ROUND #194 :: Robin Hood
DESCRIPTION
Robin Hood
As most of you will probably be well aware who Robin Hood is, I won’t give a long description of him. There are a few important aspects of him that will need to be included in your entries though: he’s an outlaw living in the woods, he’s an excellent marksman with the bow and a great swordsman, he steals from the rich to give to the poor and he is assisted by a group of people known as the ‘merry men’ (however, drawing them or any of the other characters that are not Robin Hood is optional!).
For a little more information you can always look up the numerous books, movies and ballads that have been devoted to this fictional/historical character, or you can of course revert to y’olde wikipedia:
Robin Hood – Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robin_Hood)
Note that the character of Robin Hood -as well as the characters surrounding him- have changed many times throughout history (even as far back as the 14th and 15th century there are controversies). It’s up to you what version you’re running with for your entry this round.

Thanks to Yoitisi for the topic this week!

Few archery poses to look at and help avoid kurt russel look-a-likes :). Lol at the handstand girl! :)
p.s its ok to post preview images from stock photo sites yea?
p.p.s like obacmar said, is it ok to do a modernized version of robin hood, aslong as it stays true to the scource of the character?

1st sketch, and im quite liking it :). The idea here is the bow sort of converts into a shield. Think percy jackson crossed with the stargate armours. And as you can see it holds his sword aswell. So Mr.Hood can go from close range to longe range combat in an instant.
Want to take it in more of a steampunk direction rather than the historical/traditional look. And put in a few features from modern day bows. Anyway before I get to the nitty gritty, would like a little feedback from some of you guys, see if you can spot anything that could give me trouble later on. I think the one arm looks oversized compared to the other, and maybe I need to widen the chest a little?

This one is gonna be sweet, Can't wait to see what comes out of a subjest thats been done 1000 times.

I am wondering how much liberty do we have with the character since he is made up of legends and ballads that have changed through the years and are based on theory and imagination. What are the key element to keep and what can be fantasized? Please let me know asap!!!!
Thanks

Crap... probably won't have time to do this CHOW. Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with!
Danbot386 - I think his right hand needs to be more in the center of the bow. Of course, if you draw the lower half of the bow, (which might be an easier fix), his hand would be in the center. Otherwise as it is right now, if he shot the bow it would be unbalanced and the sword would probably go right into his gut! Ouch! :)
Danbot386
March 22nd, 2010, 07:48 PM
@Kat444 - yea, I think the arm needs raising a little and the angle (and maybe size) of the bow changed slightly, because it would be aiming downwards as it is. And you cant really see on the sketch, but the sword is suppossed to be behind the arm. So hes safe from self harm aslong as he is carefull :).

Well I have decided, as long as it fits into the scope (and I believe it does) that I am making Robyn Hood a woman, actually Maid Marian. Her story:
Young Marion, growing up as the Daughter of a lord and mother of a duchess, was exposed to the wonderful glories of a noble life, but her young rambunctious way lead her to sneaking into the city at night. Dressing as a boy to blend in unnoticed she was able to move about the city in such a way to not only observe it but to live it as well. Being a bit of a trouble maker mixed with the stern manner in which she was forced to behave at home, petty thievery and mischief became a nightly game. She had become rather good at it over the years until one night she happened upon the wrong mark. The Sheriff himself she had tried to burgle and almost found herself being exposed as her true self. But, by luck a young farm boy named Little John (not due to size but merely due to the fact that he was John the 3rd) was passing through heard the scuffle and ran to intervene. Throwing the sack of grain he had just purchased for his father at the Sheriff, Marian was able to escape and avoid being found out. John offered her a place to hide in his fathers barn until the Sheriff and his men had almost forgotten about the ordeal.
During Marian's stay with John and his family, she saw first hand the harsher side of life and the struggles his family endured due to the high taxes the lords set on the land and vowed to do all she could to put and end to the people suffering. After she returned home, to a much sever punishment, she became very aware that reasoning with her father and the other nobles was useless, for they would not easily lose a little to better greatly those that needed it most.
On her 17th birthday, she returned to Little John with a devious yet thought full plan to steal from the rich to give to the poor. Knowing much about the comings and goings of the Nobles and, when and where trade deals would take place made it very easy to convince friends of John's to join in there Merry band.
To this day only John and the Merry Men know of Marian's true identity. It was easy enough to spread the rumor of "He" around the nobles to throw them off their guard. For whom would expect the daughter of lord to deceive them in such a malice manner.
** Sorry for the long set up ;), just wanted to make it believable.**

Danbot386: That pose would be very difficult to achieve in real life, especially for arching. Cool design though.
DIMAGYAN: Looks great so far, can't wait to see what you do with it. My only question would be why he has both his bow and blade out at the same time.
darklogic: the way the right leg buckles under her is very awkward. also you may be able to achieve a more dynamic pose if you have the right arm coming forward with some foreshortening.

