Unless you live under a bridge, you are probably aware that Adobe has been working on an update to its Creative Suite products. In fact, Adobe last week pre-announced Creative Suite CS5, which will be previewed on April 12th. (http://cs5launch.adobe.com/)

I am involved with the Photoshop Prerelease Program and now have the OK to show what I've been up to. I can't provide specific details of CS5 features, but needless to say, I've been painting with it. I will be posting my recent work here in the coming weeks. I am also in the initial stages of authoring a Photoshop CS5 title with lynda.com (http://www.lynda.com/home/ViewCourses.aspx?lpk1=78) that will specifically cover painting.

Stay tuned for more paintings!

The brush tech looks very impressive for Photoshop, so Corel Painter no more? Maybe in the future we'll even be seeing impasto brushes in Ps and watercolor brushes.

.... digital post impressionism..... now that is 21st century artistic irony. not enough hookers though.

It looks interesting, but i know it's going to be toooooooo slow(i can feel it in my bones) and then we are going to say, "eh let's get back to previous version"

Looks exciting.

Looks good. I also wonder how fast it will work. Brush stroke lag is even bigger drawback than having small tablet.

I've put together a quick video demonstrating the key steps of interpreting a photograph into a finished painting using Adobe® Photoshop® CS5. My goal here is to take Photoshop beyond simple so-called smudge painting and utilize it as a full-blown painting medium. The photograph is simply an guide underpainting upon which I apply my own expressive embellishments.

there is a sophisticated term for that technique. it's known as tracing. :geekg:

Excellent, looks very convincing as a oil painting.

When I can choose to paint from scratch, utilize digital photography, or employ both in my work...why limit myself? We live in an era of tectonic shifts and new media—I'm taking advantage of whatever appeals to my sensibility.

Today's Photoshop CS5 Painting Sneak Peek focuses on layered imagery. I created this image a few weeks ago during Photoshop's 20th anniversary week.

I've put together a quick video that simultaneously demonstrates Photoshop CS5's painting capabilities as both a "from scratch" tool and photo interpretation tool. Which one is faster? Watch to find out!

Some folks have reported the video will not play (it is Quicktime .mov format). You can also see the movie on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gf0DspBBsmI).

it's very hard to tell what's going on without seeing how often you switch tools and change tool settings,
right now looks like painter's oil pastel brushes with some real bristle, both mixed with photoshop specific set of paper textures.
looks nice, but not something omg amazing

Well i like how brushes react on surface, definitely closer to painter, i like that very much. Also color blending looks mighty, i think we all waited that for a long time.
My only concern, and i said this 1000 times, how much it's gonna lag, and on what size will be unbearable :)

I agree but when I opened the video file I expected to some new improvements connected with painting rather than new photo blending tools. For presentation purposes it didn't give me much information.
The new one with the apple was interesting to look at though. Thanks.

Today's Photoshop CS5 sneak peek image serves two purposes. It highlights Photoshop CS5's painting capabilities, and it additionally advertises Russell Brown's 2-day Virtual Photoshop Worlds workshop (http://www.russellbrown.com/how2010/) at the HOW Design Conference this June 6th & 7th in Denver, Colorado. This workshop will concentrate on CS5's painting capabilities using avatar masks as the theme. I will be joining Russell for this inspiring and educational event. Perhaps we'll see some of you there!

Really like the acrylic paint texture on the background, looks very convincing, I noticed all the bristle marks, hope it's easy to get around the new brush tech.

Thanxs for showing us this, the first one feels so bad like artrage, but the next ones you show looks impressive, do you think the engine works the same as painter> or feels like artrage and those softwares that the blend looks unnatural and like impasto on it.
