This is the main character for a 3rd person stealth action game that was canceled last year. He is an ex-marine, ex-gymnast turned master thief. His stealth suit has many special abilities such as super strength, speed, silent mode and body heat masking. The idea was that when these different abilities were activated the nodes on his suit would light up leaving motion blur trails as they move.

It was a challenge to come up with a design that stood apart from similar characters in other games. In order to play up the thief angle I gave him the cap, which helped the design a lot. The lead designer was really into having bear arms, which in the end I think helped as well.

If you’re interested I have some other development concepts and images of my in game character model on my website.

these are some variations I did on three slightly different base faces - one is more friendly another more sneaky and last more heroic

an early character concept that ended up looking to sci-fi for the rest of the game

The sci-fiish design loooks real sleek. The other stuff is good aswell.

Only one thing that bothers me, in the first pic the green light on his right arm (from our view) looks real good while the green light on his left arm looks a bit dull. I think that adding in some darker values like on the other arm would help.

Nice looking designs.... but why does a stealth suit have big emergebcy orange lights across it?

Thanks

The lights served a couple purposes: give the player feedback that a suit ability was active, help make the character visible in the shadows, and just be cool eye candy. The style of the game wasn't super realistic.

Wow, nice work! I think the lights are fine, but there's a bit too much. Look at Sam Fisher from Splinter Cell. He has those glowing green lights on his night vison goggles and a small light on his back. Of course realistically you wouldn't have any lights, but this is for the game.

Have you tried using camo paint on his skin? That might add something.

Keep it up :)