Salem Much prefer the 2nd design. Its looking like a darker version of robin hood, would like to see where you take this one.
Revolution77 Nice start. The face has a lot of personality, looks ecentric, suave and like he has a sharp wit. Good stuff
DIMAGYAN Cant really fault it so far. Maybe one arm is slightly longer than the other, cant really tell. The only real problem Ive got is that he looks exactly how a robin hood should look, almost too traditional if you get what I mean.
DarkLogic Like Liffey said, the legs need fixing a bit. And maybe the arms aswell. Definately follow jessibeans advice from the last chow. I know you can colour really well from the last chow, so if you get the pose right it could be kick-ass good! :)
Matt B The leg up on the rock looks too long. Apart from that I like the pose and the face looks good aswell. Reminds me of a character from bleach, cant remember his name, but if you know bleach you will know who Im on about.
6 Sided The hood looks a little too bulky around the shoulders. And remember the 3/4 rule, you might be ok but just do a bit more of the legs to be safe. Also I would give him a bigger bow, he looks like a big chap that could handle it :). But thats just a personal opinion. Nice start.
Suneater Nice idea :). The merry men as backing dancers maybe?

Question:
I'm kinda confused with the submission rules, so it would be nice to make it (even more) clear how far can we push the original character.
To be more specific: Is it a must to place the character in the middle age or is it possible to create for example a futuristic interpretation?
The brief says he lives in the woods: Does it mean that I can't go for an urban interpretation? How much freedom do we have about the 'woods' part?
Imho Robin Hood has already been rendered too many times in the very same way. It would be nice to know wheter we can play around with the character a little bit (keeping its essence) or not.

Novbert: I didn't intend for this topic to be too constraint, and as you can read in the wiki article the actual tale of Robin has changed many times in the past. Somewhere earlier in the thread I saw someone going for a female version of the Robin Hood character, which is fine by me as long as it still reads as the character of the tales. Setting Robin Hood in another age is totally fine too.
You can also interpret 'woods' any way you want I guess, but just be aware that the character you are designing still reads as the Robin Hood character from the tales, and not just be a random dude with a bow or a common thief.

Hey :)
The concept is a merge between Mad Max and Robin Hood. Immediately after I read the topic my minds eye focused on this character. Mad Max was kinda "Robinhood-esque" he fought for the justice, and stole gas and water from the bad guys.
Also, I just wanted to draw a badass girl on a car.
I think the X bow will be a shotgun combo deal.
Pls crit.. I tend to loose my image after this stage.

Wooo... Alright, a little nervous here. I lurk a lot, but don't usually work up the nerve to post, let alone participate in a weekly, but I've got some free time and figured I'd try my hand :bashful:
Basically, instead of being a regular ol' thief who's just uncommonly good with mundane weapons, this guy is an arcane archer who uses implements to focus energy into arrows and a sword. Hence the glowy.
He's also supposed to be more... mysterious, and a little darker, I suppose. Less about the showmanship, more about the stealing.
I'm toying around with the idea of giving him a quiver from which he draws arcane energy for the arrows, but I think it might just make more sense for the bow to focus both a "string" and arrows, like the sword hilt would focus an arcane blade.

Liffey:Thanks! That's a very good question. My first idea was that he is holding the bow and have the sword out because just hear somenthing in the direction he is looking. But i guess it really doesn't show on the sketch.Probably i will erase the sword so he is just standing on the camping.Good observation!
Danbot386:Thanks!, i will look that arm.I know what you mean about the look of the character.Generally speaking i like to retain an "historical" feel when doing characters that are set in a specified time period and changed mainly the charcter feel(no hat, not polished beard, etc), but yeah is not too original :)
darklogik:I really like your idea for the character and pose.Quite narrative.im not really fluent with english so i made a couple of sketches to show you a bit of ideas for your character's pose.I tryied to mantein your idea and drawing as much as posible and just add more movement in certain parts.
Generally speaking i worked the sketches as an action pose,so doesn't look too stealth as perhaps you originally planned.I also made a quick "sketchover" (sorry about that, i don't like to draw onto another persons drawing but it was more easy to show).I basicly make changes as i practiced before in the sketches.
In any case i hope you don't take this in a bad way. These are just suggestions.
Looking forward for your finished piece.

