know how to do all this college stuff...
:help:
Please and thank you!

Unfortunately I am also on the same boat. I've looked around but to no avail. I have also been very reluctant into out of state colleges seeing that the cost for those can increase quite a bit. And not being all that financially stable either I would be a better choice to see if there is one within the state. With that I BUMP!

I am in Austin, Texas and I am a senior in highschool. I have been looking for art colleges, and I'm probally going to end up going to University of North Texas. I heard they have a pretty good art program. Art Institute of Houston if one to look at too. I eventually want to draw for video games, maybe the concept art:) Let me know if you know of any good art colleges in Texas. -Peace

I went to AI Houston. I have a degree in Animation Art & Design. They recently started offering bachelor's in Animation, too. I was pleased with my time there. If you do go there, be sure to take advantage of the internships. My one regret is that I didn't take advantage of that opportunity.

Hi, I grew up in Dallas, went to Arts Magnet downtown. I remember being in the same boat as you all.
Art is a relative term and it depends on what you want to do when you get out of school. If you are looking at any sort of job you might get off this site I would NOT suggest a Fine Arts degree in studio arts. You also have to be careful with commercial art because thats mainly advertising.
In saying that what happened to those art college fairs? I know Arts Magnet had one every Novemeber, open to ANY high school student. Many art colleges show up, you bring your own portfolio and they will help you figure out what you should do based on your interests.
I would suggest calling your local Art institue and find out when these fairs take place.
I myself chose to go to school out of state. It was expensive, I was very poor, but now I have a job I love. In 5 more months my college loan will be paid off (after 6 years)and I have to say it was all worth it. Its an investment, don't let your financial situation hold you back. I can only suggest take your basics at a community college and save your higher tuition money for your junior/senior year art classes.

Good Job Fisa, which out of state college did you attend, im interested in concept art for video games, maybe movies too.
Also, maybe designing creatures for movies...do you know a college that would meet my interests?

I went to Art Center, I don't know if I recommend it though unless you were really interested in an Industrial Design degree to boot. Its an expensive school.
Ringling seems like an interesting school, Gnomon is geared towards exactly what you want to do. It's important to get some sort of background in 3d programs, it gives an edge on those who simply know 2d and gives the company something to do with you once the concept part is over (unless thats all you want to do).
Another thing with going to schools in these areas is that you get contacts, which are worth the move in itself.

Hey Chezlin!
Does it really matter where in texas you want to study? At this point in time I am attending a game design program at the Guildhall at SMU. It is located in Plano, Texas (15 minutes north of Dallas). This is a specialty program and I am loving every bit of it. My professors are wonderful and they all have experience in the industry.
I started in January, but already have my AFA specializing in art. I suggest that you take some art classes at the local community college to help build your portfolio first.
Below is a link to the schools website:

Hey,
I'm in LA at the Art Institute but if I had another option I would be in Texas. There's an Art Institute in Houston which has an animation program. I haven't been there, but by best friends' brother is going there and he is turning out some serious stuff. I suggest that and I would go to ArtInstitutes.edu It has the list of all degree progams and all the schools. The one in LA is awesome and I can only assume the same for Houston.

im a student at ringling shool of art and design who grew up in Plano, Texas... there are few schools in Texas that are ranked very well, but that doesnt mean that they are bad schools. It all depends on which discipline of art you plan on going into. I went through the exact same thing you did too. I found Ringling fit me and my interest... good luck! :D
