++ January Blues ++ update 2_17_04

This is for an assignment where i have to a page of a calender, i got january... this is done in flash b/c illustrator on my comp has been acting up.

Any and all crits and/or comments are welcomed and appreciated :D

Also note the the calvin and hobbs influence which was also part of the assignment. well not calvin and hobbs but picking a illustrator to mimic perse....

The very first thing that got my attention was that the SNOW looks more like bubbles. Too perfectly round and it ruins the illusion of snowing.

The one differnet eye also throws me off. Why is the eye different - does he have a black eye?

I like the style though.

sevans - thanks for your comments. yes he does have a black eye and yes the snow does look like bubbles.... i think i am going to make 3 or 4 different kinds of snow flakes and replace the bubbles, and see how that looks. the only reason i did them that way is b/c that is how snow seems to look in photographs. if you or anyone else has anyway to make the bubbles look more like snow...do share :D and thank you again :)

p.s should i make him have two black eyes? will it be more clear?

Maybe just increase the size (bruising) of the black eye, to make it more obvious.

I know what you mean be snow appearing round in photos, but one trick i have seen in comics and painting is the make the snow OVAL and on a angle. This creates a general direction and feel that snow is falling. Frank Miller has used this well in his black and white SIN CITY comics.

Might save you time over the snowflake idea.

The reason i didn't like the bubbles was because they appeared to perfect. Like the pic FINISH IT.

i have worked on this a bit... the text and numbers need to be original hand comped, after that i can semi alter them. i wanted the numbers to resemble pee :p and January is written in the icicles. i am still working on them. so any crits comments or advice would be appreciated :D