I like your second version, it really show the story and plus you have the oportunity to show her design. There is some problems with the horse, specially the legs(too thick and the articulations are not quite right) also you could put her(R.Hood) feets on different levels of the terrain(perhaps a tree root for instance).Good work.
JessiBean:great work on the clothes, i really like your design. He is going for an ambush? great linework.
Jager: Very nice sketch. You go for a young Robin?Nice style.

DIMAGYAN: First, thanks again! I do also like your number 2 with the more action. No worries about poses, inspiration inspires inspiration, thats why a group of artists is always stronger than the solo artist!
As for mine, The horse is a little off, but keep in mind Im going Clydesdale for the area of england that this takes place, so some of it is hair and their muscle structure, if that help the view point. If not than Im just off ;). Love to see where your is going, it has good movement and flow.
Lots of other good stuff and unique styles. I'll crit more when Im not supposed to be asleep for work the next day. And Jess, yours is kicking ass so far, really want to see your color pallet for this one.

Just posting some thumbs of ideas that I had. I'm trying really hard to come up with a unique portrayal of Mr. Hode. What dawned on me is that even though the whole central mythos of RH is his charity, very seldom is he seen portrayed as helping the poor, usually he's just some variant of a dashing rogue. So the latter sketches are the direction I think I'm going to go in, portraying him as a Jesus-like figure. Also the sheer ridiculousness of his story (staying uncaught and all that) always irked me, especially knowing how Nezumi Kozo ended up...

This is the composition I'm going for. A very young Robin Hood (~16 yrs) is seen giving a wretched peasant some loot, as a beatific Friar Tuck looks on in admiration.

Second wip.
If anyone has a moment to look at it... Which position do you think works better? I think i like more A one, becouse it seems to be more spatial... But i would love to hear your opinions...

Ros1: A looks better to me as well! The extra branch also adds nicely to the composition I think. But I'd do something about his left leg/foot posture, it does look a little 'funny'
Really digging the colors and lighting!

