View Full Version : Bretton's sketchbook *the update you didn't know you were supposed to be waiting for*
Bretton
February 16th, 2004, 09:22 AM
Im starting this sketchbook to motivate myself to draw everyday and to get some good feedback from the great artists here so that i may improve.
My name is Bretton. Im gonna start by everyday drawing a character out of mother goose nursery rhymes because yesterday i found my mother goose book..
today it is humpty dumpty:
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall
All the kings horses and all the kings men
Couldnt put Mr.Dumpty together again
http://img6.photobucket.com/albums/v16/bretton/humptydumpty.jpg
this is my first today.. maybe my last... depends on if i want to spend hours trying to get a decent egg shape again :]

edit: if you reply (which ya should) dont forget that I am lookin for critiques.

still waiting for comment/criticism/feedback please

the moon man inquiring the way to Norwich. I like the looks of this moon man a bit better... the better version is in my biology notes scribbled in ballpoint... drawing is a bit akward with my mouse
any comments at all?

all the king men couldn't put humpty together again...
and i didnt draw them very well either..
im a little dissapointed in these to tell the truth.. they feel a bit unoriginal and uninspired to me... i couldn't do anything with a knights lower half that looked decent. I'm getting tired of drawing with my mouse. I might redo the knights another day..
if you are wondering about my plans for all the concepts i will do i have decided that i will most likely bring them all into some kind of nursery rhyme composition with mother goose as the focal point.. im thinking maybe mixed media.. ink.. watercolors... colored pencils? any tips on working with these medias together?
feedback anyone?

these don't have anything to do with mother goose but i just thought i'd show some stuff i've done in the past because this seems like the place to do it...
not really anything finished... i don't have a scanner and i can't stand doing anything more than a sketch on my mouse.

Hey Bretton,
I really like your stuff. You've got this creepy stylistic thing going on with your characters - that's good. They stand out from the run o' the mill stuff. The enlongated limbs and insect heads, Mr. Moon, et all. They have a whimsical fairytail essence about them that reminds me of those reall wild children's books I still remember as an adult. Very surreal and dark, and very good.
thanks,
~Oregano.

wow thanks a lot guys :D 100 something views and no replies at all and then two in one day? That makes me real happy.
spellshaper: thanks for the comment. I like the self portrait too.. probably the only thing int his thread that I consider finished.
Oregano: thanks for the comment! I'm glad you like my style.. I appreciate style over quality... so knowing that I have a good style makes me feel good. Your welcome for whatever you are thanking me for :]

Heya Bretton, I'm thanking you for doing some cool works, guy. And style, done well, *is* quality. You don't have style unless it's quality work.
So there ya go.

oregano: well in that case your very welcome :). I'm glad you think my works are cool. You have a point with the style/quality thing.
http://img6.photobucket.com/albums/v16/bretton/threeblindmice.jpg
"Three blind mice,
Three blind mice
See how they run,
See how they run!
They all ran after
The farmer's wife
She cut off their tails
With a carving knife
Did you ever see
Such a sight in your life
As three blind mice?"
i dont remember the nursery rhyme being so violent.. but.. oh well. It's not as bad as finding out that "ashes to ashes we all fall down" was a song children sang when they had the bubonic plague.. thats just depressing.
i used some reference.. mostly for the first one...
edit: i just noticed it isnt really too apparent that they don't have eyes.. that is how i decided to (for the most part) depict them as blind... im not really sure what an eye socket looks like when the eye is missing.. so if anyone would like to give me some comments on that or perhaps a paintover (no photographs please o.o;;) that'd be real nice of you and i'd appreciate it

Hi Bretton, good to see you got a sketchbook here. I'll check in regularly, good show. As for the thunderdome image, i thought that concentrating on lineart would be good for pushing the understanding of form and line. I think i learned quite a deal from my entry.
Something i noticed, i think you're really good at drawing faces. I'd like to see you do some portraits in the future.
Btw, are you up for oc tomorrow? If so, just send me a pm when you're on, and then we can jam again :D

You have well defined aesthetics on your work and that is good. Many of them are more than worth walking that extra mile on them so that they will look more ... tight. Good job. Keep at it :). ( Just my opinion: Lined paper does not help a bit).

Ah! Sorry, been busy with school and stuff... and other excuses... to make up for it here is a smalldump of good (in my opinion) things I have done recently:
This weeks C.O.W (the others aren't that good.. you can go to the C.O.W. threads of you really want to see something mediocre)

my thunderdome 8 entry: Beetlejuice
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v16/bretton/beetlejuice666.jpg
on second thought I'll post this C.O.W. as well, it is not that good but I like it still.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v16/bretton/donttouchthat.jpg
this self-portrait isn't great but it is sentimental as it is the first semi-decent one to come from a mirror
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v16/bretton/selfport003.jpg
There will be a larger dump when the school year is over and I bring all my stuff home (I think maybe a 20 picture dump? assuming I feel all of them are worth showing... probably around 15 pictures....)
edit: also i remembered i am doing a short comic for my own amusement and experience right now, im thinking it will be around 15 pages? I have them all planned out but I havent really counted so 15 pages is a guess from how holding the little notepad of scribble feels. I'm not sure when or if it will be done but if/when it is it will be posted here.
replies!
dadamafia: thanks a lot for the encouragement, i will try.
cburt: Im sorry for the wait, i didn't know anyone still followed my thread, so I let it die, but it's back, thanks for posting.

I love your style and the way you handle mark making. Your self portraits stand out to me. They show more of your personality and the contrast you use is right on more please!

I love all of them they all have this weird quirky ness to them. Your self portrait looked so much like the picture you took it from and some of the characters reminded me of the mad hatter from American mcgees alice. But my favorite would be the bretton of hearts. ^_^ looks great I'd love to see more!

heya bretton, followed your sketchbook link here from another post :)
i like quite a few aspects of what you have here, seeing the progression from your earlier work to the later is pretty cool too, watching your style develope.
the expressions on your characters are great, thier very quirky so i really dig them alot. :)
on the crit side~ would love to see you do some live figure drawings of people and creatures, you might find it helps with body proportions and possitions, sometimes notice you seem to be a little off what your aiming for :). im sure with what youve shown us you could translate any new learnings into your work while keeping the nice style you have.
keep up the good work :D