Time to join :)
Some crits first
Danbot386: No offense, man, but as someone already mentioned: That pose is totally unrealistic. I'd highly recommend that you should change it. No, first try to stand in that pose for just ten seconds, and then change it. Putting the left knee on the ground can be enough. And put the lower half of the bow in front of the foot imho. People usually don't hold the bow behind their back.
Saleem: That first sketch rocks. I love the loosy style. Tons of personality there. I love how you rendered him in a kinda unusual way.
Revolution77:Nice start. I like the face. The color scheme is a bit boring and the main light source needs more definition but it's a strong start.
DIMAGYAN:Both first and second one looks solid. Somehow I like the first one a bit more - maybe it's just the face. On a second thought the storytelling in the second version isn't clear for me. He's dealing with something that's outside the picture which is kinda disturbing. And using three arrows is definitely an overkill.
darklogik: The second one is definitely better, nice storytelling idea. Only crit: The pose could be a bit more intense. It neither seems that she does everything to hide (the side of the bow is visible from the road) nor that she's about to attack those people (the pose of the legs is a bit too... static, maybe if you'd place them a little more apart)
Matt_B: That left leg definitely needs some rework the thigh is too long, the lower leg is too short. Holding the bow that way looks a bit unnatural for me too.
6 Sided: The character really suffers from some proportional issues, but also don't forget: you don't have a chance to get on poll if you don't show at least 3/4 of the character.
Suneater: Nice rendering, I love the large feather and the rendering so far, but big WARNING: Legs too short!! The distance between his crotch and the top of his head shouldn't be smaller then the distance between the crotch and the feet.
Feil Magnus: The pose looks weird and it's also unclear what he's doing. I'd do another sketch of the pose just to test other options.
zoukka: Nice exaggerated pose. Not that typical Robin Hood for sure. No real crit yet (just make sure that bow won't remain straight)
Obacmar: Interesting idea. I'd say there's nothing wrong with it so far. Maybe the character is too large in relation to the car. I'd suggest you should try to resize it to see how it looks.
shuzuko: Arrows of energy? sounds interesting. But the design and the pose is a bit boring so far. I'd certainly push it (also the colors) a bit more to make the idea clear.
ChaoticKnight: Now that's one hell of a start, man! I love the whole look of it. The only thing that's bugging me is the hair. It suggest that he flies in upward and left, though the pose suggest that he falls downward and right. Other than that it looks really great.
Paolo13:lovely cartoony character. Can't wait to see it finished. But: on those shaded wersions the stomach area looks really weird on almost every three of them. I'd say define the main light source first and save the fancy colored light sources for the finishing stages. That blue light is just not working.
JessiBean: Nice start as always. Will be interesting to see you drawing a male character :P
Angel Intheuk: simple, but not bad. I like the face. If you also do, make sure that you don't put too much more detail in there.
Heliux: Interesting face. Would be good to see what he's doing with his hand and why he holds his legs this way. The pose seems a bit weird at this stage
Jager:Woot, cool :) one of my favourites so far. Can't wait to see it finished.
Ros1: I love the mood. nothing to crit here so far. Keep it up, man!
dwinbotp:It's too hard to crit at this stage so I won't. Update, please ;)
Carnifex: Somehow he looks like a painter in front of a canvas. He even have a brush (the arrow) and a palette (the bag). I'd say get some ref on lightin conditions in woods. That yellow light looks unnatural.
Sharkcellar:Great thumbs, man. I like the second one in the first row, and the second in the second row. The Jesus idea sounds interesting - though those thumbnails are very hard to read. About your chosen composition: no offense but it looks a bit boring. maybe choosing the perspective a little bit (pushing it closer to the peasant's point of view, showing how he sees Robin) would be a good twist.
Well, that's all, folks. Here are my thumbs. Choose a number! Any number! ;)

Ros1,
I like "B" better. In "A" that character looks like he would be a dwarf if he stretched his legs out.
Novbert,
Thanks for the crit. That's a really good idea! The layout just came to me today, but I can definitely change the composition to be stronger. Thanks.

Ros1 - I think I would like A more if you lengthen his legs, otherwise it is B for me.
Novbert - I am leaning towards #2. I like the idea of the small crossbows. Looking forward to seeing which one you choose.
All I have time for at the moment! Looking good everyone!

March 24th, 2010, 06:55 PM
Ros1 Very strong pic ! B looks better to me, his pose there is almost like a panther leaning in ready to jump his pray. That tension is gone in A if u ask me. Also anatomy of the stretched out leg in A isn’t really working. Its too short compared to the other leg.
darklogik
March 24th, 2010, 07:43 PM
Ros1: I agree with Jager, I think B is more dramatic, maybe just a bit more center balance on the body but, in my opinion its a stronger piece.
Novbert: Thanks, I am planning on adjusting the legs a bit and making her a little more dynamic(if I can). As for yours I like 5 and 8, as I feel them to be more dynamic. Cheers!

Ros1 I like B more. A's a little more dynamic, but feels a tad off-AMAZING color use though! :D
Novbert I think 8 stuck me as standing out the most- but it does remind me of Prince of Thieves. 2 is also interesting.
Sharcellar I'm curious to see what you'll do with the background. I like the character being engaged in dialogue-makes it more cinematic.
darklogik I'd agree with Novbert on the first one, but she is leaning up against a tree (I'd imagine being a skinny as possible) -but a dynamic pose wouldn't hurt.
for whatever this is worth! :blahblah:
http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/1594/fordark.jpg
I remember coming across a tutorial on soft and hard edges on the different areas of light and focus-in the reference and tips forum SOMEWHERE. ;\ -other than that I'd recommend checking out some impressionist color styles. They work from the back to the front putting wet on wet medium. All about speed. -Or you could google David Levey -I think he's got some tutorials and brushes up on Imagine FX. Really depends on the speciffic "look" you mean. Happy hunting.

I LOVE your characters - but i'm surprised that your robin is bigger (in stature) than little john - i mean, he's not as tall but he looks much stronger. isn't little john meant to be the strong one?
I love the style though very european, just like what I see when I go to the con's in france.

darklogik - i like the pose and story of this image - but my only crit as it stands is to get some ref of horses, cos at the moment the horse looks like a wooden one. I know horses are difficult (i paint horse portraits regularly for people), but I think it would add that little extra if you used some ref for it, even if it is going to be sketchy in the background?
Other than that, love the pose.

Hey, awesome topic! Too bad I don't have time this week, there's a 15 page translation that has to be done :(
Anyways, I just had to comment on a few:
Revolution77 - that's an awesome facial expression you have! Just watch the balance, he's leaning to the left a bit (our left), probably because the sword is not in the middle. Great work regardless :)
DIMAGYAN - I love yours, I like the pose on the newest sketch but I like him better with a beard like on the first sketch. Anyways, how ever you decide to do him in the end it looks like it'll rock :D
Jager - loving it! :D
Paolo13 - Oooh nice! I'm just a bit confused on where the blue light is coming from since you have very little blue in your bg but your line work is great.

Thanks Jessibean - I love yours too - love the lighting,a lthough i preferred the more serious facial expression to the benign one you've got at the moment. I rather liked the seriousness of the first sketch. I love the depth too.
The horse's head is too big or the bloke? I took the photo of the rider with a wide angle lens, so it has that slightly forced perspective look to it (i quite like that) but for sure, the head of the dude i'd scribbled in the last one was too big, bizarrely, the horses wasn't - compared with the photo anyway.
However, here it is so far - new head on robin, thanks to my fella!

Hi,
I think her right knee looks to well lit compared to the rest of that side of her body. Also it looks like the arrow has 2 sets of fletchings and her fingers should be on the string not the shaft of the arrow. It would also be more common to use three fingers (with the index above the fletchings and the next two below).

MadGorilla: Looks great! COming along well. Just wanted to note you should check your angles on the bow before you go to far. The areas around the grip of the bow seem to be going straight down, but the depth of the bow and angle of it the points on the grip may need to be coming more forward.
Back to work, catch you all later.

Great stuff guys! I went with the 'normal' Robin Hood running away from the rich people's army! Those bastards! just giving it a twist of my own design here and there. This is about 10 hrs of work, I was going to leave in just black and white, but I thought I'd color it too. So I'll post the colors soon. Cheers!

Hey guys, just a very broad critique that applies to a few of the entries;
The "proper" way to draw a bow (draw as in knocking and bringing the arrow back) has the arrow against the side of the bow opposite the arm drawing it. Many of the medieval paintings were incorrect, with the arrow and draw hand on the same side. There are a few different ways to draw a bow, but this is likely the way robin would have done it.
Just thought I'd letcha know :)

DIMAGYAN: I can see that you are very well skilled with the traditional media, hope your transition to digital goes fast and smooth...I am struggling a lot!!!!!! (I am a big fan of south American comic artist!!!! Breccia rules!!!!)
Thanks.Actually is digital. It's just the pencil brush with paper texture in SAI.
And yes, A.Breccia works are amazing! I also lilke many of the works from Solano Lopez, Domingo Mandrafina,Altuna.I haven't read too many italian comics, but a couple of creators i like are H.Pratt, S.Toppi and G.Crepax
Nice style on your Robin and supportive characters.I really like the drawings and the inking.I think a more simple colouring, would benefit your image. But this is just my taste i guess.Good work, looking forward for your entry

Dimagyan: Yes I realized you are using digital. U named many grate artists!!! I feel like an era is ending!!! The monsters of comics are fading away, giving space to the new digital kids!!!
Yes, I opted for a simple coloring, but I do not know if I will be able do color them all, I hope.
This is my Robin.
By the way, today I had no spare tips for my wacom pen, so I found on the internet that U can replace it by using a toothpick, and it works perfectly!!! The actual feeling of the wood on the tablet is quite nice.

Still on the the RB/Mad Max cross, and I love the car. Changed to night scene, it will be lit by the cars chasing them. Trying to keep it simple.

Hey hey hey!
I've been following for a while and now I'll try to jump into this CHOW. Lots of super nice images so far, hope to see them all being completed :)
Here is the first WIP sketch of my version of Robin Hood. My goal is to make him less nimble and fit and more grizzled and fearsome instead. Tomorrow I will clean up the linework and start blocking him out.

drobyazko - something seems off about your proportions - the head looks large, and the hands and feet look small. The legs may be a little short, too? Do you have a reference you are working from? If not, get someone to pose for you like that, it will help work out proportions. And see if you can work in some dynamic folds on the fabric to show how he is stretching his arm up and back, etc.
Daxtor - maybe it's just me, but I don't see any image in your post.
deftonys - I like your line quality (almost seems old-school Burton-esque) His hands look really small to me, and he seems to be stretched out length-wise.
Obacmar - this new pose is nice and dynamic, but I think you may be pretty far off the brief with this one - I don't see anything on this to tell me you're reinterpreting Robin Hood. It's a girl with a gun jumping off a car. Maybe reel it back in some.
Paolo 13 - I really, really love the style on this, and the attitude. I don't think I have anything to add, I just really like this.
1chains1 - I like that you're going for something moody (very Batman-esque). The face seems off - I think the eyes may be too far away from the nose and mouth. Also, try flipping your canvas, it looks like everything may be ever-so-subtlely be sliding upwards to the right, and flipping will make this instantly apparent.
Jager - I love it... nothing to add, really, but I think this is an awesome character and a charming drawing.
Kabarsa - Cool piece, but your figure is listing off to the right instead of being centered over his feet. Try flipping your canvas.
Mad Gorilla - nice update, love the feet.
Some progress from me...

drobyazko Nice picture, I agree with JessiBean. Also try to think about the depth in your drawing.
Obacmar Awesome action in your pictures! love the angle
JessiBean Stunning work as always! your Robin looks more like a poet and a dreamer than a outlaw and thief, but that’s absolutely no critique :)
deftonys Very nice picture and beautiful details, I think the angle of legs and feet are a bit awkward,
The sense of weight is not totally there.
I could not resist playing with the liquefy tool in ps to try suggest some
adjustments.
Hope you don’t mind and it might be of some help.
also u might want to have some contrapposto in your poses

Couple reviews.
ArtByManon:: Stunning work! your horse is amazing, so much so, you re-inspired me to redo my horse. can not wait.
MadGorilla:Other than what I mentioned earlier, I love it. Great style and very masculine. keep it up. :lounge:
Dave_Lynch:Very cool style.. Hope you finish!
1chains1:Very cool! Love the batman darkness. I think it seems more assassin than Hood, but that just me. good work.
Revolution77:Very cool, The more down and out days twards the end it seems. Maybe accent the bad eye more if he is not just winking? Good job!
H4WK: I love your sketch and the dramatic lighting. Hope to see the progress!
Feil Magnus:Nice perspective, very unique! Other than the hand seems a bit to close / big, I think it rocks.
Suneater: Really cool! I love the colors and the lighting. He seems to be bowing out after some destruction. Nice!
Heliux: Very nice positioning and layout, looks cool. Good work!
metaphysiks: Awesome Style! Very "Grape Ape" looking. Super fun.
gloombunny: I really like it. Very dark. You seem to be improving from your last piece. I think a little more stark lighting would help pop him out a bit. Nice Work.
Paolo13:SOme of your coolest character work I've seen. I would LOVE to see you do a novel or comic in this style, I would soooo buy it! GREAT WORK!
JessiBean: Amazing work again! as usual. I actually love the fact that he looks more serene, I think it helps solidify and justify the Devious acts he does on others behalf. Love IT!
Sorry for those of you I missed. Been another 20 hour day and I need to get to bed.
Here is my update. Work on some of the loose areas and redid the victims from a better perspective I think. Looking for comments and critiques as I had no reference for Robyn, managed to find a good horse ref. though.

Cool works so far! Haven't been able to work on it until today, though. Here's my WIP, and some comments.
MadGorilla. Love the "macho man" thing, and the light. Be careful with perspective, both in the bow, on the arm holding the string and on the raised leg.
Kabarsa: It looks like you've ended up painting all the silver parts in the same gray, and the same with brown, etc. On the previous wip things, although blurry, looked a lot better, because light and colour works in "patches".
Jager: Cool work. apart from the direction of the leg not matching the log direction, one of the best entries so far.
Paolo13: Absolutely love this entry. I think the arrows are a bit distracting, though.
JessiBean: Astounding image, as always. Be careful with the readability of the character. Maybe you could use that beautiful yellow light in the face, in order to make it stand out more.
Sharkcellar: Cool concept, although I find the monk a bit distracting. He could have some relation with what's happening (even if it was only a look).
Darklogik: Cool composition, At first I was going to do something like that. I think the horizon line for the character perspective is way lower than the one for the right side of the image. Also, Robin's right leg (the one in our left) seems to have a too long thigh.

Redoing to bow area, I got inspired to give a tribute reference to Disney's Robinhood. Although it may not be the coolest version of Robinhood to some of you, it is probably the first time you heard the story and alot of the fame around the story was rejuvenated by Disney's version. So here is my Fox Bow for my Robyn Hood.

Abrodos: Yes, I thought so to, there was a sword to but I took it off, I might reduce the number of arrows, or take them away all together.
Epickey: I am using a regular intuos2 tablet with a common brush, not to soft, in order to keep the flow regular. I work the lines at size 3. It is quite simple and natural for me, I am happy they are getting a good response.
Darklogik: I think is a problem for everyone, I did not use the attachment manager for uploading my last Robin.

Update on my wip. Made some changes on the anatomy although the shoulders still look a little wide, going for lighting anyways. Backlit with the blue ambient fill.
JessiBean I dunno. I repect your opinion but I do think this is a fine interpretation of a female post-apocalyptic robin hood. But I did take your criticisms seriously, and added some green, a feather, and more Gothic type leather garb. Thx

My contribution :
Cam Sykes
March 28th, 2010, 07:12 AM
Darklogik: I rekon you could fade out the approaching guys on horses a bit, maybe less detail and not so sharp jsut to push them into the background more. And also knocking back the saturation on the foliage and their clothing around them might help too. Because the focal point needs to be very much on the character.
I decided to spend more time on getting the lines right before getting too ambitious and jumping into the rendering. Usually problems jump out at me after I post.
Paolo13
March 28th, 2010, 08:33 AM
Cam Sykes: I do not know how much you are planning to change wen you color, but for now I noticed these flows:
1. The scarf look a bit "solid" and not soft.
2. You could work a bit on how the shirt bends on the arms
3. The back part of the crossbow appears to have a different prospective from the front part.

The dark objects is another archer preparing for the impending ambush. Didn't think it was that hard to tell, I may need to revised it. The tree is based on the Tree in They believe is the actual Sherwood forest area. Unfortunately I think Im out of time to do to many more adjustments but Ill work on the Merry man in the BG.

Really lovely - and the horses look great - really good sense of depth too.
By the way, that photo of the tree in Sherwood is here (i live in Nottingham!), there are lots of legends around, nobody will know for sure even if Robin Hood really existed, but i say there's never a good story without a root somewhere right?
The tree is nearly a thousand years old!

PS, another thing - only a pain in the ass thing too - but the bow that your hood is using, wouldn't be able to bend (I LOVE the design though with the carving in it), its too rigid to flex with the drawing of the bow. (doesn't really matter though since its aesthetically lovely!).

Here is as far as I can take this chow, unless I can conjure up a few spare hours to finish it off. Would very much like it critted to hell (but in a nice way that wouldnt involve tears). Personally, I am happy with the design, sort of what I was aiming for. But I am instantly humbled after looking at what everyone else has created!
Anyway, just a few quick comments on the last page or 2
darklogic You are spongebob darklogic pants! You seem to absorb all crits and suggestions that come youre way and act on them superbly. IMHO each chow you produce is better than the last.
paolo13 Love the character, but there is something about the bow and arrows that is putting me off. Would of loved to of seen the version you was going to create with the merry men :).
suneater Makes me think Robin hood/V for vendetta for some reason. Not a bad thing! I think the only thing you need to work on is getting the folds and flows of the clothing looking right. But like I said with darklogic, this weeks entry is better than last weeks IMHO.
scribblehead The trailing foot looks a little off, could just be me though. Still 100x better than anything I could produce :).
daroz nice pose!
revolution77 Dont know if its just me, but the face seems to have lost that character that I mentioned before. Much more serious looking. Think its the facial hair maybe?
obacmar Have to say that I instantly think "mad maxine chow" and wouldnt guess it had anything to do with robin hood. But on the other hand I have to give a thumbs up for being original and thinking outside the box. And while sometimes you might miss the brief, your ability to do the unexpected should be congratulated.
